Burner’s Burning Questions: Grades, Predictions, Evals, Questions, 2019 Season

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope your week is going well. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

The Redskins kicked off the 2019 home schedule on Sunday with an impressive first quarter, but the remaining three stanzas produced an anemic failure as they lost the home opener to the Cowboys. Today we assign grades and make a prediction for the next game. We also have a bonus for you today – what the Redskins should do in the 2020 free agency market.

BBQ would love to see your grades and evaluations each week if you are so inclined to do so. Too, your predictions for the next game are always appreciated. And, if you’re wanting to do more, feel free to put up 2020 a mock draft or share your ideas on 2020 free agency. There are no restrictions here. Go for it!

    Upcoming Dates:
    - Days until the Bears game: 4
    - Days until the Giants game: 10
    - Days until the Vikings game: 35
    - Days until the bye: 52

    Week Two: Grades and Evaluations

    Offense:
Much like last week, it would be easy to put a lot of blame on the offense and while it needs improvement, there were some encouraging signs. The running back position continues to be a disaster, but watching Wendell Smallwood in a limited, but solid role was encouraging. Steven Sims proved he can be effective on jet sweeps, screens, and slants. Ereck Flowers has emerged as the best offensive linemen in the first two games. Donald Penn had another good outing. Brandon Scherff struggled and Morgan Moses was improved over the first game. The wide receiving corps was decent, but Case Keenum struggled somewhat and three passes should’ve been intercepted (dropped by defensive backs).
    BBQ Grade: C-

    Defense:
Quite frankly, Sunday afternoon against the Cowboys was an unmitigated disaster – and that is being kind. Josh Norman will not return in 2020 – book it. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie proved that there is nothing left in the tank and now he heads to IR – he will not be missed. In fact, his career is over. The defensive line was awful. Montez Sweat improved from the previous game, but provided no pass rush. Cole Holcomb is the real deal, but production from the other inside linebackers was lacking. Ryan Kerrigan is off to a horrible start in 2019.
    BBQ Grade: D-

    Special Teams:
Tress Way continues to amaze and had another fantastic game. Dustin Hopkins was perfect on extra points. The kick and punt returns were fine and there were no glaring mistakes.
    BBQ Grade: B+

    Coaching:
If BBQ was able to grade on the first quarter alone, the report card would be glowing with high marks. Unfortunately for the Redskins coaching staff, the grades must incorporate the entire game. BBQ is perplexed as to why the defense runs a cover two, but has the safeties moving forward to cover short routes and the corners covering the longer routes. It’s like a backwards cover two and, quite frankly, it is not effective. An example: Josh Norman was playing far off the ball and rotated poorly on one play. A terrible pass prevented a catch and easy touchdown. The defense made no adjustments in the second half as the Cowboys dominated. A late Redskins touchdown made the score respectable, but it really had no impact at the end.
    BBQ Grade: D-

Week Three Prediction: Bears at Redskins
Oh boy, a Monday night game. Which Redskins team will show up on Monday? The first half Redskins? The second half Redskins? Chicago is a good team and they are hoping to make a deep run in the playoffs. Can the Redskins offense produce against a solid Bears defense? BBQ is not too hopeful and has concerns about playing a Monday night game.
Bears vs. Redskins: FedEx Field, Monday 8:15pm EDT
    Television: ESPN

BBQ Prediction: Bears 19 Redskins 14
    Current BBQ Record: 2-0

    Redskins Free Agency 2020
The Redskins are projected to have nearly $55M in cap space for 2020. A new CBA could push the total much higher. This may seem excessive, but generous cap space and so much more to be gained should be taken advantage of during this upcoming off-season. Here is what BBQ projects:
    1. Release Josh Norman - $12.5M additional cap space gained.
    2. Release Trent Williams - $12.75M additional cap space gained.
    3. Release Ryan Kerrigan - $11.75M additional cap space gained.
    4. Release Jordan Reed - $8.5M additional cap space gained.
    5. Release Quinton Dunbar - $3.5M additional cap space gained.
    6. Release Adrian Peterson - $2.25M additional cap space gained.
    7. Re-sign Brandon Scherff.
    8. Sign CB Byron Jones of the Cowboys.
    9. Sign TE Hunter Henry of the Chargers.
    10. Sign Edge Yannick Ngakoue of the Jaguars.
    11. Sign WR Robby Anderson of the Jets.
    12. Sign CB Ronald Darby of the Eagles.
    13. Sign CB Kendall Fuller of the Chiefs.
    14. Sign RT Jack Conklin of the Titans to a modest contract.

