Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Today we begin a process of player evaluations that will focus on recent draftees. In the coming days and weeks, we will also evaluate UDFAs (later this week), newly acquired free agents, and current veterans (by position). We have ten players to look at today.

These evaluations are highly subjective, but we will attempt to look into the future and see what kind of impact each player will have with the Redskins. Will there be any long term starters? Will there be players who provide depth? Who will be a practice squad hero? Who will have a short career in football? Who will have memories of lasting one summer in the NFL?

    Upcoming Dates:
    - Days until OTAs: 6
    - Days until mandatory mini-camp: 21
    - Days until the first NFL preseason game: 79
    - Days until the 2019 Regular Season Opener: 114

    Let’s get right to it.

    Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio St.
BBQ encourages you to go and read the recent thread that contains various game films and see what we can expect from Haskins. The potential is there. Could the Redskins have their first franchise quarterback since Sonny Jurgensen? Don’t be surprised if he sits early in the season, but he may start on day one.

    Montez Sweat, Edge/OLB, Mississippi St.
A likely starter on day one and could hit double digit sacks in his first season. Could be the edge rusher the Redskins have seeking for many years. The team needs to avoid over-using him too much as we have seen with J.J. Watt or Vonn Miller.

    Terry McLaurin, WR, Ohio St.
McLaurin is going to surprise many of the doubters as he is a hidden gem of sorts. Other receivers garnered more attention during the draft, but McLaurin will be a solid addition to the wide receivers unit. He has plenty of speed, dependable hands, and rarely makes mistakes.

    Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
If Bryce Love would’ve avoided a serious injury late in the 2018 season, he was going to be the first running back taken in the draft – probably a top twenty pick. He may start the season on the PUP list, but his impact in the coming years will be spectacular.

    Wes Martin, OG, Indiana
Very little was known about Martin when he was drafted. BBQ noticed a scouting report in early February that listed him as a UDFA prospect and nothing more. Suddenly, he is well known. Martin could start day one at left guard and has the potential to keep that status for a decade or more. Keep an eye on him in the various camps and preseason.

    Ross Pierschbacher, OG/C, Alabama
Taking an Alabama prospect is nothing new to the Redskins, but Ross Pierschbacher is not a day one starter. He was drafted for depth purposes on the offensive line. He can play guard and center and this versatility will afford him the opportunity for playing time if injuries become an issue. Is he a starter in the coming years? Possibly.

    Cole Holcomb, ILB, North Carolina
Cole Holcomb is a player that was rated as a fourth rounder by BBQ and that is one of the reasons why he was never a consideration in our coverage of the draft. We thought ILB would be a focus in the final two rounds. He has blazing speed and will push for a lot of playing time in his first season. Look for Holcomb to be a special teams ace.

Kelvin Harmon, WR, North Carolina St.
Harmon was the steal of the draft – period. Look for him to play with a major chip on his shoulder and shine with the burgundy and gold. Harmon had pro day numbers that were similar to former first round pick Laquon Treadwell and that is why his stocked dropped. Harmon will prove many of the naysayers wrong.

    Jimmy Moreland, CB, James Madison
Undersized. Underrated. Underdog. Moreland has the attitude and the overwhelming ego, but he backs it up – plain and simple. However, there are many talented cornerbacks on the roster and it is difficult to see where he could be a fit. The practice squad is a possibility, but it is likely that another team will snatch him up quickly. It’s a good problem to have these days.

    Jordan Brailford, Edge/OLB, Oklahoma St.
It’s difficult to know if Brailford will make the roster of fifty-three. Some scouting services had him rated as a fourth round prospect. Others had him listed as a priority UDFA and a few had no grade at all. BBQ never really scouted him as we thought a late round edge player was not a possibility. So how do we grade his chances? Brailford played well against lesser competition, but struggled against Big12 foes. That is certainly not in his favor and BBQ thinks he could be a candidate for the practice squad.

    In Conclusion
There is our first off-season analysis of the current roster. We are in the very early stages of trying to figure out who will be on the roster of fifty-three. We will have reports, analyses, roster predictions, coverage of the various camps/OTAs, the remainder of free agency, and any Redskins news. See you as we go along.

I'm very curious what transpired to cause him to go from being a total unknown or non-prospect all the way until draft day, to being good enough to be a starter from Day 1, and through the next 10+ years, after just a few weeks since draft day ?

That is quite an impressively huge and sudden jump in stock/potential, in such a short period of time, wouldn't you say ?

Montae Nicholson had his assault charges dropped.
Apparently, we're now just waiting to see if the league applies discipline, which doesn't seem likely. Or at leas it shouldn't.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Free Agency is not over and there are occasional rumblings here and there. This is our latest free agency update for the off-season and the 2019 season continues to inch closer.

As free agency continues to a certain degree, things will become much clearer over the summer. Will Alex Smith ever return from a brutal injury? Does Case Keenum start on day one or will it be Dwayne Haskins? What kind of changes will we see to the roster? Those are some of the biggest questions still to be answered in the 2019 off-season.

Who will we target in free agency? Who will we re-sign? Who will we not re-sign? Who will get released? Feel free to offer your opinions and predictions.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days, weeks and months.

