Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you will have a great week. Hello to everyone on social media. We'd love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

The draft is history. Free Agency has all but dwindled down for now. OTAs and mini-camps are just around the corner. Training camp will be here soon. We'll cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the wide receivers and later this week it will be the tight ends. We'll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

Let's get right to it!

Wide Receivers:
Paul Richardson
The Redskins took one large splash in free agency and acquired Richardson. He has speed and is a solid receiver. He will be the deep threat that the team lacked last year.

Quarterback Alex Smith has his deep threat in Richardson, but the free agent signee is also a dependable intermediate route runner. Richardson will be a reliable starter. BBQ believes he could have sixty receptions or more.

Josh Doctson
Doctson begins what is essentially his second season after posting respectable numbers in 2017. He lost the vast majority of his rookie season to injury in 2016. Smith and Doctson could establish a good rapport on the field.

Look for his numbers to increase this season and to have a greater overall impact. BBQ thinks he will have fifty-five receptions or more and at least eight touchdowns.

Jamison Crowder
Crowder actually had a decent season catching the ball, but the troubles he had as a punt returner were unfortunate. Look for him to have a good 2018 as a receiver and his role as a returner should diminish. Could be a good go to receiver in the slot for Smith.

Crowder probably has the best chance of improving on his numbers from a year ago than any other receiver. BBQ thinks he will have more than seventy-five receptions.

Brian Quick
Quick started to play well late in the season. Look for him to have twenty or more catches in 2018.

Maurice Harris
Harris finally does enough to make the opening day roster. BBQ thinks he will have fifteen or more receptions this season.

Trey Quinn
Quinn will need to make the roster on special teams and as a receiver, but it would be difficult to keep him off of the final fifty-three.

Other Receivers
Simmie Cobbs and Robert Davis will be candidates for the practice squad. Darvin Kidsy, Shay Fields, De'Mornay Pierson-El, and Cam Sims are longshots to make the roster and practice squad.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Later this week we will look at the tight ends.

Have a good week.

Hail To The Redskins!

We picked the bargain basement option in Scandrick to provide the veteran insurance.

If everyone stays healthy we may be OK for 2018, but if we were to lose Norman and/or Dunbar this unit could be toast because again my feeling is that Scandrick doesn't have much left in the tank.

We won't chase after Kendricks. Thinking he will go to the Colts.

There is still a chance we bring back Junior Galette at a vet minimum.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope it has been a great week and hope you will have a pleasant holiday weekend. Please set aside some time to remember the fallen of our military in the United States on Monday. Memorial Day is a time to remember the sacrifices that many have made for our freedoms.

Hello to everyone on social media. We'd love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

The draft is history. Free Agency has all but dwindled down for now. OTAs and mini-camps are ongoing. Training camp will be here soon. We'll cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the tight ends and next week it will be the guards and tackles. We'll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

Let's get right to it!

Tight Ends:
Jordan Reed
Questions galore. Can he stay healthy? Will he put up big numbers, if healthy? What kind of rapport can he establish with Alex Smith? Is this his last year in a Redskins uniform? Reed is the undisputed starter for now.

There is no way to know the answer to these questions at this juncture. The hope is that Reed can regain his form and stay injury free. If he remains healthy, look for Reed to have fifty catches or more and at least five touchdowns.

Vernon Davis
Davis has become Mr. Reliable over the last couple of seasons and now he looks to re-establish a rapport with Alex Smith. Davis produced great numbers with Smith in San Francisco and would like to do the same once again.

Davis will be the backup to Reed, but he will still see a fair amount of time. His knack for picking up huge chunks of yardage should continue. Davis could catch forty or more passes in 2018 and have four or more touchdowns.

Jeremy Sprinkle
Sprinkle will be on the roster of fifty-three. He will continue to learn and gain experience as a blocker, but could see some meaningful receptions as well. 2018 could be a stepping stone to greater success in the future.

BBQ expects Sprinkle to have fifteen or more receptions and two or three touchdowns this season.

Other Tight Ends
Manasseh Garner and Matt Flanagan will not make the final roster cuts, but one of them could end up on the practice squad. If the Redskins are looking for a receiving tight end, it will be Garner. If the team is looking for a blocking tight end, it could be Flanagan.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Next week we will look at the offensive line.