I was thinking Sweat would have at least a sack by now, or half a dozen pressures at minimum. Not sure what’s up with Payne and Ion either, those 2 are just going thru the motions it would seem.

We have the talent to beat the bears but I have almost zero faith in our coaching staff. Jay avoids the run game like a leper with rabies. That’s the only way we’re getting out of this funk, run it 30 times while picking your shots and play sound defense.

As far as the 2020 draft goes I think we need to bite the pillow and revamp the whole o-line. Both tackles and a sound guard need addressed. O-line and secondary, just alternate those areas for 7 rounds. Oh and a TE if we can’t sign one

With Williams at 31 and Moses having regressed since 2016 tackle has to be a priority.

Things would have been helped if #3 pick Geron Christian looked anywhere close to being ready to play.

But it appears he is another guy taken in Rounds 2-4 that underwhelms.

From Su’a Cravens to Matt Jones to Ryan Anderson to Christian and Apke.

All guys the team thought were steals at the time when it appears we were the only ones that got robbed.

Left tackle is going to be a first round choice in the draft next spring. Book it.

Right. You can’t trust Williams not to hold out again in 2020 even if he reports by Game 7 to qualify this season.

No videos this week. Too much going on, but what I did see is pretty much summed up here:

Left side of OL still doing well and Ereck Flowers has been the best OL in the first two games. Right side is still struggling a bit. Scherff had two costly penalties, but Moses did improve from the first game.

    Rushing offense is non-existent.

    Passing offense is above average.

Steven Sims could emerge as a potent offensive weapon. The same for Wendell Smallwood.

Montez Sweat is a solid run defender and is steadily improving his pass rush, but that still needs improvement. Ryan Kerrigan is struggling and suddenly looks older.

Cole Holcomb is the real deal, but the other ILBs are not producing.

The current cover two scheme (almost like a backwards/reverse cover two) is not working. Playing well off the ball is a mistake.

Greg Manusky is on thin ice.

I'll post the grades tomorrow and offer a new prediction. I thought about skipping this week as it is difficult to even think of what a massive train wreck the Redskins have become under Dan Snyder, Bruce Allen, Jay Gruden, and Greg "I never learned anything about the blitz" Manusky. It will be posted along with a new mock draft.

At what point do we call it quits as fans? I'm definitely not there, but a few thoughts have entered my head. With Snyder owning the team, it will always be a train wreck. Nothing will change. I have the five Super Bowl memories - three of them brought trophies. I'm older than the owner, so I won't see another Super Bowl win. That's a given.

My hope for those of you who are younger - stay positive and outlive Dan Snyder by a bunch of years. You deserve to have a great owner and a Super Bowl team.

    It’s a mess alright.

With so many of the talented players on this team under 25 and needing coaching it’s very hard to grade them or evaluate their upside. It will be up to the next staff to ensure these players climb the ladder.

As an insider Thomas Dimitroff said the key to New England’s success over time was in putting together the best 53 man team and not merely a collection of good athletes. Belichick called it the pattern of some teams to be slaves to measurables, drafting guys that run 4.35 but don’t have a natural position in the NFL or are injury prone.

Here in DC we have seen no demonstrable plan to forge a true team where the abilities of the players sync.

That’s why the Redskins have no discernible identity.

We run a 3-4 scheme but continue to draft 4-3 sized linebackers, defensive linemen, etc.

