Greetings to everyone in BGO land. The offseason is nearly here and today begins a process of looking at pending Free Agents, Mock Drafts, OTAs, Mini Camps, Training Camp, Roster Predictions, and any significant offseason news. Today we are posting key dates to know during this offseason. Next Tuesday, we will post the first look at free agency. Next Friday is the first offseason mock of 2018.

We consulted with the BBQ lawyers and they advised us to post the first offseason update a few days prior to the final regular season game. The new year arrives on Monday and Tuesday is being treated as a holiday, so we decided post this first entry of the upcoming offseason today. We look forward to all of your comments this offseason.

Feel free to use this offseason guide on key dates as a reference. We'll edit it if the date changes or if there are any key additions/subtractions.

So let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Important Dates For 2018 NFL Offseason

January 1 – Clubs may begin signing free agents. Clubs may sign/extend contracts for players selected in the first round of the 2015 draft. Option period begins for fifth year, first round selections from the 2015 NFL Draft. To exercise the option, the club must give written notice to the player on or after January 1, but prior to May 3.

January 7 -- Assistant coaches under contract to playoff clubs that have byes in the Wild Card games may be interviewed for head coaching positions through the conclusion of the Wild Card games.

January 14 -- Assistant coaches under contract to playoff clubs that won their Wild Card games may be interviewed for head coaching positions through the conclusion of Divisional Playoff games.

January 15 -- Deadline for college players who are underclassmen to apply for special eligibility. A list of players who are accepted into the NFL Draft will be sent to clubs on January 19.

January 20 -- East-West Shrine Game, Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida.

January 20 -- NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California.

January 27 -- Senior Bowl, Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile, Alabama.

January 28 -- An assistant coach whose team is participating in the Super Bowl and who has previously interviewed for another club's head coaching job, may have a second interview with such club no later than the Sunday preceding the Super Bowl.

January 31 -- Deadline for NFL clubs to try out and negotiate with CFL players whose 2017 contracts are due to expire at 12 noon, New York time, on February 13.

February 5 -- Waiver system begins for 2018.

February 13 -- Beginning at 12 noon, New York time, NFL clubs may begin to sign players whose 2017 CFL contracts have expired. Players under contract to a CFL club for the 2018 season or who have an option for the 2018 season are not eligible to be signed.

February 20 -- First day for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

February 27-March 5 -- NFL Scouting Combine, Indianapolis, Indiana.

March 6 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m. EST, deadline for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 12-14 -- Clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2017 Player Contracts at 4:00 p.m. EST, on March 14. However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4:00 p.m. EST on March 14.

March 14 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m. EST, clubs must exercise options for 2018 on all players who have option clauses in their 2017 contracts.

March 14 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m. EST, clubs must submit qualifying offers to their Restricted Free Agents with expiring contracts and to whom they desire to retain a Right of First Refusal/Compensation.

March 14 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m. EST, clubs must submit a Minimum Salary Tender to retain exclusive negotiating rights to their players with expiring 2017 contracts and who have fewer than three accrued seasons of free agency credit.

March 14 -- Top-51 Begins. All clubs must be under the 2018 salary cap prior to 4:00 p.m. EST.

March 9 -- All 2017 player contracts will expire at 4:00 p.m. EST.

March 14 -- The 2018 league year and free agency period begin at 4:00 p.m. EST.

The first day of the 2018 league year will end at 11:59:59 p.m. EST on March 9. Clubs will receive a personnel notice that will include all transactions submitted to the league office during the period between 4:00 p.m. EST and 11:59:59 p.m. EST on March 14.

March 14 -- Trading period for 2018 begins at 4:00 p.m. EST after expiration of all 2017 contracts.

March 25-28 -- Annual League Meeting, Orlando, Florida.
April 2 -- Clubs that hired a new head coach after the end of the 2017 regular season may begin offseason workout programs.

April 16 -- Clubs with returning head coaches may begin offseason workout programs.

April 20 -- Deadline for Restricted Free Agents to sign offer sheets.

April 27-29 -- 2018 NFL Draft, AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.

May 4-7 -- Clubs may elect to hold their one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp from Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday.

May 9 -- Deadline for Prior Club to send “May 8 Tender” to its unsigned Unrestricted Free Agents. If the player has not signed a Player Contract with a club by July 22 or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later, he may negotiate or sign a Player Contract from that date until the Tuesday following the 10th weekend of the regular season, at 4:00 p.m. EST, only with his prior club.

May 11-14 -- Clubs may elect to hold their one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp from Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday.

May 14 -- Rookie Football Development Programs begin.

May 17-20 -- NFLPA Rookie Premiere. Invited Rookies (typically, first and/or second-round selections) must be permitted by their respective clubs to attend. Such players are unavailable for offseason workouts, OTA days, and minicamps during this period.

