Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ. The Redskins haven’t made a lot of noise during the first few weeks of 2018 other than minor roster changes and a coaching change (strength coach position). Free agency, the draft, and training camp will be here before you know it. This is our third free agency update for the 2018 offseason. It’s very early in this process and we really don’t know how all of it will unfold. As we get closer to free agency, things will be somewhat clearer. Will Kirk Cousins sign a new long term deal? Will he be tagged with the franchise or transition tender? Is the team going to let him walk? Those are the biggest questions to be answered in the coming weeks.

Who will we target in free agency? Who will we re-sign? Who will we not re-sign? Who will get released? Feel free to offer your opinions and predictions.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days, weeks and months.

    Free Agents Obtained:

    Free Agents Re-signed:
Quinton Dunbar, CB/ST – (Signed Three Year Deal, 1/1/18)

    Restricted Free Agents:
Quinton Dunbar, CB/ST – (Signed Three Year Deal, 1/1/18)
Ty Nsehke, OT – (Very Likely Tendered)
Deshazor Everett, SS/ST – (Very Likely Tendered)

    Exclusive Rights Free Agents:
    Dare Ogunbowale, RB – (Unknown)
Tyler Catalina, OG – (Very Likely Tendered)

    Contract Extension:

    Pending Free Agents:
Kirk Cousins, QB – (Biggest Question Mark Of All)
    Terrelle Pryor, WR – (Unknown)
Shawn Lauvao, OG – (Very Likely Walks)
    Niles Paul, TE/ST – (Unknown)
    Spencer Long, OG/C – (Unknown)
Ryan Grant, WR – (Probably Re-signs)
Mason Foster, ILB – (Possibly Re-signs)
DeAngelo Hall, FS – (Very Likely Retires)
Arthur Jones, DT – (Probably Walks)
Zach Brown, ILB – (Possibly Re-signs)
Bashaud Breeland, CB – (Very Likely Walks)
    Will Compton, ILB – (Unknown)
    Trent Murphy, OLB – (Unknown)
Junior Galette, OLB – (Very Likely Walks)
    Chris Carter, LB/ST – (Unknown)
Tony Bergstrom, C – (Very Likely Walks)
    Brian Quick, WR – (Unknown)
Zach Vigil, ILB – (Possibly Re-signs)
    Phil Taylor, DT – (Unknown)
    Dustin Hopkins, K – (Very Likely Re-signs)

    Possible Release Candidates:
Keith Marshall, RB – (Cap Savings, $33K – Dead Cap, $538.6K)
Byron Marshall, RB – (Cap Savings, $630K – Dead Cap, $0)
Jordan Reed, TE – (Cap Savings, $5.2M – Dead Cap, $5.4M)
    T.J. Clemmings, OT – (Cap Savings, $705K – Dead Cap, $0)
Arie Kouandjio, OG – (Cap Savings, $705K – Dead Cap, $0)
    Demetrius Rhaney, C – (Cap Savings, $705K – Dead Cap, $0)
    A.J. Francis, DE – (Cap Savings, $705K – Dead Cap, $0)
    Su’a Cravens, SS – (Cap Savings, $1.36M – Dead Cap, $1.7M)

    Offseason Updates:
As you know we ended the process of listing free agents from other teams, but this offseason is full of unpredictability. We will list some players of interest this year, but it won’t be a comprehensive list and there is no way we can sign all of them.

    Case Keenum, QB
    Teddy Bridgewater, QB
    Alex Smith, QB
    Carlos Hyde, RB
    Isaiah Crowell, RB
    Paul Richardson, WR
    Donte Moncrief, WR
    Brice Butler, WR
    Trey Burton, TE
    Justin Pugh, OT/OG
    Greg Robinson, OT/OG
    Zach Fulton, OG
    Luke Joeckel, OG
    Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB
    Barkevious Mingo, OLB
    Dee Ford, OLB
    Demario Davis, ILB
    Sheldon Richardson, DE
    Brent Urban, DE
    DaQuan Jones, DT
    Daniel McCullers, DT
    Benny Logan, DE/DT
    Beau Allen, DT
    Star Lotulelei, DT
    Kyle Fuller, CB

This list will grow, shrink, and change quite a bit. Feel free to produce a list of your own – we look forward to it.

