Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Think Gruden is going to be smiling introducing another guard at Redskins Park?

The problem for the Redskins is we DO tend to draft linemen well in the early rounds (when it happens) while our record with skill players early is pretty poor.

Trent Williams in 2010, Ryan Kerrigan in 2011, Brandon Scherff in 2015, Jonathan Allen in 2017.

Those are all HITS. And we didn't have picks in 2013 and 2014 due to the trade up with the Rams in 2012.

We also found Morgan Moses, Spencer Long and Matt Ioannidis with #3/#5 picks.

Which brings us to the question of skill players.

We traded a King's ransom to move up and take Robert Griffin. At 28 he is out of the NFL.

We drafted David Amerson with our top pick in 2013 and he was waived by the Redskins and subsequently picked up by the Raiders. We got no compensation back for him in a trade not even a conditional late round pick.

In 2016, we drafted Josh Doctson at WR. To say he has been disappointing to date is an understatement. He has a great skills toolbox but also has shown questionable hands and route running skills. He still looks very raw at times despite being such a high pick and having been in the building for 2 years working to learn this offense.

He has a four year deal with a team option. He's already through 2 years of that deal and we still don't know much if anything about what his future holds with us.

So, overall while the team may now be loathe to draft 'big uglies' at or near the top of the draft, the recent history shows that we seem to be a lot better at projecting OL and DL talent than we are with projecting talent at the 'stat' positions on the field.

Doctson just completed what was his rookie season this year. If we had that kind of production last year, then we would've been highly encouraged.

Just saying.

I hope they do not draft a QB in the 1st round. The ones they have in the last 80 or so years haven't worked out that well outside of Slingin' Sammy.

11 first round QBs and only Baugh had more wins than losses as a starter. 3 threw more TDs than Ints during their stay with the Redskins (Griffen, Cambell & Ramsey). 2 of those 11 (Jim Hardy (1945) & Don Allard (1959)) - never played as a Skin.

Griffen (2012) - Record: 14 & 21 - TDs/INTs 40/23.....Best TD to INT percentage 63.5%
Cambell (2005) - Record: 20 & 32 - TDs/INTs 55/38
Patrick Ramsey (2002) Record: 10 & 14 - TDs/INTs 34/29
Heath Shuler (1994) Record: 4 & 9 - TDs/INTs 13/19
Norm Snead (1961) Record: 9 & 30 & 3 - TDs/INTs 46/71
Ralph Guglielmi (1955) Record: 5-13-3 - TDs/INTs 17/40
Jack Scarbath (1953) Record: 3 & 7 - TDs/INTs 16/25
Harry Gilmer (1948) Record: 0 & 8 - TDs/INTs 17/38
Sammy Baugh (1937) Record: 11 & 10 ('50-'52) - TDs/INTs 187/203 Note: He has no records prior to 1950 of QB records as a starter. Several reasons for that but the Redskins record with Sammy prior to 1950, they were getting close to 2 wins for every loss.

Jim Hardy (1945) - never played as a Skin
Don Allard (1959) - never played as a Skin

Just a matter of history. And they have drafted QBs outside of the first round that have managed a winning record with more TD's than Int's so it's not impossible to do.

Nice job with the history John - but isn't that more accurately a reflection of the Redskins long-term ability to judge QB talent? If you can't find a true starting caliber QB in the 1st round of draft, I'm not sure I understand how you can be expected to find him in later rounds? That argument essentially says 'Finding a great QB is 100% luck - so just pick one somewhere and don't use a high pick on one'.

If your scouting department and front office knows what it's doing, you want to pick your QB with your highest pick if that's what it takes to get the guy you most believe can get it done. There's nothing magical about going QB in the first round - but logically it does afford you the most potential options at QB. The only caveat to using a first rounder for a QB is if you are certain the guy you believe in will be available at a later pick. But that's a) hard to be certain of, and b) is getting increasingly more difficult because of the sheer volumes of QBs being taken in the first round.

If you get the right QB with a first round pick, it will have been the greatest use of that pick you could ever have made. It's not picking high that's the problem, it's picking well. Even for teams that have top scouting and front office support - drafting a QB seems to be a crapshoot. College success in no way seems to ensure pro success. I don't know how you can tell which guys will thrive in the NFL and which one's are Fools Gold. And I don't see much evidence that our braniacs in Ashburn can either.

I don't want us to use high draft picks on a QB either for that exact reason. I'd much prefer we go after a talented 1-3 year player who's already on an NFL roster and who we have game film on. I'd have a lot more confidence in that approach. But if we DO decide to find our QB in the draft, we need to use the highest pick required to get the guy we absolutely believe in. I don't believe in worrying about 'value' when drafting a QB - I believe in getting your guy. I'd even be okay with trading up to get him if I had any confidence we knew who the right guy was.

