REDSKINS EXERCISE FIFTH-YEAR OPTION ON G BRANDON SCHERFF, RE-SIGN OL TONY BERGSTROM

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have exercised their fifth-year option on the contract of guard Brandon Scherff and re-signed offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom.

Scherff (6-5, 319) entered the league as the Redskins' first-round selection (No. 5 overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft. In his first three NFL seasons, Scherff has started every game in which he's appeared, including 46 regular season games and one postseason contest.

Scherff earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections during the 2016-17 seasons after collecting PFWA All-Rookie honors during the Redskins' division-winning campaign in 2015. He became the first Redskins interior lineman to earn multiple Pro Bowl selections since Pro Football Hall of Fame guard Russ Grimm's streak of four consecutive Pro Bowl honors from 1983-86, and he also became the first Redskins offensive lineman to earn multiple Pro Bowl selections within the first three seasons of an NFL career since Chris Samuels in 2001-02.

Scherff played collegiately at Iowa, where he appeared in 43 games with 36 starts. As a senior, he earned unanimous consensus All-American honors in addition to receiving the Outland Trophy, awarded annually to the best interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America.

Scherff, 26, attended Denison (Iowa) H.S., where he played offensive and defensive lineman in his final two seasons after playing quarterback as a sophomore. A multi-sport athlete, he also participated in baseball, basketball, tennis and track and field. He was born Dec. 26, 1991.

Bergstrom (6-5, 315) originally entered the NFL as a third-round selection of the Oakland Raiders (No. 95 overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 53 regular season games with seven starts in a career that includes stints with the Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins.

Last season, Bergstrom played in 13 games and matched his career high with three starts. He appeared in four games with the Ravens in Weeks 1-7 before joining the Redskins on Oct. 25 and playing in nine games with three starts at center for Washington.

Bergstrom played collegiately at Utah, appearing in 48 games with 39 starts at right tackle during his four-year career. He earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a senior in 2011.

Bergstrom, 31, attended Skyline H.S. in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he earned All-State honors as a senior in 2004. He was born Aug. 6, 1986.

Hopefully the team doesn't wait too long to get Brandon signed to an extension.

McCloughan's first draft pick with the team was also his best. It's been downhill after that for the most part.

Bergstrom? Looks like camp fodder. Ironic that at his size and having played tackle in college that he looked to be overwhelmed when taking some reps at guard. At 31, I don't see a lot of upside.

$12.5M Exercised option is a huge incentive for the Skins to work out an extension for him. Bergstrom - don't know what his contract is but probably vet min (like $790k) and cap hit about $630k. Doesn't mean he makes the team but pretty cheap to keep around depending on the draft or how camp shakes out.

Best move this offseason.

Great news but as others have said, need to get him signed up on an extension ASAP

I breathed a sigh of relief when Scherff found his spot to contribute at RG heading into the 2015 season.

We drafted him and planned on moving him from left tackle in college to right tackle in the NFL, but the early returns on him playing tackle were so dire from guys like Doc Walker in that first offseason that I was really concerned we had a bust on our hands.
