Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Today we bring you our latest mock of the 2018 offseason and there are some changes, including a trade. The Redskins are evaluating more prospects each day and the draft is just under three weeks away. BBQ continues to cover the 2018 offseason now with multiple updates each week. Next week we will go to three mocks (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and the frequency will increase as late April approaches.

The format for the mocks this offseason will feature shorter descriptions this year for each player. Time constraints from the fall and early winter have forced us to cram a lot of research into a smaller period of time.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we'd like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the minds of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do.

Without any further delays, let's take a look at the latest mock of 2018.

Team Needs:
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End (?)
Left Guard
Defensive Tackle
Inside Linebacker (?)
Strike or Free Safety (?)

Round One: Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB/SS/FS, Alabama
Last year a special player from Alabama magically dropped to the Redskins in round one. Could it happen again?
Other Possible Targets:
Leighton Vander Esch, OLB, Boise St.
Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Derwin James, FS, Florida St.
Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Harold Landry, OLB, Boston College
Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
Derrius Guice, RB, Louisiana St.

Round Two: Trade
The Redskins trade down to the latter part of round two and pick up a third rounder.

Round Two: Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego St.
The all-purpose running back can fill some major needs and provide stability to the rushing corps.
Other Possible Targets:
Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama
Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
Harrison Phillips, DE/DT, Stanford
Darius Leonard, ILB, South Carolina St.
Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia

Round Three: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.
Guess who will not be ready for OTAs? Or mini-camp? Maybe training camp? Possibly the 2018 season? Guess who may move on from that player?
Other Possible Targets:
R.J. McIntosh, DE/DT, Miami
Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota St.
Malik Jefferson, ILB, Texas
Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest
Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Frank Ragnow, OC/OG, Arkansas
Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia

B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.
Josey Jewell, ILB, Iowa
Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond
Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California

Sean Welsh, G/C, Iowa
Allen Lazard, WR, Iowa St.
Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
Fred Warner, OLB, Brigham Young
Equanimeous St. Brown, WR, Notre Dame

Round Five: Folorunso Fatukasi, DT/DE, Connecticut
A late round prospect who was a defensive tackle for the Huskies, but could also see time at end on the next level.

Round Six: K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami
Having depth and a great deal of flexibility along the offensive line helps the Hurricanes prospect.
Other Possible Targets:
Brad Bozeman, C, Alabama
Dorian O'Daniel, ILB, Clemson
Adonis Alexander, CB, Virginia Tech
Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
Chase Litton, QB, Marshall
Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia

Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky
Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech
Teo Redding, WR, Bowling Green
Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
Darren Carrington, WR, Utah

Hail To The Redskins!

If the Redskins are really interested in Guice and are bringing Billy Price in for a visit, then I think there has to be some thought in the organization to moving down from #1 3 to pick up additional picks.

Both Guice and Price appear to be players that will be available after the #1 3 pick, with Guice perhaps in that 18-24 range and Price late first to second round.

Moving down from #1 3 to #1 8 or #20 in that range could get us back into the third round and still land a blue chip player at a position of need.

It's funny, everyone talks about BPA, but the latest mocks from even those who are former NFL scouts show a team like New England using it's #1 picks on positions of NEED such as OT and CB with the free agent defections.

I don't see anyone posting that New England is going to draft a quarterback in Round 1 or a wide receiver.

Not sure what trade scenarios will unfold, but I think it is safe to say that the Redskins are currently looking at many different trade possibilities.

Currently listening to the Ben Standig/Chris Russell podcast - hoping to learn more.

Some of you may recall that I had Kevin Hogan mocked several times in the sixth round a couple of years ago. He went to another team in the fifth round, but this does show that the Skins had interest.

Hogan does have a couple of quirks that can be corrected by Jay, but he will likely never be a starter. However, the Skins might've found their long term backup after Colt McCoy leaves. The Skins got Hogan for next to nothing - pretty good move here.

Also, this likely ends any pursuit of a QB in the draft. I could see signing an UDFA - a camp fodder arm and practice squad player is a good thing.