I'm a lifelong student of history and I never tire of learning about it whether it is sports, humanity, geography, religious, political, scientific, etc. There is an old saying about those who ignore history will be doomed to repeat it. While there is some truth to that cliche, I also think it is part myth.

When it comes to the draft, I don't think you can look at history as much as you would in other areas of life. The draft in any sport is very unique. There are years when taking best player available is applicable. There are years when taking the best player available at a position of need is preferable. Then there are years when you need to make a few bold moves to target individual players and while that can be a risky move, it can also pay handsomely - for the short and long terms.

Too, I appreciate the history of drafting QBs that John has provided. However, these QBs were selected by various regimes and while the results were mostly poor, it is hard to compare the choices to what is out there today. Sammy Baugh was more than a QB. He punted and played DB (quite well in fact). Norm Snead brought us Sonny Jurgensen in a trade. Robert Griffin did bring us a year unlike any other.

Yes, getting a true franchise QB is what each team prefers and we would hope one can be found if Cousin Kirk walks. There is a lot of time between now and when free agency opens (two months). Seven weeks after that we have the draft. So much will happen in the weeks and months ahead - most of which is simply unpredictable.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ. The new year is churning along and the head coach of the Redskins seems a bit frustrated and fans tend to agree. Free agency, the draft, and training camp will be here before you know it. This is our second free agency update for the 2018 offseason. It's very early in this process and we really don't know how all of it will unfold. As we get closer to free agency, things will be somewhat clearer. Will Kirk Cousins sign a new long term deal? Will he be tagged with the franchise or transition tender? Is the team going to let him walk? Those are the biggest questions to be answered in the coming weeks.

Who will we target in free agency? Who will we re-sign? Who will we not re-sign? Who will get released? Feel free to offer your opinions and predictions.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days, weeks and months.

Offseason Updates:
As you know we ended the process of listing free agents from other teams, but this offseason is full of unpredictability. We will list some players of interest this year, but it won't be a comprehensive list and there is no way we can sign all of them.

Case Keenum, QB
Teddy Bridgewater, QB
Carlos Hyde, RB
Isaiah Crowell, RB
Paul Richardson, WR
Donte Moncrief, WR
Brice Butler, WR
Justin Pugh, OT/OG
Greg Robinson, OT/OG
Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB
Demario Davis, ILB
Sheldon Richardson, DE
Brent Urban, DE
DaQuan Jones, DT
Daniel McCullers, DT
Benny Logan, DE/DT
Beau Allen, DT

This list will grow, shrink, and change quite a bit. Feel free to produce a list of your own – we look forward to it.

So much uncertainty surrounds what the Redskins will do in the Kirk Cousins saga, but Jay Gruden has now gone on record saying that he no longer wants one year (tags of any kind) deals.

DC sports media guru Ben Standig has Georgia ILB Roquan Smith mocked to the Redskins in round one.

Another DC sports media member, Chris Russell, said that the Redskins should've given Cousins a transition tag after the 2016 season and likely could've matched any offer from other teams. BBQ fully agrees.

Nick Sundberg is in the running for the Walter Payton Man of the Year in the NFL. He is hoping to win and use the cash reward toward public schools.

Redskins media seems to be evenly divided on whether Kirk stays or goes. Radio 106.7 in DC thinks a long term deal gets done and NBCS Washington thinks otherwise. BBQ tends to agree with the latter (Rich Tandler, JP Finlay, Brian Mitchell, Chick Hernandez).

Personal Thoughts:
The offseason blog for BBQ is now known as “Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions”. We feel it is a better representation of what is provided in the offseason blog. If you have a better name, then please let our executive secretary or lawyers know.

BBQ is leaning toward the idea that Kirk Cousins has played his last game in a Redskins uniform. We also believe that we will target several free agent quarterbacks with the ultimate goal of signing Case Keenum.

See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

BBQ, if we release Cravens is there a chance the team goes after some of his bonus money to offset the dead money hit?

All with different front offices, coaching staffs, and teams. I have a hard time believing any of that has any sort of effect on our QB situation.

In fact I would argue the opposite, that we have NOT addressed the QB position early enough, consistently enough. Jason Campbell was born 15 years early. He is what teams are looking for now.

We've drafted 4 QBs in the 1st round since 1994. 23 drafts, and the most important position on the field has been our no 1 pick 4 times. And we wonder why we've been unable to get stability?

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.

Today we bring you the second round of mocks of the 2018 offseason. We've already signed one of our restricted free agents (Quinton Dunbar) to a three year contract, but today's focus is squarely on college prospects. We have two mocks for you today and that will be a weekly feature at BBQ for the next few weeks. One mock features the idea of keeping Kirk Cousins and the second mock will be devoted to a scenario of not retaining him.