Have a good weekend.

Hail To The Redskins!

Other Tight Ends

I was really puzzled last season that Sprinkle didn't get more opportunities - really puzzled. He appears to have physical gifts that rival Reed's. If Reed were durable, he could literally be the greatest pass catching TE in NFL history. We all know about the 'if' ... There's no reason to believe that Reed is suddenly going to exhibit toughness and the ability to play through injury. Frankly, I'm tired of starting sentences about him with 'when healthy'. The safe bet is that he will not be.

We really need to get Sprinkle out there and find out what we have in him in 2018. I love me some Vernon, and I have no doubt we'll get some production from him (he may be the impact TE in 2018, not Reed). But with 12 seasons and 180 NFL games under his belt, he's finishing up his career. We need to find Reed's replacement. It's either Sprinkle or we need to draft a top tier TE in 2018.

I'm basing my analysis of Sprinkle on pure speculation. I don't know anything specific or have any unique insights, but his brief body of work in late 2017 was positive, imo. Reed going down by injury is very likely and Sprinkle will certainly have his chance.

Getting five good games out of Reed will honestly be a bonus. Three or less would not be surprising. At least he didn't wait to get toe surgery until mid summer. Getting the surgery in winter was the right thing to do.

If somehow, someway, Reed is able to healthy all season, it will be huge to the success of the offense in 2018.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the guards/center and later this week it will be the tackles. We'll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

Let's get right to it!

Left Guard:
Shawn Lauvao
The new left guard is the same as the old left guard. Shawn Lauvao is the starter for now, but he could be challenged by a group of average guards. He is good in the running game, but struggles in pass protection.

Lauvao is the starter until proven otherwise. His injury history is something to consider and the Redskins need to have the backups ready.

Right Guard:
Brandon Scherff
Scherff is the undisputed starter and one of the best guards in the league. Look for Scherff to get a new contract next off-season. His play has been nothing but stellar from day one.

Nothing can displace Scherff at right guard other than an injury. He should be able to score a third contract from the Redskins in another few years.

Tyler Catalina
Catalina has the size and bulk to play either guard position, but lacks the overall experience. For now, he is the backup swing guard and he could be pressed into service much sooner than expected.

Catalina needs to take several steps forward this off-season. There is a reasonable chance he will be needed at left guard, especially if Shawn Lauvao goes down with an injury – a possibility that is very realistic.

Kyle Kalis
Kyle Kalis needs to prove he belongs. He is a backup now and due to lack of depth, he is likely assured place on the final roster of fifty-three. Or is he? Kalis needs to add about fifteen pounds of bulk.

Other Guards
The Redskins have only one other guard in addition to the ones already mentioned. Could another free agent guard be added before or during training camp? BBQ thinks this is a real possibility.

Isaiah Williams was signed recently, but he is not a candidate for the roster or practice squad.

Center:
Chase Roullier
Roullier proved that he is up to the task in his rookie season and will be the starter in 2018. He had a quick learning curve and was able to gain the confidence of coaches and players along the offensive line.

Roullier proved that he could call out blocking assignments at the line of scrimmage and play effectively. Roullier should be able to establish a good rapport with Alex Smith.

Tony Bergstrom
Early in the off-season, Bergstrom was listed as a guard and in recent weeks he was listed as a center. The Redskins lost last year's original starting center to free agency and there was a need for experience at the center position.

Bergstrom provides that veteran presence and stability as a quality backup.

Other Centers
Demetrius Rhaney is a second year center who will likely be cut before the season and he is not eligible for the practice squad.

UDFA Casey Dunn will not be on the roster of fifty-three, but he does have long term potential. Look for him to be on the practice squad in 2018 and have a reasonable chance to make the roster in 2019.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Later this week we will look at the tackles.

Have a great week.

Another position evaluation coming shortly. It was meant to be posted on Friday, but I spent much of last week and part of the weekend in the hospital. The evaluation of the tackles will look like it was written for late last week and I don't have time to correct it.

Evals for DEs and DTs coming Thursday and Friday.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the tackles and next week it will be the defensive line. We'll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

Let's get right to it!

