Letting Breeland walk for the type of money he signed for in Carolina is very telling. I think it eludes to a few things...
a) We're pretty confident in the ability of Dunbar to play opposite Norman on a week to week basis.
b) We think that Moreau could eventually blossom into the type of player Fuller was with a season or two of grooming and more playing time.
c) Internally, the organization is high on Norman's ability to still play at a high level.
c) Ultimately, I think it suggests that we really didn't like Breeland and the inconsistencies in his game (he just doesn't strike me as being a winner).
I'd personally like to see DRC brought in on a short term deal. It could help bridge the gap and allow the likes of Holsey and Moreau to grow into their positions to a point where they can make solid contributions down the road.
Much like the receiving corps, I think our defensive backfield could still benefit from some more veteran presence.
Ultimately, if trying to be responsible financially in the defensive backfield means a strong emphasis up front along the defensive line (especially in the early rounds of the draft and possibly one veteran contributor in FA), I'm okay with that. It's been a long time since that's been our approach, but I think it's the right approach if that is in fact what the front office is thinking. Who knows - keeping my fingers crossed.