He's only signed for one more season so the Redskins are going to have to make a decision on him pretty quickly.

We don't have 3-4 years to let him grown into the system.

He is signed for this coming season and the 2019 season. He is acclimated to the NFL, so no worries there.

He has the entire offseason to learn this offense and the time to spend with Jay, Matt Cavanaugh, and Kevin O'Connell. Plus an additional season.

Team Needs:
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End (?)
Left Guard
Defensive Tackle
Inside Linebacker (?)
Strike or Free Safety (?)

Round One: Da'Ron Payne, DT/DE, Alabama
Payne is the space eating defensive tackle that Jim Tomsula has been coveting since his arrival at Redskins Park, but the Crimson Tide prospect can play all along the line.
Other Possible Targets:
Leighton Vander Esch, OLB, Boise St.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB/SS/FS, Alabama
Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Derwin James, FS, Florida St.
Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Harold Landry, OLB, Boston College
Derrius Guice, RB, Louisiana St.

Round Two: Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Powerful runner. Excellent between the tackles. Difficult to bring down and rarely goes down on the first contact.
Other Possible Targets:
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama
Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego St.
Harrison Phillips, DE/DT, Stanford
Darius Leonard, ILB, South Carolina St.
Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia

Round Four: Braden Smith, OG, Auburn
Overlooked by many pundits, but certainly known to football scouts. Tall frame – will need to add about twenty pounds of bulk. Could start from day one.
Other Possible Targets:
Nathan Shepherd, DT, Fort Hays St.
Dante Pettis, WR, Washington
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.
Wyatt Teller, OG, Virginia Tech
Josey Jewell, ILB, Iowa
Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
Korey Robertson, WR, Southern Mississippi
Dalton Schultz, TE, Stanford
Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia

Round Five: Siran Neal, SS/FS/CB, Jacksonville St.
Neal is a versatile defensive back who could likely step in at the corner slot position immediately.
Other Possible Targets:
Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin
Siran Neal, SS/FS/CB, Jacksonville St.
Micah Kiser, ILB, Virginia
Quenton Meeks, CB, Stanford
Sean Welsh, G/C, Iowa

In a true state of irony, I have read the Redskins ‘have' to draft a top corner because Norman is going to get cut in 2019.

Well, Norman may end up being a cap casualty, but what's wrong with addressing CB in 2019?

We have not had a DL worth a damn for a generation but we have to start filling holes for the future elsewhere first?

I like Payne at #13 . I like James at #13 because they are blue chippers at positions we haven't been able to fill for one reason or another in 20 years.

Exactly. I've also read where many at RP believe Moreau could step up big time this season. We'll see, but there is no need to panic on CB. Plus we have an excellent DB coach. Kendall Fuller improved greatly in his second season and Torrian Gray is thought to be the reason why.

Offseason Updates:
Here are the Su'a Cravens trade details:
A. Redskins get the second of Denver's two fifth round picks (number 163 overall).
B. The Redskins swap fourth round positions with Denver (the lower of Denver's two fourth round picks – number 109 overall, up from 113).
C. The Redskins swap fifth round positions with Denver's remaining fifth rounder (pick number 142, up from 149).
D. The Redskins receive a conditional 2020 sixth round pick if Cravens plays in a playoff game in early 2019 or early 2020.

Here are the picks the Redskins now have (by round) in the 2018 draft:
1, 2, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7.

As it stands now, the Redskins would have four compensatory picks in the 2019 draft – 3rd, 5th, 6th, 6th.

The Redskins now have $17.4M cap room and would have small cap ramifications if Terrell McClain is released as a June 1 candidate. The dead cap would be $3.75M, but could be spread out over two years.

While Johnathan Hankins continues to ponder his future, it is important to note two things. First, the Lions and the Redskins are the only teams that currently have offers on the table. Second, the Lions have far less in cap room at this time.

Hankins has these two offers only, but he is a free agent and any team can swoop in suddenly and sign him.

The new cap for 2018 is $177.2M.