Kapri Bibbs signed a two year contract late in the 2017 season. He will be an UFA in 2019. BBQ had inaccurate information in recent free agency updates and regrets the error.

Former Redskins fullback Darrel Young says that there is a growing rift between Jay Gruden and Kirk Cousins. Young believes the rift is too great to repair. BBQ thinks this is true, but plenty of money can heal all wounds.

So much uncertainty surrounds what the Redskins will do in the Kirk Cousins saga, but Jay Gruden has now gone on record saying that he no longer wants one year (tags of any kind) deals.

DC sports media guru Ben Standig has Georgia ILB Roquan Smith mocked to the Redskins in round one.

Redskins legend Joe Jacoby is among the finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Inductees will be announced Super Bowl weekend.

Another DC sports media member, Chris Russell, said that the Redskins should’ve given Cousins a transition tag after the 2016 season and likely could’ve matched any offer from other teams. BBQ fully agrees.

Nick Sundberg is in the running for the Walter Payton Man of the Year in the NFL. He is hoping to win and use the cash reward toward public schools.

Redskins media seems to be evenly divided on whether Kirk stays or goes. Radio 106.7 in DC thinks a long term deal gets done and NBCS Washington thinks otherwise. BBQ tends to agree with the latter (Rich Tandler, JP Finlay, Brian Mitchell, Chick Hernandez).

    Personal Thoughts:
The offseason blog for BBQ is now known as “Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions”. We feel it is a better representation of what is provided in the offseason blog. If you have a better name, then please let our executive secretary or lawyers know.

BBQ is leaning toward the idea that Kirk Cousins has played his last game in a Redskins uniform. We also believe that we will target several free agent quarterbacks with the ultimate goal of signing Case Keenum or Teddy Bridgewater.

See you as we go along.

    Hail To The Redskins!

For anybody - which 2018 draft eligible college QB's are basically Andrew Luck, in that they're considered Plug 'N Play, and NFL Ready ?
Not meaning that they'd take the league by storm immediately, but that they don't need more than a year, to make major adustments from a college-style offense, to NFL-style ?

I don't think any of them change a team in their rook season.. I've heard rumblings that Allen and Rosen are probably the most 'pro-ready' but if they hit things perfectly, I believe they go the route of Carson Wentz where they aren't truly starting caliber til at least year 2. Not saying they are wentz, just that year 1 is probably going to be a process....

I heard Dallas may go after Breeland.
I hope we at least make him an offer, and only let him walk if he practically wants Cousins Money.
I'm not totally sold on Dunbar being a better #2 than Bree.

I'd imagine Dunbar would be the 3 and Fuller would be the 2... I'm actually in the camp of trying to keep him as well.. I think Fuller is well suited to be a no. 3, and would also be a bit concerned about the other side... granted toward the end of the year i had my concerns about Norman too so who knows.

I think that Dunbar or someone not currently on the roster would be #2 and that Fuller will remain in the slot.

Fuller has been so good in the slot, I'd hate to move him. If Breeland can be had for a good price, we'd be better off keeping him. If not, then Dunbar or Moreau need to nail down the position, so we don't have to move Fuller, and then have to train a new guy in the slot.

Then, either Nicholson or PlayerToBeNamed nail down the other safety spot next to Swearinger, and we have a good secondary that could be together for a while.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.

Today we bring you the third round of mocks of the 2018 offseason. We’ve already signed one of our restricted free agents (Quinton Dunbar) to a three year contract, but today’s focus is squarely on college prospects. We have two mocks for you today and that will be a weekly feature at BBQ for the next few weeks. One mock features the idea of keeping Kirk Cousins and the second mock will be devoted to a scenario of not retaining him.

We will continue this format until we know the status of Kirk Cousins. It’s very complicated, but we hope to know more in the coming weeks.

The format for the mocks this offseason will feature shorter descriptions this year of each player. Time constraints from the fall and early winter have forced us to cram a lot of research into a smaller period of time.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mocks of 2018.