We will continue this format until we know the status of Kirk Cousins. It's very complicated, but we hope to know more in the coming weeks.

The format for the mocks this offseason will feature shorter descriptions this year of each player. Time constraints from the fall and early winter have forced us to cram a lot of research into a smaller period of time.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we'd like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do.

Without any further delays, let's take a look at the first mocks of 2018.

Team Needs:
Quarterback (?)
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End (?)
Left Guard (?)
Defensive Tackle
Inside Linebacker
Strike Safety
Free Safety

Mock One: Kirk Cousins Returns

Round One: Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Assuming Zach Brown returns, this pairing would make for one of the best ILB combos in the league.
Other Possible Targets:
Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M
Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame
Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
Minkah Fitzpatrick, FS, Alabama
Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
Courtland Sutton, WR, Southern Methodist
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
The Redskins can't continue to rely on mid round prospects at running back.
Other Possible Targets:
Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Maurice Hurst, DE, Michigan
Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
DeShon Elliott, FS, Texas

Round Three: Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
Jim Tomsula wants a big and powerful body in the middle of his defensive line and gets his wish.
Other Possible Targets:
Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest
Marcus Allen, FS, Penn St.
Frank Ragnow, G/C, Arkansas
Malik Jefferson, ILB, Texas
Andrew Brown, DE, Virginia
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.

Round Four: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.
Jordan Reed could be released by the Redskins or traded in the offseason.
Other Possible Targets:
Justin Jones, DT, North Carolina St.
Luke Falk, QB, Washington St.
Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota St.
Harrison Phillips, DE, Stanford
Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma St.

Round Five: Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia
Su'a Cravens is a good strike, but is not likely to return. White could be even better in the same role.
Other Possible Targets:
Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
Jaylen Dunlap, CB, Illinois
Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia
Marcus Baugh, TE, Ohio St.
Wyatt Teller, OG, Virginia Tech
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.

Round Six: K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami
Having depth and a great deal of flexibility along the offensive line helps the Hurricanes prospect.
Other Possible Targets:
Allen Lazard, WR, Iowa St.
Breeland Speaks, DE, Mississippi
Steve Ishmael, WR, Syracuse
Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia
Lester Cotton, OG, Alabama
Ian Thomas, TE, Indiana

Round Seven: Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.
Coming from a lesser known program and conference, Wieneke actually has excellent skills and is an underrated prospect.
Other Possible Targets:
Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
Kurt Benkert, QB, Virginia
Brendan Mahon, G/OT, Penn St.
Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky
Matt Elam, DT, Kentucky
Donovan Wilson, CB, Texas A&M

Round Seven: Folorunso Fatukasi, DE, Connecticut
A late round prospect who was a defensive tackle for the Huskies, but would be an end at the next level.

Mock Two: Kirk Cousins Does Not Return
In this second mock, we go with the possibility that the Redskins were able to add a quarterback in free agency and will not draft one in the early rounds.

Round One: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
The new quarterback would like to have plenty of targets and Ridley is the best of this class.

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California

Round Three: Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech

Round Four: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.

Round Five: Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
Ferguson is a talented passer who would have the benefit of learning from a veteran.

Round Six: K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami

Round Seven: Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.

Round Seven: Folorunso Fatukasi, DE, Connecticut

Undrafted Free Agent Prospects:
Andrew Trumbetti, OLB, Notre Dame

There are your second round of mocks for 2018 and prospect lists. The draft will be here before you know it, but we have many mocks in the weeks and months ahead. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Starting next week I will separate the mocks and prospects list. The prospects will now be posted each week a day before the mocks. That list starts to grow when the Senior Bowl arrives and it is simply too long to include it with the mocks.

So does everyone have a guy in mind they hope falls to us? Regardless of where they might go I'm curious who's the one player you'd be praying falls to 13?

We'd NEVER pick him but damn Quenton Nelson (G from Notre Dame) would look great next to Trent.

Having Jon Allen drop to us last year was a huge gift.

At 13, it is likely another gift falls to the Redskins when you consider the number of QBs and WRs (Ridley, Sutton, Kirk) that could go before we pick. The Redskins would likely snap up Nelson that quick, imho.

I could do a couple of mocks later this month or early next month that is devoted to the idea that certain prospects will drop. It happens each year in every round for various reasons. If it is what everyone wants, then I will do so.

Vita Vea please.

I would also love Derwin James. But we really need help up front.

I think Vel Vita will actually be there for us McD. I wouldn't mind him either, year whatfrigginever into the 3-4 and skins FINALLY grab that true nose!

Reports are that the Broncos, whose staff will be coaching one of the two teams in the Senior Bowl, have requested that Baker Mayfield be assigned to that team.

BTW, I believe I heard that we signed Bibbs to a 2 year extension.
