Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Summer is knocking on the door and OTAs begin today. Also today, we evaluate the free agents that have been added this off-season. These evaluations are highly subjective, but we will attempt to look into the future and see what kind of impact each player will have with the Redskins. Will there be any long term starters? Will there be players who provide depth? Who will have a long term future with the Redskins? Who will have a short career with the team?

Later this week we will begin to evaluate roster positions and see what kind of impact players will have in 2019. We hope to post reports from OTAs each day.

Upcoming Dates:
- Days until OTAs: Today
- Days until mandatory mini-camp: 15
- Days until the first NFL preseason game: 73
- Days until the 2019 Regular Season Opener: 108

Let's get right to it.

Free Agents Obtained:

Reuben Foster, ILB
Foster was added late in 2018, but was on the commissioner's exempt list and did not play in the final games of the season with the Redskins. That makes him a new free agent in 2019. He is an immediate upgrade at inside linebacker and is one of the best in the league at his position. His addition makes this solid defense even that much better. If he can stay clear of injuries and personal troubles, Foster will have a huge impact for years to come.

Landon Collins, SS
The big signing in free agency occurred on the first day. Landon Collins is an excellent addition to the secondary and he will rejoin many of his former Alabama teammates. Coupled with the Reuben Foster addition, the Redskins defense became even better. Collins will drop back in coverage quite often and will be a second free safety at times. Look for him to have a good impact in the coming years.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB
A difficult free agent to judge at this juncture of his career. He's certainly not the same player that terrorized offenses earlier this decade, but Rodgers-Cromartie could be a valuable contributor on passing downs and in prevent defensive formations. Making the roster of fifty-three is no guarantee. Will he play free safety at times? Training camp and preseason games could answer some of these questions.

Case Keenum, QB
Keenum was acquired via a trade, but we will include him in this list. For now, he could be the starter at quarterback. His role depends on the progress of rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Two years ago, Keenum impressed as the starter in Minnesota and could return to form in 2019. At the very least, he will be a quality backup.

Ereck Flowers, OG/OT
Ereck Flowers has been a bust at offensive tackle, but he is switching to guard with the Redskins and hopes to salvage his career. Scouting reports coming out of college had him moving to the inside, but prior teams started him at tackle out of necessity and the results were disastrous. Flowers could improve on the inside, but he is looking at a backup role in the long term if he can make this change.

Brian Quick, WR
Brian Quick was thought to be a diamond in the rough coming out of Appalachian St. as a rookie, but his career has been one of a journeyman. That being said, he does bring experience to a young receiving corps and could provide a good measure of veteran leadership. Familiarity with the offensive system may help his cause when the roster is narrowed down to fifty-three, but BBQ believes that he is nothing more than an experienced camp body for now.

Remaining Free Agents
This group of players will be fighting for roster positions, but available slots will be few and far between. The Redskins could add one or two of the remaining quality free agents on the market at any time, but such moves for this front office are difficult to predict.

In Conclusion:
The list of free agent acquisitions is small for 2019, but the quality is quite good. Several of these players should have a positive impact this year. Some of these observations could be too optimistic. Some could be too pessimistic. How do you think the Redskins careers of these players will unfold? Feel free to agree or disagree. Too, feel free to post any of your career evaluations and expectations of these Redskins free agents.

Once again, we will begin to evaluate roster positions later this week and see what kind of impact players will have in 2019. We hope to post reports from OTAs each day. See you as we go along.

Scherff is one bad mother shut your mouth. If we could just get the attitude he and Trent display to carry over to the rest of the line we'd be unstoppable.

Dammit, we're all too used to that sound and know what it means. Hope he heals quickly

Of course. It's what we do. I guess if I'm trying to be positive, if it's not a ligament issue, better now than closer to the season. Sounds bad though. Sheesh. Poor guy. And poor us.

Yeah, unless you are LeSean McCoy, the worst fears are normally confirmed with these types of injuries. For those of you that don't understand the LeSean McCoy reference, multiple times a year he goes down with what looks like a career ending injury, only to return later in the game and usually dominate. I've had him on my team in fantasy football several times so I pay attention to his injuries. What I can't figure out is what he is doing differently than everyone else that his brutal looking injuries turn out to be nothing, while most everyone else in the league it is the worst case scenario 90% of the time.

Come on, we can't even get a freakin semi-dry practice field, on the one day of the year, that the players are least conditioned ?

Let's not start the ridiculous blame game. There will be plenty of assholes on Twitter who will do that for us :) They're outside. Sometimes grass has dew on it. For God's sake - are we going to criticize the team because they don't have 'field blowers' to make sure the grass outside is 100% without moisture before practices now?

I love you Fear - but please...