    Re-structure Contract Candidates:
    Alex Smith, QB

    2019 Dead Money Contracts:
    DJ Swearinger ($1.33M)
    Orlando Scandrick ($500K)
    Zach Brown ($3M)
    Stacy McGee ($2.4M)

    Off-Season Updates:
The current Redskins cap room currently stands at $9.88M for 2019. When Montez Sweat and Terry McLaurin sign their contracts, the Redskins will have a cap at $8.9M. Re-signing Brandon Scherff will provide more cap room. Releases and re-structures will also increase the cap room.

If Josh Norman is released, he would count $3M in dead money for 2019. Cutting him would save $11.5M. Overall savings would be $8.5M. However, BBQ doubts he will be released.

We know absolutely nothing on Alex Smith, but he will obviously not return in 2019. Will he be ready for the 2020 season? Is his career over? Will he retire? Will he give the Redskins any cap relief? No one knows, but we’ll stay on top of it.

The extension given to Matt Ioannidis was for three years. He was set to be a free agent next year.

    Personal Thoughts:
Here is a list of remaining players that I would like for the Redskins to consider in free agency. Not all of them can be signed, but these are a few I like.
    Tre Boston, FS, Arizona
    Shane Ray, OLB, Denver
    Michael Crabtree, WR

    In Conclusion:
The free agency updates will continue as new information is available.

I hope DRC turns out to be better than Scandrick.
Irony is, once Scandrick hit KC, he played pretty well.
Or maybe having a supporting cast like Kendall Fuller had something to do with it.

Yea, but if we cut Norman this offseason just due to him being overpaid, how does that not leave us in a disaster at corner ?
Would we go into the season depending on the corner threesome of Dunbar, Moreau, and Stroman ?
That does not leave me feeling much assured, even if you throw in DRC (he might very well be done).
He talks about Moreland may be great someday, but you don't bank on him being good this year.
If you're gonna cut Norman for salary reasons, ya gotta do it next year.

Ion was on a tear until he was banged up in the later part of the season. Not sure if it's a byproduct having Payne and Allen around him or not but still pretty damn disruptive .

I'd personally rather see Reed cut than Norman. Curious though, has Norman been on record of not wanting to do a restructure?

No word about Norman wanting to do a re-structure and the team probably doesn't want to do one.

New Scherff contract probably happens just before training camp or shortly thereafter. The team may wait until next winter, but that doesn't seem likely.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

BBQ continues a process of player evaluations and the focus today centers on the undrafted free agents. In the coming days and weeks, we will also evaluate newly acquired free agents and current veterans (by position). We have several players to look at today.

    - Days until OTAs: 3
    - Days until mandatory mini-camp: 18
    - Days until the first NFL preseason game: 76
    - Days until the 2019 Regular Season Opener: 111

    Let’s get right to it.

    Deion Harris, CB/FS, North Dakota
At 6-3, 200 Harris is an imposing figure at corner and free safety. He has a chance at making the roster of fifty-three, but probably more as a FS. At the very least, he is a strong candidate for the practice squad.

    Ryan Bee, DL, Marshall
Ryan Bee is facing a crowded situation on the defensive line, but at 6-7, 285 he is an interesting prospect. He had a solid career at Marshall and while the numbers may not be in his favor, the future could still look good for him. A likely candidate for the practice squad, but any number of injuries to front line starters could give Bee an opportunity.

    Andrew Ankrah, Edge/OLB, James Madison
Ankrah was a stud for the Orlando Apollos of the now defunct AAF. He will face an uphill battle to make the roster, but his performances with the Apollos could point to a spot on the practice squad. Ankrah attended NFL several mini camps over the last couple of years, but he never signed with a team. He now has a shot and must take advantage of this opportunity.

    B.J. Blunt, ILB, McNeese St.
As another small college prospect who thrived against lesser competition, Blunt could surprise at the next level. He will need a year on the practice squad, but could push for a roster spot in 2020. Excellent size for an ILB and possesses the intangibles to succeed. He will need to become a special teams standout as well.

    JoJo McIntosh, FS, Washington
If you are going to focus on one player amongst the UDFAs to follow, watch this young man. He has a realistic shot at making the roster and should produce a serious push to be on the team in September. At the very least, McIntosh could force Troy Apke to take notice. Even if he is not on the roster of fifty-three, McIntosh will likely be on the practice squad.

    Steven Sims, WR, Kansas
There has been some hype from various pundits regarding Sims (yes, another UDFA with the last name of Sims), but he generated little in the way of headlines. Kansas is a porous program and that obscured his name even further. He is short in stature and slender, but did produce a fairly respectable college career. Sims still faces an uphill battle, but he may find a place on the practice squad.

    Jerald Foster, OG, Nebraska
Foster certainly looks the part with his prototypical size, but he faces an uphill battle. This Cornhusker will need to improve considerably if he wants to make the practice squad.

    Jonathan Bonner, DE, Notre Dame
Like Foster, Bonner certainly looks the part with his prototypical size, but he faces an uphill battle as well. Bonner will need to improve considerably if he wants to make the practice squad.

    Chidi Okeke, OT, Tennessee St.
Okeke has an outside chance of making the roster, but he will have several players ahead of him on the depth chart. The practice squad is his likely destination this fall.

Austin Maloata, DeMarquis Gates, Craig Reynolds, Juwann Bushell-Beatty, T.J. Rahming
Camp bodies. Practice sleds. Pad and helmet carriers. Gatorade bottle providers. Making the practice squad will be a struggle. The Arena League is hiring.

    In Conclusion
There is our second off-season analysis of the current roster. We are in the very early stages of trying to figure out who will be on the roster of fifty-three.