Left Tackle:
Trent Williams
The Redskins have had great success at left tackle for nearly forty years. Joe Jacoby. Jim Lachey. Chris Samuels. The legacy continues with Trent Williams.

Williams is the starter. Any questions? We didn't think so.

Right Tackle:
Morgan Moses
Moses had a rough first year, but he settled in quickly and has been one of the best right tackles in the NFL ever since. His position on the right side is cemented.

Look for Moses to bounce back from injuries and have another good season. He could be a candidate for the Pro Bowl.

Ty Nsekhe
Ty has the overwhelming size and bulk to play either tackle position. For now, he is the backup swing tackle and could be pressed into service if injuries occur to Williams or Moses.

There had been talk of moving big Ty to guard, but that is not likely. His presence and effectiveness as the swing tackle has been helpful to the Redskins in recent years. His role should remain the same.

Geron Christian
Geron Christian will eventually fill the role that Ty Nsekhe does as the swing tackle. He will be on the roster of fifty-three, but will likely be a healthy scratch for most games unless there are injuries to any of the aforementioned players.

Christian will likely be the backup swing tackle in 2019 and could be a starter within a few years.

Other Tackles
T.J. Clemmings, Cameron Jefferson, John Kling, Alex Balducci, and Timon Parris are all fighting for a roster position. Clemmings, Jefferson, and Balducci are facing long odds.

Kling and Parris are prime candidates for the practice squad.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Next week we will look at the defensive ends and defensive tackles.

Have a great week.

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you have had a good week. Hello to everyone on social media. We'd love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on winning the Stanley Cup. Let's hope the Redskins aren't far behind with a Super Bowl trophy.

OTAs and mini-camps are ongoing. Training camp will be here soon. We'll cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the defensive ends and shortly we will look at the defensive tackles. We'll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

Let's get right to it!

Defensive Ends:
Jonathan Allen
Jonathan Allen was off to a great start as a rookie, but a lisfranc injury ended his season. Look for him to have a superb 2018 with a defensive line that was significantly upgraded recently.

Allen could put up very good numbers and may have an outside chance of being selected to the pro bowl.

Daron Payne
Payne was the first round selection in this year's draft and he could have a solid rookie season. Look for him to be an opening day starter opposite from Allen.

Payne could play inside on occasion and will also provide a good pass rush at times.

Ziggy Hood
Hood is very underrated and with the new additions at tackle, he can move back to the end. That is where he is most effective. He did a respectable job at tackle and could be used sparingly there at times.

Anthony Lanier
Lanier was thought to be nothing more than a fringe roster addition or even a practice squad member at the beginning of the 2017 season. Injuries forced him into a greater role.

Look for Lanier to have a backup role this season and to have a decent impact when giving starters a rest.

Other Defensive Ends
Tavaris Barnes is unlikely to make the team.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. In a couple of hours we will look at the defensive tackles.

Have a great weekend.

Hail To The Redskins!

Defensive Tackles:
Matt Ioannidis
If you thought Ioannidis made a huge improvement from his first year to the second, just watch his third year in the league. He is poised to breakout in 2018 as more talent and help has been added to the line.

Stacy McGee
McGee is a solid player in the running defense, but offers little to nothing as a pass rusher. He will be the backup to Ioannidis and could see more time when the team is in 4-3 alignments.

Phil Taylor
It might be a surprise to see him listed this high, but if Taylor can stay healthy, his impact as a backup could be huge for the Redskins.

Staying healthy will be the key. This is likely his last chance in the league.

Tim Settle
Settle will have a lot to learn in his rookie season and could move up the charts with a good training camp or if the injury bug continues to plague Taylor.

Settle could be a healthy scratch on game days and may need his rookie season as a time to learn. Look for him to have more of an impact in 2019.

Other Defensive Tackles
Ondre Pipkins is likely to spend another year on the practice squad.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Next week we will look at inside and outside linebackers.

What about the Alabama boys?

Not sure where Anthony Lanier lined up most of the time but he seems like a decent pass rusher. 5 sacks and a forced fumble ain't too bad for a reserve guy.

So is Payne or Allen meant to be the true NT?
