    Helmet P JOSH BIDWELL

    Height: 6-3 Weight: 220 Age: 34
    Born: 3/13/1976 Roseburg , OR
    College: Oregon
    Experience: 11th season
High School: Douglas HS [Winston, OR]

    Redskins Sign Bidwell

The Redskins have signed free agent punter Josh Bidwell, the team announced on Tuesday.

Bidwell becomes the only punter currently on the Redskins’ roster. The team did not re-sign Hunter Smith, who served as punter last year.

Bidwell also becomes a candidate to serve as holder on field goal attempts. He served in that role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the last six years.

Bidwell, 6-3 and 220 pounds, is entering his 11th NFL season.

He played for Tampa Bay from 2004-09. Prior to joining the Buccaneers, he spent five years with the Green Bay Packers.

Bidwell missed the 2009 season after he sustained a hip injury. He was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 17, 2009.

He was released by Tampa Bay on March 4, 2010.

For his career, Bidwell has 727 punts for a 42.8-yard average. His career long punt is 68 yards and he has placed 209 punts inside the 20-yard line.

He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2005 after he averaged 45.6 yards per punt with a 37.5 net average for the Buccaneers.

Bidwell owns a Buccaneers club record in gross punting average (44-yard average), punting attempts (419) and punts inside the 20-yard line (124).

In addition, Bidwell holds the top four single-season gross punting averages in Buccaneers history (2005-08) and owns three of the top five single-season net punting averages in club history (2005, 2007-08).

Bidwell originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round (133rd overall) selection of the Packers in the 1999 NFL Draft.

He missed his rookie season (1999) after being placed on the reserve/non-football illness list.

Bidwell played college football at the University of Oregon, where he was a first-team All-Pac 10 selection and earned second-team Associated Press All-America honors as a senior. His punting average of 40.8 is the third-best in school history.

Bidwell, 34, is a native of Winston, Ore.

So it appears Hunter Smith's injury problems in 2009 were enough to get him booted.

Hunter did finish among the NFC's best in net yardage though, so some risk in changing horses.

The irony is that Bidwell has missed time as well.

Considering Danny Smith is still here I am surprised Smith and Albright were not brought back.

Which tells me we're going to see a series of young legs brought in between now and the end of training camp to compete. Can't see the team having serious intentions of entering 2010 with a 34-year-old punter coming off a hip injury that cost him all of last season.

Without looking it up, can anyone remember the last time we had a punter who held the job more than two continuous seasons?

But Allen knows him from Tampa and Shanahan likes veteran specialists.

Doubtfull that you will see a rookie come in here and claim a job.

The rumor was tha Smith wanted a multi-year contract with a bonus and the Redskins decided at 32 it was better to find a vet that would take a one year deal.

I'd feel better about that if Bidwell wasn't coming off season-ending hip injury, BD. Hard enough to bounce back from something like that as a youngster, much less a Methuselah.

Agreed it won't be a rookie who might take the job away, though. If anything I was thinking we'll probably see a steady stream of other vets and journeymen coming through Ashburn ... you know ... like it's been for-freakin'-ever around here.

Hope you're right and I'm just grumbling.

What annoys me is that the only team in the NFC East that hasn't got an Aussie punter on the roster is the Redskins.

Dallas has Mat McBriar, Philly has Sav Rocca and NYG's just signed Jy Bond. Even Green Bay have jumped on the Aussie wagon and signed Chris Bryan. Add the Cards' Ben Graham, and that makes 5 Aussies now on NFL rosters as punters.

C'mon Shanny, you'll never, never know if you don't at least give one a go!

Your opinion isn't biased is it Aussie? J/K

I honestly did not know that the other NFC East teams had Aussie punters. I have to think that if Shanny and Allen believe an Aussie punter could do the job then they would have him.

Didn't we try out an Aussie punter a couple years ago under the Gibbs regime and it did not work out? The name is escaping me....David Lonie. So it is not like they have not tried one out.

My opinion may be a little biased, but I think that there will be more Aussies becoming punters over the next few years, and if we are to get any of the cream, we have to sign one sooner, rather than later.

Of the Aussie punters now on rosters, only McBriar didn't play Aussie Rules. He was a soccer (football) player who attended college in Hawaii.

Yeah, David Lonie is an Aussie, but he also opted to go the college route, so is another who didn't play Aussie Rules at the highest level.

Apparently, the Eagles signed Sav's brother to a future's contract, but he decided that he wasn't ready to uplift his family and move to the US.
