Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I'm honestly getting the vibe that Scherff wants out of maroon and black. Could be completely wrong here and actually hope that I am. But, has anyone ever heard Brandon state he loves being a skin, or wants to retire one? An interview where he's optimistic of the franchise's future, with him in it?

Guessing here but almost every picture I've come across Brandon in a redskin uniform he looks miserable, or at the very least disenchanted. Like Captain Greedy did before sprinting to Mn

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you had a good weekend. Hello to everyone on social media. We'd love to have you as a member here and become part of the family.

OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, and the draft have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here later next week. We'll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations and today we will take a look at the outside linebackers/edge rushers. Feel free to scroll back in this off-season blog and see what we have said about free agency, the draft, and take a look at what your fellow Redskins fans think of the team transactions over the last several months. BBQ will continue to take a look at each position and provide analysis over the next few weeks. Feel free to offer your own analysis as we go along.

- Days until Training Camp: 9
- Days until the first preseason game: 23
- Days until the Regular Season Opener (Eagles): 54
- Days until the Cowboys game: 61
- Days until the Giants game: 82

Let's get right to it!

Outside Linebackers/Edge Rushers:

Ryan Kerrigan
Ryan Kerrigan continues to be one of the best outside linebackers in the NFL. His motor never quits and while he may not put up massive numbers, it's the solid consistency Kerrigan displays each year and that makes him one of the NFL's elite. The Redskins have more talent and depth this season and that should help Kerrigan from carrying too much of a workload. BBQ forecasts 11 sacks, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries.

Montez Sweat
Don't be surprised if Montez quickly asserts himself as the best outside linebacker/pass rusher on the team. He has the supreme talent to be a double digit sack specialist for a decade or more. Too, look for him to be effective against short passes, screens, and slants. If Sweat remains in a Redskins uniform for the duration of his career, he will go down as one of the all-time greats for the team. BBQ forecasts 10 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries – with one being returned for a touchdown.

Ryan Anderson
Ryan Anderson was chosen in the second round of the 2017 draft and most pundits rated him as a third or fourth rounder. BBQ had him rated as a late third rounder, but former general manager Scot McCloughan made the move. Anderson has not lived up to his lofty draft status, but the Alabama product improved in his second season. Anderson looks to continue his backup role and will likely give Sweat a rest at times. This season needs to be Anderson's time to make positive strides. BBQ forecasts 3 sacks and 1 fumble recovery.

Marcus Smith, Marquis Flowers, Cassanova McKinzy
Can Marcus Smith live up to his 2014 first round potential or will he come up short again? This could be his last chance to make any kind of impact in the NFL. Marquis Flowers has been mostly a special teams player in recent years, but he will need to demonstrate better skills at OLB. Cassanova McKinzy was thought to be nothing more than a camp fodder type of athlete, but he flashed some good skills as the season progressed. He could have the inside track to a roster spot over Smith and Flowers.

Others
Andrew Ankrah will be a longshot to make the roster, but he might be good enough to find a place on the practice squad.

Jordan Brailford
Fans and pundits may think Jordan Brailford has a place on the roster due to being a 2019 seventh round draft pick. That's hard to argue, but the competition will be undoubtedly spirited and intense. The Oklahoma St. product will need to step forward quickly as a rookie and prove himself in training camp and the preseason.

There is our latest look at roster position evaluations for this off-season. We will feature another position later this week.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

As in any contract negotiation - there are two parties involved. You can't pay a lineman like a QB - I don't care how good he is. They will have other critical guys to pay going forward and there are only so many huge contracts you can carry and retain most of your desired guys.

I think they'll make him a hell of an offer but if he's expecting insane money he may end up franchises and we may ultimately lose him. Just as with Cousins, if a guy only wants to get paid by the highest bidder, it's always going to be tough to retain him. It's not a Redskins problem.

You know what they've offered? You make it sound like the Skins have offered him the moon.

You know what I see in his images? A guy from big country, hunting/fishing...not the swamp. I would not be a bit surprised if he wants out of the shit hole that is DC/NOVA/MD. If I could get my wife away, I'd be outta here in a heartbeat!

I just hope the Skins know...if he is not going to sign anything, then they can't get all bent out of shape and make him play at the highest rate possible for 3 or 4 years because of spite like they did with Cousins.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Because the Skins have a long history of UNDERpaying for guys, right El? Why on earth would they not be offering him as much as they felt they reasonably could - you make it sound like the plan is to lowball him? As if they don't really have any interest in retaining him?

Takes two to tango. We if any fans out there should have learned that by now.

It appears that the Redskins gained $825,000 in cap space here. Makes you wonder if this was always a part of the plan.

Yeah I could see that angle too. There's no way in hell I could live anywhere close to the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is DC/Maryland. Though after being in Alaska I could never live in a large city period.

If Bruce and company know this then I would hope they're seeking possible trade partners. Again "if"

Either way I see the 2020 draft needing the majority of focus spent on o-line and TE's. It's unfortunate that we have 2 starters that are basically refusing to commit to the future, but it is what it is.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I've said myself many times, the DMV is not a very attractive place to live anymore. That's a very valid point.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Maybe he wants to be the highest paid guard in the league, is he worth being the highest paid guard in the league beating out Zack Martin? Maybe it's he wants a 3 year deal instead of 4-5 to explore FA sooner ala the NBA as salaries keep rising in all leagues. Maybe he does hate the area, hell nothing could get me to move back except massive duckets and he's already got that. Maybe he finds the organization dysfunctional and would prefer a different opportunity. Lot's of maybe's to consider, not a damn thing though we know for sure.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Could just be the advice of his agent. Hold out to the very last second, and see if the team will sweeten the pot.

Could be waiting to see how they handle Pot Head Dumb Dumb.

I think what I balk at is the immediate assumption by some fans that if there is an issue, it's got to be about FO dysfunction or lowball offers. I think that's a massive assumption. It certainly could be those are factors but as don't think there's any basis for assuming they are - certainly reading ‘body language' is a stretch imho :)

The 2nd contract-related tweet BB posted is powerful. But if you look at the names of the majority of those players, the issue wasn't not resigning them, it's that our talent acquisition sucked. Would we feel better if 2/3rds of those players had continued being long-term Redskins? I think not.