Bruce Allen could be on the hot seat. There is a report that says Dan Snyder is very upset with how the Kirk Cousins situation was handled. The report goes on to say that if the Redskins have a poor or subpar season, Allen will be re-assigned and Eric Schaffer will take over GM duties.

Personal Thoughts:
I don't rule out the possibility of Junior Galette returning to the Redskins. He has very little interest on the open market.

I still believe Bashaud Breeland will not return to the Redskins, but anything is possible. Right?

Alex Smith was the starter in Kansas City when Kevin Hogan was drafted. Smith obviously sees something in Hogan that many of us don't see. We really shouldn't be down on this trade. Stephen Morris was never going to be on the final roster.

With the addition of Hogan, the Redskins can focus on depth and special team players late in the draft and have no need to draft a quarterback.

See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Without any further delays, let's take a look at the latest mock of 2018.

Team Needs:
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End (?)
Left Guard
Defensive Tackle
Inside Linebacker (?)
Strike or Free Safety (?)

Round One: Trade
The Redskins move down to the latter part of round one and gain second, fourth, and seventh round selections.

Round One: Derrius Guice, RB, Louisiana St.
Taking a running back in round one hasn't been the norm for the Redskins in a long time. Then again, the rushing attack has been anemic for too many years.
Other Possible Targets:
Leighton Vander Esch, OLB, Boise St.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB/SS/FS, Alabama
Da'Ron Payne, DT/DE, Alabama
Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Derwin James, FS, Florida St.
Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Harold Landry, OLB, Boston College

Round Two: Will Hernandez, G, Texas-El Paso
The 2018 class for guards is deep and plentiful. Hernandez is huge, strong, powerful, and moves defensive linemen with relative ease.
Other Possible Targets:
Connor Williams, OT/OG, Texas
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama
Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego St.
Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Harrison Phillips, DE/DT, Stanford
Darius Leonard, ILB, South Carolina St.
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia

Round Two: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
The Redskins add a solid corner and Jackson could step into a starting role opposite Josh Norman immediately. Good ballhawking techniques and solid in run support.

Round Four: Nathan Shepherd, DT, Fort Hays St.
Matt Ioannidis turned out to be a huge steal in the fifth round two years ago. Shepherd will turn out to be a huge steal in the fourth round this year.
Other Possible Targets:
Dante Pettis, WR, Washington
Wyatt Teller, OG, Virginia Tech
Quenton Meeks, CB, Stanford
Braden Smith, OG, Auburn
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.
Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia
Josey Jewell, ILB, Iowa
Korey Robertson, WR, Southern Mississippi
Dalton Schultz, TE, Stanford

Round Four: Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
An ultra-versatile edge who knocks down passes often. Can drop back in coverage. Candidate for the hybrid role at strike safety in various packages.

Round Five: Micah Kiser, ILB, Virginia
The Redskins venture down the road and find a good inside linebacker who can also play special teams.
Other Possible Targets:
Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin
Sean Welsh, G/C, Iowa
Da'Shawn Hand, DT, Alabama
Siran Neal, SS/FS/CB, Jacksonville St.
Allen Lazard, WR, Iowa St.
Fred Warner, OLB, Brigham Young
Equanimeous St. Brown, WR, Notre Dame

Round Five: Folorunso Fatukasi, DT/DE, Connecticut
A late round prospect who was a defensive tackle for the Huskies, but could also see time at end on the next level.

Round Six: Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
Gallup was once a highly rated prospect and had a decent college career. Alex Smith would make him better.
Other Possible Targets:
Brad Bozeman, C, Alabama
Oren Burks, ILB, Vanderbilt
Dorian O'Daniel, ILB, Clemson
Adonis Alexander, CB, Virginia Tech
Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia
Bo Scarbrough, RB, Alabama

Round Seven: Darren Carrington, WR, Utah
Carrington has the talent to go higher in the draft, but comes with a couple of off the field issues. He was a model citizen since and could be a risk-high reward player.
Other Possible Targets:
Brendan Mahon, G/OT, Penn St.
Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech
Arden Key, OLB, Louisiana St.
Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
Teo Redding, WR, Bowling Green

Round Seven: Troy Apke, FS, Penn St.
Speed, speed, and more speed. Should be an excellent special teams player. Can come in on passing downs and provide solid coverage.