May 22-24 -- Spring League Meeting, Atlanta, Georgia.

June 1 -- Deadline for Prior Club to send “June 1 Tender” to its unsigned Restricted Free Agents who received a qualifying offer for a Right of First Refusal Only in order for such player to be subject to the CBA's “June 15 Tender” provision.

June 2 -- For any player removed from the club's roster or whose contract is assigned via waivers or trade on or after June 2, any unamortized signing bonus amounts for future years will be included fully in Team Salary at the start of the 2019 League Year.

June 15 -- Deadline for club to withdraw qualifying offer to Restricted Free Agents and still retain exclusive negotiating rights by substituting “June 15 Tender” of one-year contract at 110 percent of the player's prior-year Paragraph 5 Salary (with all other terms of his prior-year contract carried forward unchanged).

Late June -- Rookie Transition Program to be held at individual clubs. Attendance is mandatory for all rookies.

July 16 -- At 4:00 p.m. EDT, deadline for any club that designated a Franchise Player to sign such player to a multiyear contract or extension. After this date, the player may sign only a one year contract with his prior club for the 2017 season, and such contract cannot be extended until after the club's last regular season game.

Mid-July -- Clubs are permitted to open preseason training camp for rookies and first-year players beginning seven days prior to the club's earliest permissible mandatory reporting date for veteran players.

Veteran players (defined as a player with at least one pension-credited season) other than quarterbacks or “injured players” (as defined in CBA Article 21, Section 6) may report to a club's preseason training camp no earlier than 15 days prior to the club's first scheduled preseason game or July 15, whichever is later.

Veteran quarterbacks and injured players may be required to report to the club's preseason training camp no earlier than five days immediately prior to the mandatory reporting date for all other veteran players, provided the club has already opened (or simultaneously opens) its official preseason training camp for all rookies and first-year players.

A three-day acclimation period will apply to players who are on a club's roster up to and including the mandatory veteran reporting date. Players who join the roster after that date may practice (including wearing pads) and play immediately after passing a physical.

July 23* -- Signing Period ends for unrestricted Free Agents to whom a “May 8 Tender” was made by prior club. After this date and until 4:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the 10th weekend of the regular season, prior club has exclusive negotiating rights.

* Or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later.

July 23 -- Signing Period ends for Transition Players with outstanding tenders. After this date and until 4:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the 10th weekend of the regular season, prior club has exclusive negotiating rights.

August 7 -- Deadline for players under contract to report to their clubs to earn an accrued season for free agency.

August 7 -- If a drafted rookie has not signed with his club by this date, he cannot be traded to any other club in 2018, and may sign a player contract only with the drafting club until the day of the Draft in the 2019 League Year.

September 1 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List. Simultaneously with the cut-down to 53, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must select one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non- Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; request waivers; terminate contract; trade contract; or continue to count the player on the Active List.

September 2 -- Claiming period for players placed on waivers at the final roster reduction will expire at 12 noon, New York time.

September 2 -- Upon receipt of the Personnel Notice at approximately 1:00 p.m., New York time, clubs may establish a practice squad of 10 players. No club, including the player's prior club, will be permitted to sign a player to a practice player contract until all clubs have received simultaneous notification via the above Personnel Notice that such player's prior NFL player contract has been terminated via the waiver system.

September 6 -- At 12:00 a.m., New York time, the Top 51 Rule expires for all NFL clubs.

September 6, 9-10 – The NFL regular season begins.

BTW, thanks for this. Would much rather be worrying about our upcoming playoff opponent. But without your work here, it would be a loooooooooooooooonger off season.
 
Playoffs or not, remember guys, to enjoy this last game against the Giants.
Because remember how the offseason is so long and barren of real football, that
you would be starving for any type of real game action, even a meaningless game like this.
So, savor it as much as you can.

This year, maybe more than most, will have some incredibly difficult decisions. Really tough decisions. Setting aside the QB situation for the moment, what else do we look for in the 1st round?

Another DL? A pass rusher?

And what about Trent Murphy vs. Galette?

Do we pay Jordan Reed again?

It should be entertaining.

But unless there's a Sean Taylor or Jim Brown available in the 1st, I'd hope for best lineman (offense or defense) or best ILB.

Of course, Jim Brown would be a wasted pick with Gruden at the helm.

For 2018 we're due to have $500K in dead cap with almost $54M in available cap.

I know there's lots of contracts to decide on including Kirks but still...time to go shopping!

Isn't there a rule where you have to spend most of your cap space every year? Makes ya wonder how the hell sone of those teams get by being so cheap.
 
49ers are a team to watch and soon. Smart, young leadership with a ton of money and a future star qb if they keep Garopolo. Laugh now while you still can.

