The who has been cut thread - (merged)

No benefit comes from releasing Portis now. His contract is mostly guaranteed for this year, so we save nothing (or little) by cutting him. Best thing is what Shanny has seemingly done: put CP on a short leash with orders that he better work his ass off this offseason and come to the camps in great shape. I don't think they'll put up with much.

The benefit would be to get rid of a cancer. Worth the price if you ask me. Then he can get on with his career at eastern Motors

I have to admit I'm surprised Portis is still on the team. I guess the message that 'no one's job is safe' isn't exactly true.

Of all the names on the cut list, the one that really surprises me (or maybe just saddens me) is Rock. If ever the term 'blue collar' defined anyone on our team, it was him. And we've been short on blue collar for a long, long time now.

I guess the move makes sense. He's not getting any younger, and at this point he's a rather unspectacular player, but it's just too bad is all.

Oh well. Onward and upward.

it isnt shocking that CP is still here. he is guaranteed to get paid so why not see if he plays? you have nothing to lose

Concussions just don't go away. They accumulate. Portis may have something left in the tank but he also may not. If this is your one year to get rid of players without having to worry about cap ramifications I don't think you care about guaranteed money. You get rid of a player while it's cap-friendly to do so. So what if you have to pay Portis this year anyway? Snyder spends gobs of money all the time for players no longer on the roster.

You need very good vision in the zone block one cut and run game. I hope CP is getting back into game shape as well as working with specialist on his line of sight. He was having trouble with that before the concussion.

Damn

Redskins GM Bruce Allen confirmed that Clinton Portis' roster spot is safe for now.

“Right now [Portis is] our starting running back," Allen said, "and that's what our plans are." After yesterday's cutting spree, Portis is the only running back on the 'Skins roster. We're skeptical that that Portis, 28, can reverse his career trajectory even in new coach Mike Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme

Actually Gather is still on the team, isn't he? Maybe CP will be battling him for the starting spot.

However, I believe Anthony Alridge is still on the team. Shanahan gave him an endorsement last year when we signed him. Year before last he made it to the last round of cuts with Broncos.

Willie Parker to me is little better than Ladell Betts at this stage. Both are 29/30 and have sufffered through significant injury problems in recent seasons and have suffered reduced roles as a result.

Parker 3 or 4 years ago was a legit player, today he is another guy looking to hang on for another year or two.

I think that we all knew that there would be cuts - so that is not a surprise in itself. But Rock being cut I think is a mistake. I think that these cuts (excpet for Rock) sends a strong message that you either perfrom or get a job elsewhere. The new head coach and GM are making a statement and I think we will see a large improvement.

we could cut him but i believe his money is guaranteed. thats my only point. he MAY or may NOT have anything left in the tank but i think he is going to get his pockets straight regardless.
Exactly. There's not a reason on earth to cut him now. We have to pay him regardless. The right thing, which I believe Shanny is doing, is to keep him on a short leash. The message needs to be: come to all OTAs, mini-camps, and TC and be in the best shape of your career or else. If by TC it's obvious he's either not in shape, has been slacking in the offseason, or is obviously not cutting it anymore, then is the time to cut him.

I really think that Portis will come to camp in shape. He will be there the whole offseason. He has worked with Shanny before, so he knows what is expected of him. I am pulling for him, even though, I question whether or not he can stay healthy. For the most part he will keep his mouth shut. He knows his best years came under Shanny. He knows what it will take and he will want to get those years back. Whether he can or not is a seperate question.

I really hope that Landry stays away for the offseason like he has in the past. Hopefully this way they will get rid of his sorry butt.

I hope you are right. I'm pretty surprised that Portis is still around, especially after all the lockerroom conflicts that seemed to center around him. Hopefully Shanahan can spark a complete attitude 180 with CP, and he becomes the leader and hard-worker we wanted when we traded for him.

For the most part he will keep his mouth shut.

Dream on my friend, dream on :)