    Team Needs:
    Quarterback (?)
    Running Back
    Wide Receiver
    Tight End (?)
    Left Guard (?)
    Defensive Tackle
    Inside Linebacker
    Strike Safety
    Free Safety

    Mock One: Kirk Cousins Returns

Round One: Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Assuming Zach Brown returns, this pairing would make for one of the best ILB combos in the league.
    Other Possible Targets:
    Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M
    Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame
    Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
    Minkah Fitzpatrick, FS, Alabama
    Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
    Courtland Sutton, WR, Southern Methodist
    Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
The Redskins can’t continue to rely on mid round prospects at running back.
    Other Possible Targets:
    Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
    Maurice Hurst, DE, Michigan
    Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
    Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
    Vita Vea, DT, Washington
    Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
    DeShon Elliott, FS, Texas

Round Three: Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
Jim Tomsula wants a big and powerful body in the middle of his defensive line and gets his wish.
    Other Possible Targets:
    Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest
    Marcus Allen, FS, Penn St.
    Frank Ragnow, G/C, Arkansas
    Malik Jefferson, ILB, Texas
    Andrew Brown, DE, Virginia
    James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.

Round Four: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.
Jordan Reed could be released by the Redskins or traded in the offseason.
    Other Possible Targets:
Justin Jones, DT, North Carolina St.
    Luke Falk, QB, Washington St.
    Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota St.
    Harrison Phillips, DE, Stanford
    Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma St.

Round Five: Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia
Su’a Cravens is a good strike, but is not likely to return. White could be even better in the same role.
    Other Possible Targets:
    Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
    Jaylen Dunlap, CB, Illinois
    Cam Serigne, TE, Wake Forest
    Marcus Baugh, TE, Ohio St.
    Wyatt Teller, OG, Virginia Tech
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.

Round Six: K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami
Having depth and a great deal of flexibility along the offensive line helps the Hurricanes prospect.
    Other Possible Targets:
    Allen Lazard, WR, Iowa St.
    Breeland Speaks, DE, Mississippi
    Steve Ishmael, WR, Syracuse
    Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia
    Jack Cichy, ILB, Wisconsin
    Ian Thomas, TE, Indiana

Round Seven: Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.
Coming from a lesser known program and conference, Wieneke actually has excellent skills and is an underrated prospect.
    Other Possible Targets:
    Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
    Folorunso Fatukasi, DE, Connecticut
    Brendan Mahon, G/OT, Penn St.
    Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky
    Matt Elam, DT, Kentucky
    Coleman Shelton, OG/C, Washington

Round Seven: Folorunso Fatukasi, DE, Connecticut
A late round prospect who was a defensive tackle for the Huskies, but would be an end at the next level.

Mock Two: Kirk Cousins Does Not Return
In this second mock, we go with the possibility that the Redskins were able to add a quarterback in free agency and will not draft one in the early rounds.

    Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down in round one as the Bills offer both of their first round picks and a fifth rounder.

Round One: Courtland Sutton, WR, Southern Methodist
The new quarterback would like to have plenty of targets and Sutton would be a solid addition.

Round One: Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Jim Tomsula wants a big and powerful body in the middle of his defensive line and gets his wish. Although, taking Vea here is a bit of a reach, doing so in the latter part of round one fills a huge need.

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California

Round Three: Malik Jefferson, ILB, Texas
A talented athlete who will likely move to the inside after playing OLB for the Longhorns.

Round Four: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.

Round Five: Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia

Round Five: Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
Ferguson is a talented passer who would have the benefit of learning from a veteran.

Round Six: K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami

Round Seven: Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.

Round Seven: Folorunso Fatukasi, DE, Connecticut

There are your third round of mocks for 2018. The draft will be here before you know it, but we have many mocks in the weeks and months ahead. See you as we go along.

    Hail To The Redskins!

100% agree.. I'd almost be willing to spend a little more just to keep Bree, I'm not payin him crazy money, but to keep Norman / Bree / Fuller as the DBs i think would be a good investment... especially with Norman going into the 2nd half of his contract, with little belief that he'd accept a 'modest' level extension.

Ok if Quenton Nelson is off the board and the run on top 4-5 qb’s has happened, I’m really liking the idea of Vel Vita!

Imagine a healthy rotation of......J. Allen - Leonidas - Vel Vita
Could spell some mismatches in our favor
