Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,
Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you have had a good week. Hello to everyone on social media. We'd love to have you as a member here and become part of the family.
OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, and the draft have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here in less than one month. We'll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.
BBQ continues our off-season evaluations and today we will take a look at the tight ends. Feel free to scroll back in this off-season blog and see what we have said about free agency, the draft, and take a look at what your fellow Redskins think of the team transactions over the last several months. BBQ will continue to take a look at each position and provide analysis over the next few weeks. Feel free to offer your own analysis as we go along.
- Days until Training Camp: 27
- Days until the first preseason game: 41
- Days until the Regular Season Opener (Eagles): 72
- Days until the Cowboys game: 79
- Days until the Giants game: 100
Let's get right to it!
Tight Ends:
Jordan Reed
No one doubts the talent that Jordan Reed possesses and it is not a debate that can be disputed, but questioning his endurance season to season is fair game. Can he stay healthy? If Reed can produce an injury free 2019 and play in each game, then his numbers will be impressive. Reed's lofty contract numbers could mean that this is his last season in a Redskins uniform and the financial numbers don't lie. The Redskins would save $17.5M and have a cap hit of $1.8M. Will he perform like an athlete who wants to be paid one more time? BBQ forecasts 45 reception for 520 yards and 4 touchdowns. BBQ also forecasts five games missed due to injury.
Vernon Davis
Vernon Davis is in the final year of his contract and is certainly in the final year of his time with the Redskins. He will be 36 next year and is unlikely to score any kind of substantial contract with any team. If Davis elects to continue his career, it will be on a low budget contract. That being said, he has been a true warrior for the Redskins and has produced many clutch plays in recent seasons. His current age has defied the odds and 2019 could be another fine season, but it wouldn't be overly surprising if there was a bit of regression. If Davis can continue his stellar play, then it could help to mitigate any time that Jordan Reed may miss due to injury. BBQ forecasts 20 catches for 280 yards and one touchdown.
Jeremy Sprinkle
Jeremy Sprinkle is set to resume his role as a blocking tight end in 2019 and he is effective in that assignment. His production as a receiver is lacking and it would be correct to assume that this upcoming season will produce more of the same. Sprinkle has two years remaining on his contract and with the Redskins likely needing two new tight ends next year, his place on the roster is safe. The contract is cheap and he provides solid blocking when needed. That is his role and nothing will change. BBQ forecasts 5 receptions for 45 yards and no touchdowns.
Others
Popular longshots Matt Flanagan and J.P. Holtz have little to no chance of making the final cut. Flanagan could be added late in the season if an injury occurs to Reed, Davis, or Sprinkle. If an injury occurs to one of those players in the preseason or early in the regular season, look for the Redskins to add a veteran tight end. Donald Parham is an intriguing prospect, but he is very raw and likely two years away from having a chance to be on the roster of fifty-three. Flanagan, Holtz, and Parham are candidates for the practice squad.
Additional Thoughts
It is all but certain that this will be the final season for Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis. Reed's cap hit (if he is cut) is very low. Davis will see his contract expire and he turns 36 this coming January. The Redskins are likely to add a solid tight end in the early rounds of the 2020 draft and a late rounder as well. Too, look for at least two UDFA tight end signings next spring. Jeremy Sprinkle will likely be retained for two reasons – his blocking skills and a team friendly contract (he is under contract for the next two years).
There is our latest look at roster position evaluations for this off-season. We will feature another position early next week.
