Just take a look at the new left guard. It's just one game and he did have two holding calls. Not bad for being in the system for less than a week. Not ready to say he is the left guard for the next few years, but this is encouraging.

Watch all the videos. A nice learning tool for seeing what line play is all about.

He had a good first game. It's encouraging. I want a sample of several games before saying we should sign him to a multi-year extension.

    I loves the hustle.
Where he's hungrily prowling everywhere for someone to hit.
Pushes one guy into the LT's control, then with zero hesitation runs the other way to slam another guy.
It's like he's playing for a job interview.
But if he can play like that all the time, wow.

The Bucs game is some evidence of what I have been saying all along, namely that Shawn Lauvao and several other players who the organization can't seem to move on from are actually at or below replacement level.

You can literally go on the street and find a veteran who can come in and play as well.

To me the Redskins really did get too cute with that #4 pick which we wasted on an athlete in Troy Apke who really didn't have an NFL position. He had played safety for ONE year in college and his biggest selling point was he was a white guy that runs fast

And before anyone gets uppity with me, I am a white guy myself

    Just acknowledging the truth.

We would have been better served looking for help in the interior OL with that pick or by signing a veteran in free agency.

Maybe if we had done that Shawn Lauvao might not have made the team and we wouldn't have had to out on the street for the third year in a row.

    Someday we will learn.

But we don't seem to learn fast

Waaaaaay too soon to think Cooper is anything more than what we thought he was, and what he has been to date in the NFL - which is a total journeyman. He certainly exceeded expectations against the Bucs - but let's not kid ourselves regarding what the expectations were either. That was not exactly a 'high bar' ..lol...

Yeah - Apke seemed like one of those picks where we were anticipating other teams would view him as a steal at that spot down the road. Still possible but pretty raw and clearly drafted for physical ability vs. demonstrated ability to play.

On the other hand, if the team needs to learn, so do fans. We should know better than to write guys completely off before they've even played a full season.

    2 things.
    He's a 4th round pick.
And - We're just halfway into his rookie season.

Maybe too soon to pass final judgment on a guy who is supposed to take longer to develop, than a 3rd or higher ?

We spent a 3rd round pick on simply a backup lineman. So why would it be a reach to spend a 4th on someone who is expected to be 2 things - an immediate ST impact - AND with proper coaching, could be a force in the secondary. Speed is under-rated. A LOT of teams are focusing on building speed on their defense. Some of them, speed is #1 motivator in building it.
In addition, speed has positive ripple effects other than that one benefit - for example, if he has a flaw that puts him out of position on some plays, his speed can make up for it. Speed covers a multitude of sins.
Didn't Darrell Green rely on his speed along, to a very large degree, as opposed to his cover skills ?
Another thing, the fact that he's injured right now, and not on the field, could be masking the fact that he's developing quite well, and we just can't see it right now.

Well, we do have an improved ST, however...we were decimated along the line last year, we should have invested more along the OL. Lavaou was a very poor investment.

My problem with Apke is that he didn't really have a position.

We went down this road a couple of rounds earlier in 2016 with a #2 pick of Su'a Cravens. Was he a nickel linebacker? Safety? Hybrid?

To me Round 4 is a bit early to be taking 'flyers' on guys in hopes by swinging for the fences we come up with a steal.

We see #3 and #4 picks come into the NFL and a number of them start their first or second year at positions they have played 2-3 years in college.

As far as being too effusive of praise for Jonathan Cooper, nothing further can be from the truth.

Last year Pro Football Focus had Lauvao rated as one of the worst starting guards in the NFL.

So, to me it's not a matter of finding a guy in Cooper that we can count on for the next 3-5 years to be a starter for us, but rather being at LEAST if not BETTER a player than Lauvao AND perhaps being a guy that can be a bit HEALTHIER as well

Brian Mitchell mentioned the same phenomenon on WTEM 980 this week in regards to the running backs.

As with Lauvao, the Redskins continue to make a place for Samaje Perine on the 53 man roster and yet he is inactive each week even when we have almost all of our backs injured.

Guice is gone, Marshall is on IR, Thompson has ribs, Kelley is on IR, Peterson has a shoulder and Bibbs himself got dinged a couple of weeks ago.

Yet, we don't see Perine step in and get any reps in the backfield as a rusher or a pass receiver.

So, why is he here? He doesn't contribute on special teams.

Another mystery. Again, Mitchell went back to the team not wanting to admit they made a draft mistake on him.

These are the inefficiencies in roster construction and management that seem to keep biting us - we have certain numbers at each position but for some reason when injuries hit there are certain guys we never seem to play or if we do they play poorly and go back to the bench but never seem to get moved off the roster.

If Perine can't adjust to a pro style offense, make the first guy miss and hold onto the football he isn't an NFL player. Time to move on.

