TRESS WAY NAMED NFC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The National Football League announced today that Washington Redskins P Tress Way has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the team's Week 10 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It is the first time that Way has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in his career. He becomes the 14th player in franchise history to earn the award and the 17th special team player to earn the honor. In addition, Way is the first Redskins punter to be selected since Hunter Smith in Week 14 of the 2009 season.
Against the Buccaneers, Way recorded five punts for 247 yards with an average of 49.4 yards per punt including a net average of 47.8 yards. He pinned four of his five punts inside the 20-yard line which was the most by any punter in Week 10. Way registered a 58-yard punt, the fifth longest in the NFL this season, and the third longest in the NFC last week. His punt average was tied for the second best mark in the league, first in the NFC, and his net average led all punters in Week 10.
This season, Way has punted the ball 42 times for 1,842 yards with an average of 43.9 yards per punt with a net average of 41.1 yards. Among his 42 punts, he has pinned 25 inside the 20-yard line which currently ranks third in the NFL. His net average of 41.1 yards currently ranks eighth in the NFL.
Entering the 2018 campaign, Way had two career games with four or more punts pinned inside the 20-yard line and through nine games this season, he has surpassed that total with three games. He pinned a career high five punts inside the 20-yard line against the Dallas Cowboys (Week 7) and landed four punts inside the 20-yard line against Tampa Bay (Week 10) and against the Atlanta Falcons (Week 9).
