    Default Let's party like it's 2006!

Brian Westbrook's coming for a visit according to Adam Schefter.

Now we just need to get LaDanian off the Jets, lure Tiki Barber and Rudi Johnson out of retirement, and I think we could be rocking both backfields of the '06 Pro Bowl!

Joking aside, if it's another bargain basement deal, guess it's hard to argue with the move. Unless, of course, you're trying to convince Henry that upper management is making solid long-term moves for the future.

Well, with Portis, Westbrook, LJ and Parker on the roster, you only need a couple good games from each one, and hope McNabb carries the team the rest of the 8 games. Or, 8-12 good quarters from each back.

True but I just don't see it happening. Running back depth traditionally must contribute to Special Teams. None of these guys are that guy. They are all feature backs who are long past working Teams, if they ever worked it at all.

Heh...I guess my attempt at humor fell a little flat.

You are right of course, and they will keep at most 2 of the 4 (if they sign Westbrook), maybe less. And really, unless Parker can return kicks again (I believe he did that in Pittsburgh), I don't really see them keeping more than 1 of the 4.

    Har har har.

This is a move like Galloway, Parker or Johnson. Low risk, low reward. I guess maybe we're throwing spaghetti against the wall?

Well, Shanahan has been consistent since Day One with his "competition" mantra. He reiterated it again at the last minicamp:

On the signings of Chris Draft, Bobby Wade and Joey Galloway:

“We are just trying to get guys in here that compete, guys that have played well through the years. Joey Galloway can still run, he has great speed. I watched him last year in New England ’s camp. Draft obviously, is a linebacker that has played a number of different positions. Wade in Kansas City a year ago got some playing time. We bring these guys in here and have them compete. One of our goals once we do start camp is to have our top 80 guys.”

On adding veterans to the team:

“We get a chance to watch people compete. It is a very competitive business. Like you mentioned, you have some old players with some young players, some experienced veterans. You get a chance to see what they can do, not only in the offseason program, but also once mini-camp comes around you want people out there everyday. Sometimes you will have injuries. You have to go out there and field a team, field a seven-on-seven, a couple of different groups out there. It has been very good.”
Several reasons why--assuming he's not full of **** and plans to keep all the "name" guys just because he likes them (or Snyder commands it--that's for Sarge )--it makes sense ...

    - low risk (contracts) potential high reward (competence)
    - vets to help school the youngsters
    - guys who have been in the new systems
    - guys familiar with the new coaches/players and vice-versa
    - build a list of available/useful options for fallback if/when injuries happen in the season
    - etc.

How about we just say "reward." If Galloway makes the team, stays healthy, and catches 30-40 balls for 400-600 yards and a handful of TDs, is that not a bigger contribution than we've had from WRs over the past several years outside of Moss?

Not crazy about this, just because of his injury history with the concussions. I would have to see multiple doctors clear him enthusiastically before I signed him to any deal.

And Henry, do you really have a direct line with e FO? Pretty cool...

I'm ok with signing the guy on the condition he's A) healthy and B) signed to a bargain basement deal that's based primarily on making the final roster and subsequent performance.

That said, that'll only happen if he doesn't get a shot elsewhere. I'm not certain, all that aside, that he really fits into Shanahan's scheme in the first place however.

I think that's about the very very best we can hope for from Galloway. So yes, that would be a fairly low reward.

I'm not saying low-risk, low-reward is a bad thing. It just is what it is.

I swear I'm not trying to bash every move we make.

Haha, are you naturally a glass half-empty kind of guy? Or have the past 20 years driven you to it?

Rick Maese's opinion is that it was just a matter of convenience:

Brian Westbrook and Bruce Allen were previously skedded to speak to HS students at Springarn High on Wed. That the two would now meet to discuss Westbrook's services sure sounds like matter of convenience to me. Team coulda met with him at any point in past couple months.

    Definately that second thing.

But you know what? I'm sick of being Grouchy Smurf. I'm going to post only happy thoughts for the rest of the offseason. Starting now.