The rule is for spending cash - not cap space although the cap space is the basis. That cash must be 89% of the teams cap space over a 4 year period. Like, if you sign a player for 5 years with a $50M signing bonus that counts as $50M cash spent in the that year of the 4 year period because the team paid it all out in the 1st year of the players contract even though the team gets to spread the hit out over 5 years.

FYI - first free agency update is coming on Tuesday and the first mock is Friday.

We are going to approach this offseason far differently than what we've done in the past. It is probably the most interesting offseason in a long time and we intend to give it plenty of attention.

Free agency updates will occur each week and will increase in frequency by mid February. Mocks will be posted each week and will increase in frequency by mid March.

We welcome your mocks, free agency predictions/recommendations, and all relevant information.

Buckle in. Starting next week it will be a crazy ride.
 
Our whole draft hinges on whether Kirk signs a LTD, or gets some kind of tag, or doesn't sign here at all.
That's gotta make it the toughest draft to mock.
So you're a bold man for taking this on, BB.
 
Bold? More like crazy insane. The database I continue to compile is much larger than it has been in the past.
 
Well, BB does an amazing job trying to parse all of the possibilities in a *typical* pre-draft period. What obviously makes this offseason much more fluid and unpredictable is the uncertainty at QB.

There is a ton of assumption and conjecture out there regarding our team after a down season. Much of it coming from supposed media 'insiders' who, if we're being honest, don't have much more inside information or insight than we do. There are lots of legitimate criticisms of the Allen/Gruden team, but being loose-lipped and/or leaking to the media have not been major issues with this front office. That's in stark contrast to previous situations, so one can't really blame fans and the twittersphere for seizing on every rumor and bit of conjecture as fact. But the truth is we simply don't know what the team will do with Cousins and at some of the other criticial positions such as DBs, special teams coach, WR, etc...

Setting aside hysteria and conspiracy theories, it's entirely possible that the Redskins:

1) Extend the current coaching staff to make it clear that we are in this for the long haul and that Gruden never has been 'on the hot seat' despite media predictions to the contrary.

2) Will offer to make Kirk the highest paid current starting QB in the NFL. I'm not predicting Kirk takes that deal - but I will say that those who believe Kirk's feelings about staying with the Redskins are personal and that his departure is a foregone conclusion are wrong. If the Redskins step up on the contract front, I think he's still open to staying. I believe they'll make him a huge offer because they don't want fans to point at a failure to sign Kirk as another FO failure. Whether or not they should do so, that's a different topic altogether. Personally, I think the irony here is that the Redskins are finally showing some reasonability and discipline with player decisions and will likely not be willing to break the bank at one position, even one as important as QB. But it is not 100% certain that Cousins is gone in 2018.

3) May facilitate a big sign and trade deal at the QB spot if they can't retain Cousins. There are several solid prospects/surprise starters out there. A swap of QBs could be a 'win win' if a team isn't in love with their starter and a deal to keep Cousins proves unworkable. Garappalo, Case Keenum, Paxton Lynch, Andy Dalton, Tyrod Taylor...there are lots of possible scenarios that might result in the Redskins getting at least something for Cousins if his departure is inevitable. This scenario becomes more likely if the Redskins either aren't in love with any of the 2018 draft prospects, or don't feel they will be in a position to grab one of their prospects of choice in the mid-1st round.

4) Make no major coaching changes of any kind - not even at Special Teams.

5) Move on from Bruce Allen. It's true that, from the start, Allen has had Snyder's ear and has seemed untouchable. But the hiring of McCloughan was a clear signal that Snyder is very sensitive to fan perception. There's been a ton of negative noise around Allen this year. I wouldn't rule out a purge at the top. If it happens, it'll happen soon.

6) Cut bait with Baushad Breeland. This guy is a talented but erratic drama queen. I think he's worn out his welcome in DC and is going to ask for ridiculous money. The Redskins will double down on Josh Norman and move on from Breeland.

7) Move on from Jordan Reed. Gibbs said once that the greatest ability is 'availability'. Gruden needs a productive TE and may have already secured a more durable replacement for Reed in Jeremy Sprinkle. We may see Reed traded for a 2nd or 3rd round pick this offseason - just a guess that Gruden has tired of seeing Reed on the injury list every week.

8) Resign Terrell Pryor to a LTD. I think the Redskins coaching staff may still believe Pryor can be a top WR - but that he had significant injuries this season that lead to an unimpressive showing his first year in DC. One benefit of his subpar debut, he will come relatively cheap.

Those are just some of the 'surprises' we could see. Some or all of them could happen. I think the key point is that I wouldn't trust conventional media wisdom this offseason. There are going to be some surprises. And each of these situations has the potential to dramatically impact our draft plans.