Round Seven: Taylor Hearn, OG, Clemson
An underrated guard for the Tigers. Hearn will need a year to learn the nuances of being an NFL interior lineman, but could crack the starting lineup in a couple of years. Provides quality depth.

Undrafted Free Agent Prospects:
Andrew Trumbetti, OLB, Notre Dame
Cole Reyes, SS, North Dakota
Jester Weah, WR, Pittsburgh
Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.
Evan Berry, KR/FS, Tennessee
Jordan Thomas, CB, Oklahoma
Coleman Shelton, OG/C, Washington
Donovan Wilson, CB, Texas A&M
Reggie Carter, ILB, Georgia
Eddy Peneiro, K, Florida
Drew Bailey, DE/DT, Louisville
Cody O'Connell, OG, Washington St.
Walter Brady, OLB, Middle Tennessee St.
Jeb Blazevich, TE, Georgia
Bruce Hector, DE/DT, South Florida

There is the latest mock of the 2018 off-season. We will have another mock on Friday and a prospects list update tomorrow. The draft will be here before you know it, but we have many mocks coming in the days ahead. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Unless you are going to get an Elliott or Peterson type back, I don't see value in using a #1 selection at the position.

Look at recent Super Bowl champions and you see guys picked up as free agents, mid-round picks, etc.

The Giants defense was so good in the 2006-2013 period and beat NE twice in the Super Bowl because they almost invariably took a defensive lineman somewhere from #1 -#3 each year. They constantly had talent coming in and allowed them to have solid but unspectacular corners you could win with.

I would rate two-way DL just below QB and LOT in terms of what I would be looking to get early in the draft as a blue chip to build around.

And if there is a skill player other than QB available that rates on the board similarly to the others I look at free safety, outside rush linebacker, and OL.

There are so many bust outs at WR in Round 1 I would be very wary about taking this position.

As with RB, I think you can find TE starting in Round 2.

Hail To The Redskins!

FYI...

There will be huge changes to the mock tomorrow. Studying videos, reading scouting reports, and watching player interviews intensely over the last two weeks has changed some of my thinking. New players will be in the mock tomorrow - both as new draft picks (not too many) and many new possible targets.

did a quick simulation, made one trade in the 2nd with the Ravens to get a 3rd from them.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Today we bring you our latest mock of the 2018 off-season and there are numerous changes. The Redskins are evaluating more prospects each day and the draft is just under two weeks away. BBQ continues to cover the 2018 off-season now with multiple updates each week. Next week we will go to four mocks (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday). The week of the draft will bring a mock each day.

The format for the mocks this off-season will feature shorter descriptions this year for each player.

Round One: Da'Ron Payne, DT/DE, Alabama
Payne is the space-eating defensive tackle that Jim Tomsula has been coveting since his arrival at Redskins Park, but the Crimson Tide prospect can play all along the line.
Other Possible Targets:
Leighton Vander Esch, OLB, Boise St.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB/SS/FS, Alabama
Derrius Guice, RB, Louisiana St.
Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Derwin James, FS, Florida St.
Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Harold Landry, OLB, Boston College

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
The Redskins can't continue to rely on mid-round prospects at running back and this is the year when the Redskins make a firm commitment to the running back corps.
Other Possible Targets (Including Third Round Choices if Acquired):
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama
Will Hernandez, G, Texas-El Paso
Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego St.
Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
Josh Sweat, OLB, Florida St.
Marcus Davenport, OLB, Texas-San Antonio
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Harrison Phillips, DE/DT, Stanford (3rd)
Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota St. (3rd)
Chukwuma Okorafor, OT, Western Michigan (3rd)
Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St. (3rd)
Malik Jefferson, ILB, Texas (3rd)
Duke Ejiofor, DE/OLB, Wake Forest (3rd)
Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia (3rd)
Andrew Brown, DE, Virginia (3rd)