We want to run an up tempo flexible run/pass scheme but started the year with between the tackles power runners in Peterson and Guice.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Grades, Predictions, Evals, Questions, 2019 Season

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope your week is going well. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

The Redskins continued their long term futility on Monday nights with an embarrassing performance for the ages. The laughable display of ineptitude against the Bears has fans fuming and questioning what the team is doing after dismal games to start the season. Today we assign grades and make a prediction for the next game. We also include what the Redskins should do in the 2020 free agency market. Also, we have a 2020 mock draft!

BBQ would love to see your grades and evaluations each week if you are so inclined to do so. Too, your predictions for the next game are always appreciated. And, if you’re wanting to do more, feel free to put up 2020 a mock draft. There are no restrictions here. Go for it!

    Upcoming Dates:
    - Days until the Giants game: 4
    - Days until the Patriots game: 11
    - Days until the Vikings game: 29
    - Days until the bye: 46
    - Days until Thanksgiving: 64
    - Days until the Eagles game: 81
    - Days until Christmas: 91

    Week Three: Grades and Evaluations
    Offense:
The offense was absolutely horrendous in the first half. Nothing worked. The efforts appeared to be much less than 100%. Case Keenum was ineffective and on a key fourth down play with less than a yard to go from the Bears fifteen yard line, he dove above the pile as if it was the goal line. The Redskins could’ve scored on that series and be less than one touchdown from winning the game. The play resulted in a fumble. Game over.
    BBQ Grade: F

    Defense:
The first half was very ugly. There were no highlights to mention. Josh Norman proved that he is no longer a reliable shutdown corner. The defense did have some good plays in the second half, but Keenum was a turnover machine and the defensive efforts were wasted.
    BBQ Grade: D-

    Special Teams:
Tress Way had a decent game, but not as good as we saw in the first two games. Dustin Hopkins missed a forty-three yard field goal in the first half – a time when any points were sorely needed. Steven Sims was solid with kick returns and Trey Quinn had no glaring mistakes as the punt returner.
    BBQ Grade: C-

    Coaching:
Other than showing some signs of life for a while in the second half, the team was struggling all night and there were many times when the play calling was pathetic. There was no leadership from the sideline.
    BBQ Grade: F

Week Four Prediction: Redskins at Giants
Many pundits thought this would be a victory for the Redskins a few weeks ago. Now it looks like this game could be another struggle for the Burgundy and Gold. Case Keenum needs to rid himself of the awful stench from Monday night’s game. The defense needs a better focus and direction. The season could be lost if the Redskins come up short on Sunday.
Redskins vs. Giants: MetLife Stadium – Meadowlands Sports Complex, Sunday 1pm EDT
    Television: FOX
BBQ Prediction: Giants 34 Redskins 21
    Current BBQ Record: 3-0

    Redskins Free Agency 2020
The Redskins are projected to have nearly $54M in cap space for 2020.
    12. Sign CB Kendall Fuller of the Chiefs.
    13. Sign RT Jack Conklin of the Titans to a modest contract.

    In-Season Mock Draft Two
The Redskins trade a down few positions with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders from very early in the first round and gain the following: Both of the Raiders first rounders. A second rounder. A 2021 first rounder. A 2021 fourth rounder.
Round One: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
Round One: Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
Round Two: Alaric Jackson, OT, Iowa
Round Three: Colby Parkinson, TE, Stanford
Round Four: Ashtyn Davis, FS, California
Round Four (Comp): Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
Round Five: Tipa Galea’i, OLB, Utah St.
Round Seven: Solomon Kindley, OG, Georgia
Round Seven: Antonio Gandy-Golden, WR, Liberty

A lot of those contracts for players we probably wouldn’t resign for what they delivered.

Case Keenum was in a walking boot today and did not practice. Jay seems to believe he'll be fine to go on Sunday, but remains to be seen.

I'm not one of those that believes there's any chance Colt McCoy would get the start if Keenum can't go.

    Never say never with Gruden.

He still has the same flaws he came in with, the job hasn’t tempered him or allowed him to become a better communicator or leader.

It’s been much of the same crap for six years and questionable loyalty to fringe players is part of that profile.