They're keeping Perine on the roster because Adrian Peterson is old and they aren't sure what kind of durability he'll have down the stretch especially as the hits pile up. I don't really see that they have a choice, do they? Bibbs isn't an every down back (I'm not arguing Perine is, but he at least fits that mold if need be).

Burner’s Burning Questions: Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

    Week Ten

Greetings to everyone here in BGO land and greetings to all of our friends on social media. We hope you become a member of the family here.

Our thoughts continue to be focused on those who were in the paths of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. We hope areas affected can get the help and support that is needed, but understand it will take time.

The Redskins produced a gritty performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday and now lead the NFC East by two games. The defense played a game that was reminiscent of one they played on November 17, 1986. The Redskins beat the 49ers 14-6 while Joe Montana threw for 441 yards and limited them to two field goals. Thirty-two years later, the Redskins performed in a similar fashion.

Week ten is in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Are you expecting good grades this week? We will try to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades, evaluations, and questions. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, questions, and opinions.

    Upcoming Dates:
    - Days until the Cowboys game: 8
    - Days until the Eagles game: 19
    - Days until NFL free agency: 119
    - Days until NFL draft: 162

Let’s take a look at week ten.

    Quarterbacks:
Question: How did Alex Smith fare?
Answer: Smith didn’t set the world on fire and missed an easy touchdown to Vernon Davis, but had a nifty pass to Josh Doctson for a score. Another game with zero turnovers.
    Grade: C+

    Running Backs:
Question: Do you have a grade for them?
Answer: It was a good effort and Kapri Bibbs solidified his role as a relief back with some key plays and picking up substantial yardage.
    Grade: B-

    Wide Receivers:
Question: Well, how about the receivers?
Answer: Josh Doctson had another touchdown. No huge mistakes, but they did have issues with getting open and creating separation. Maurice Harris continues his coming out party.
    Grade: C

    Tight Ends:
Question: What grade do give them?
Answer: A good day from Jordan Reed with timely catches for several first downs. Vernon Davis was wide open for a touchdown, but a bad pass thwarted the opportunity.
    Grade: B

    Offensive Line:
Question: How would you rate them?
Answer: Compared to the previous game, this unit was really good. Ty Nsekhe played well. Jonathan Cooper was incredible for having practiced only two days in a new systems – two holding calls hurt his standing, but he played well overall.
    Grade: B

    Defensive Line:
Question: What grade would you give their effort against the Bucs?
Answer: “Needs Improvement” would be a nice way to say it. 501 yards allowed is not good, but they did not allow a touchdown and played spectacularly in the red zone.
    Grade: C+

    Linebackers:
Question: How did this group fare against the Bucs?
Answer: This is a recording: “Needs Improvement” would be a nice way to say it. 501 yards allowed is not good, but they did not allow a touchdown and played spectacularly in the red zone.
    Grade: F

    Cornerbacks:
    Question: How about the corners?
Answer: See the previous two answers. And Josh Norman had a key interception.
    Grade: B-

    Safeties:
Question: How did the new safety, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix look this time around?
Answer: He looked much better on Sunday. He should be fully up to date by this weekend.
    Grade: B

    Special Teams:
    Question: How about this unit?
Answer: Tress Way is absolutely incredible. Dustin Hopkins was on target. Few opportunities existed for the return units, but they had no mistakes.
    Grade: A+

    Coaching:
Question: What can we say about the coaches for this game?
    Answer:
Offense. Not overpowering and missed a few opportunities, especially on a long pass to Vernon Davis, but the offense was steady and produced when needed.

Defense. Giving up 501 yards is not a good thing, but the defense was rock solid in the red zone. Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix is looking like he could be comfortable in this defense very soon.

Special teams. Another great game from this unit.
    Grade: B-

The Redskins hold a lead of two games in the NFC East. The next division game will not occur until Thanksgiving – next week. How would you rate the impact of Matt Ioannidis? Were you encouraged with the improvement from Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix? Is Maurice Harris ready to become a regular in the lineup? Are you impressed with Jonathan Cooper? Can the Redskins continue to stay in first place and build on their lead in the NFC East? How would you rate this game against the Bucs?

We’ll see you again next week. On to week eleven and the Texans game.

    Hail To The Redskins!

Answer : Not surprisingly, Burgundy Burner shows us his consistency week in and week out, with yet another great performance. He posted a rate of 100% accuracy of his player and coach evaluation, with pinpoint precision on player performance. His ER (Evaluator Rating) was calculated to 152.3, using the UFEFG (Universal Football Evaluator Formula Guidelines), which is the highest ER rating possible. We love his aggression, when it comes to being brutally honest in evaluation, even if the truth and facts hurt.