Round Four: Frank Ragnow, OC/OG, Arkansas
Ragnow likely would be slotted at center, but he could be a left guard as well. Solid in rush and pass blocking. Mean, nasty streak.
Other Possible Targets:
Dante Pettis, WR, Washington
Scott Quessenberry, C, UCLA
Nathan Shepherd, DT, Fort Hays St.
Wyatt Teller, OG, Virginia Tech
D.J. Chark, WR, Louisiana St.
Quenton Meeks, CB, Stanford
Braden Smith, OG, Auburn
Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.
Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia
Desmond Harrison, OT, West Georgia

Round Five: Siran Neal, SS/FS/CB, Jacksonville St.
A versatile defensive back who could likely step in at the corner slot position immediately.
Other Possible Targets:
Da'Shawn Hand, DT, Alabama
Folorunso Fatukasi, DT/DE, Connecticut
Korey Robertson, WR, Southern Mississippi
Daurice Fountain, WR, Northern Iowa
Fred Warner, OLB, Brigham Young
R.J. McIntosh, DE/DT, Miami

Round Five: Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
Jim Tomsula wants a big and powerful body in the middle of his defensive line and gets his wish.

Round Six: Cole Madison, OG, Washington St.
The Redskins add depth to the line. Madison will need time to adjust to the NFL, but could be a starter in a year or two.
Other Possible Targets:
Oren Burks, ILB, Vanderbilt
Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
Sean Welsh, G/C, Iowa
David Wells, TE, San Diego St.
Micah Kiser, ILB, Virginia
Akrum Wadley, RB, Iowa
Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin
Bo Scarbrough, RB, Alabama

Round Seven: Auden Tate, WR, Florida St.
Not the fastest receiver out there, but Tate tends to catch what is thrown to him. Good possession receiver. Good red zone target.
Other Possible Targets:
Deon Yelder, TE, Western Kentucky
Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech
Taylor Hearn, OG, Clemson
Tre Flowers, S, Oklahoma State
Darren Carrington, WR, Utah
Kentavius Street, DL, NC State
Arden Key, OLB, Louisiana St.
Brad Bozeman, C, Alabama
Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia

Round Seven: Troy Apke, FS, Penn St.
Speed, speed, and more speed. Should be an excellent special teams player. Can come in on passing downs and provide solid coverage.

Undrafted Free Agent Prospects:
Andrew Trumbetti, OLB, Notre Dame
Jester Weah, WR, Pittsburgh
Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.
Evan Berry, KR/FS, Tennessee
Austin Golson, C, Auburn
Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
Lowell Lotulelei, DT, Utah
Jordan Thomas, CB, Oklahoma
Teo Redding, WR, Bowling Green
Mike Love, DE/OLB, South Florida
Dorian O'Daniel, ILB, Clemson
Coleman Shelton, OG/C, Washington
Rashard Fant, CB, Indiana
Ito Smith, RB, Southern Mississippi
Nick Keizer, TE, Grand Valley St.
Quadree Henderson, WR, Pittsburgh
Eddy Peneiro, K, Florida
K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami
Drew Bailey, DE/DT, Louisville
Chase Litton, QB, Marshall
Robert Torgerson, DE, Southern Utah
Cody O'Connell, OG, Washington St.
Jeb Blazevich, TE, Georgia

There is the latest mock of the 2018 off-season. Next week we will have four mocks, a free agency update, and a new prospects list. The draft will be here before you know it, but we have many mocks coming in the days ahead. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Dez Bryant to DC?

He's now a free agent that won't count in the comp pick formula for 2019.

Bruce loves him some ex-Cowboys in Jason Hatcher and Orlando Scandrick.

Just sayin' 🤡🤡🤡🤡

I don't think Bruce or Dan is this desperate and it is highly unlikely that it happens. Hankins is still on the radar and that is a much more pressing need.