Redskins have released WR Robert Davis as well as dropped Adonis Alexander from the practice squad. No word yet on moves to fill those spots.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Grades, Predictions, Evals, Questions, 2019 Season

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope your week is going well. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

The Redskins continue to see their 2019 season slip away and if the NFL draft was held today, the Burgundy and Gold would have the first overall pick in 2020. The horrible display against the Giants has fans fuming and calling for the heads of the coach, defensive coordinator, and team president. Today we assign grades and make a prediction for the next game. We also include what the Redskins should do in the 2020 free agency market. Also, we have a 2020 mock draft and it includes two trades.

BBQ would love to see your grades and evaluations each week if you are so inclined to do so. Too, your predictions for the next game are always appreciated. Give us your thoughts on 2020 free agency. And, if you’re wanting to do more, feel free to put up 2020 a mock draft. There are no restrictions here. Go for it!

    Upcoming Dates:
    - Days until the Patriots game: 4
    - Days until the Vikings game: 22
    - Days until Halloween: 29
    - Days until the bye: 39
    - Days until Thanksgiving: 57
    - Days until the Eagles game: 74
    - Days until Christmas: 84

    Week Four: Grades and Evaluations
    Offense:
The offense was absolutely horrendous for the entire game. Case Keenum can’t connect with wide open receivers. Dwayne Haskins was ineffective. There is no rushing offense. Nothing worked. The efforts appeared to be much less than 100%. Adrian Peterson suddenly looks like a fifty year old in quicksand. Donald Penn is taking penalty acquisition instructions from Morgan Moses. There is one positive and it is a very pleasant surprise. Ereck Flowers continues to be the best offensive lineman for the Redskins.
    BBQ Grade: F

    Defense:
There was very little to like. The offensive line of the Giants made mincemeat of the Redskins defensive line. The linebackers struggled. One exception was Noah Spence – he provided some good speed off the edge and had some solid pressure on the quarterback. There only highlights to mention were the interceptions against a rookie quarterback. Josh Norman had another subpar game. Ryan Anderson is close to being a bust.
    BBQ Grade: D

    Special Teams:
Tress Way had a good game, but one punt was not up to his usual standards. Dustin Hopkins connected on a field goal. A sixty-six yard kickoff return was negated by a block in the back penalty.
    BBQ Grade: C

    Coaching:
The Giants scare no one, but the Redskins struggled in North Jersey on Sunday. The offense was totally inept. The defense wasn’t far behind. There is nothing more to add.
    BBQ Grade: F

Week Five Prediction: Patriots at Redskins
The only real question would be, “how many points will the Patriots score”? It could get very ugly in the first ten minutes.
Patriots vs. Redskins: FedEx Field – Landover, MD, Sunday 1pm EDT
    Television: CBS
BBQ Prediction: Patriots 51 Redskins 10
    Current BBQ Record: 4-0

    Redskins Free Agency 2020
The Redskins are projected to have nearly $54M in cap space for 2020.
    12. Sign CB Kendall Fuller of the Chiefs.
    13. Sign RT Jack Conklin of the Titans to a modest contract.

    In-Season Mock Draft Three
The Redskins trade a down few positions with the Miami Dolphins from very in the first round and gain the following: Two of the earliest Dolphins first rounders. A second rounder. A 2021 first rounder. A 2022 second rounder. The Redskins trade down in round one again and gain an extra second rounder and a fourth rounder.

I think with the state of the DBs and the pending release of Josh Norman I would be looking for a CB early rather than a WR.

We have young receivers to develop.

If anything we need a veteran WR with size to be the leader of the group.

If I were Dwayne Haskins, I’d make very sure I looked a lot less more like the OSU QB last year than how I looked last week the rest of the way (assuming he gets significant playing time). If the Redskins do have one of the top couple of picks, they’d be foolish not to draft Tua, Herbert, or Fromm unless they are certain Haskins is who they thought he was.

Right. Which is exactly why Gruden has to go after the NE game.

We need those last 11 games to evaluate him with a scheme that allows for a sensible transition where Dwayne can start with a core number of plays to execute and add to it a few more each week.
