Thinking that Lanier will put up similar numbers in a backup role this season. He really improved a great deal in 2017 and made a name for himself.

The Alabama boys are defensive ends as Boone mentioned and are highlighted in that post. Payne could see some time at DT.

The Redskins defensive scheme doesn't really use a nose tackle in the classical sense, but they do line up in both the 3-4 and 4-3 alignments each game. DTs are going to play a greater role than in previous seasons.

Appreciate it BB. I’m just worried that since our D has yet to run a conventional NT, we’ll be bottom dwellers in run & total D again.

We’ve definitely gotten younger and hopefully more athletic on the line though and that’s a huge step.

Due to the hybrid nature of the defense - switching many times in a game to a 3-4 base and a 4-3 base - the traditional NT role simply can't be defined and that is why the DTs are used.

Tomsula mentioned yesterday that Ziggy is going back to DE (just as we thought earlier in the thread) and will not be out of position as a DT - unless the injury bug hits like it did last year.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you are having a good week. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on winning the Stanley Cup. Let’s hope the Redskins aren’t far behind with a Super Bowl trophy.

OTAs are over and the final mini-camp is this week. Training camp will be here soon. We’ll cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the inside linebackers and later this week we will look at the outside linebackers. We’ll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

    Let’s get right to it!

    Inside Linebackers:
    Zach Brown
He is the leading tackler from last season. He is a team leader. He is a reliable and steady presence. Zach Brown is ferocious against the run, but is a liability at times in the passing defense.

Brown is the best inside backer on the team and is poised to have another great season.

    Mason Foster
When Mason Foster was signed as a free agent from Tampa Bay, many pundits and experts thought he would be nothing more than a backup and primarily a special teams player.

Foster will continue to start next to Brown and should have another solid season.

    Zach Vigil
No one expected this to happen. Vigil was able to earn some playing time in the second half of 2017 due to injuries and made the most of it. He quickly developed into a quality backup.

Vigil proved he belongs and his role could continue to expand.

    Josh Harvey-Clemons
Harvey-Clemons continues to improve and he should force his way into the line-up as a quality hybrid player this season. He can drop back in coverage as needed to play the strike role.

His talent is undeniable and while Harvey-Clemons is not a starter (yet), the role he plays will continue to increase.

    Martrell Spaight
Spaight is a good special teams player and that has saved him in the past. Will it be enough this year? Stay tuned.

    Other Inside Linebackers
Shaun Dion Hamilton is someone who could force Spaight off the roster if he has a good camp and can demonstrate special team skills. He could also end up on the injured reserve list.

Jerod Fernandez, Vontae Diggs, and Pete Robertson are candidates for the practice squad.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Later this week we will look at the outside linebackers.

    Have a great week.

OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, the draft, and free agency have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here in five weeks. We’ll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the outside linebackers and next week we will look at the cornerbacks and safeties. We’ll post an evaluation for the remainder of the roster over the next two weeks.

    Let’s get right to it!

    Outside Linebackers:
    Ryan Kerrigan
He has 71.5 sacks over the last eight seasons and is not slowing down anytime soon. Kerrigan should continue to post impressive numbers and is likely to have another double digit sack season.

Look for Kerrigan to have two touchdowns, twelve sacks, and 75 tackles (combined and solo).

    Preston Smith
Smith should be able to post impressive numbers after major upgrades and improvements to an already good defensive line. He will be playing in a contract year and this likely provides the incentives to perform at a high level.

Look for Smith to register nine sacks, three fumble recoveries, and seventy tackles (combined and solo).

    Ryan Anderson
Anderson has already looked the part of an improved player in the off-season. He should be a solid backup to Kerrigan and will likely see a vast upgrade to his role in 2018.

    Pernell McPhee
McPhee joins the Redskins this season as a designated pass rushing specialist. He should have a very good season and playing in a limited role may cut down significantly on his recent injury troubles.

    Other Inside Linebackers
Alex McCalister is not likely to make the roster. Inside linebacker Pete Robertson could also see time on the outside and is a likely practice squad member.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Next week we will look at the cornerbacks and safeties.

    Have a great weekend.

OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, and the draft have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here in five weeks. We’ll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the cornerbacks and later this week we will look at the safeties. We’ll post an evaluation next week for the special teams unit.

    Let’s get right to it!

    Cornerbacks:
    Josh Norman
The biggest compliment an opposing quarterback can give a cornerback is to throw very few passes in that direction. Such is the fate of Josh Norman. Look for Norman to have another stellar year.

With a vastly improved defensive line, look for Norman to have five interceptions and a pro bowl season.

    Quinton Dunbar
Is Dunbar ready to take the next step? It has been an amazing climb for the undrafted receiver. He embraced the change to corner and never looked back.

He should have six interceptions, but also give up two long touchdowns in 2018.

    Fabian Moreau
Moreau is likely to start in the slot, but a very good training camp and preseason could vault him ahead of Quinton Dunbar and start opposite of Josh Norman. If he is the slot corner, look for the UCLA product to have a solid sophomore campaign.

Moreau could have two interceptions, but struggle in the first half of the season with talented tight ends. He should improve as the season progresses.

    Orlando Scandrick
Look for Scandrick to take on the “Will Blackmon” role in 2018 – a steady veteran presence and replacement for any players who might be injured. Could step into a starting role if Dunbar or Moreau struggles.

    Greg Stroman
Stroman may not make the roster of fifty-three, but he could make the final cut as a punt returner and a backup corner. At the very least, he will be a member of the practice squad.

    Josh Holsey
He could be heading to the practice squad. Holsey is not known for having special teams skills and that could hurt him as he fights for a roster spot.

    Other Cornerbacks
Kenny Ladler, Ranthony Texada, and Danny Johnson are all fighting for spots on the practice squad.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. On Friday we will look at the safeties. Next week we will focus on special teams.

    Have a great week.

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you had a good week. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the safeties. We’ll post an evaluation next week for the special teams unit.

    Let’s get right to it!

    Strong/Strike Safeties:
    DJ Swearinger
Swearinger may not be the most polished strong safety in the NFL, but his leadership skills are superior to most. Swearinger could see a decent elevation in his game due to an improved defensive line.

    Deshazor Everett
Everett is a dependable backup to Swearinger and has a reputation as a hard hitter. He is also a special teams ace.

    Josh Harvey-Clemons
Harvey-Clemons plays the strike role as a hybrid safety and inside linebacker. He has added some bulk and muscle to his frame this off-season.

    Free Safeties:
    Montae Nicholson
Many fans and members of the Redskins media were perplexed with the fourth round pick in 2017. Nicholson was considered to be a project, but he quickly established himself as a talented player and is now the starter at free safety

    Troy Apke
Taking Apke in the fourth round was a major head scratcher. We were saying the same thing a year ago about Nicholson. He will be the primary backup to Nicholson.

    Other Safeties
Kenny Ladler (also a CB), Quin Blanding, and Fish Smithson are practice squad candidates. Smithson is not a lock to be on the practice squad.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Next week we will focus on special teams.

    Have a great weekend.

Sounds like you're not too high on Smithson.
Poor Smithson needs to go fishing for compliments.

Not high or low on any player before training camp. Perhaps he can have a good training camp and move up the depth chart.

Thanks for the kind words. They made me look good. It was a lot of fun and we really went into what the roster could look like this season. Ian, Nathan, and Jacob had some great insights. The roster predictions will certainly change over the next couple of months and look quite a bit different in late August.

I'll probably do another podcast with them in August.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you are having a good summer. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, and the draft have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here in four weeks. We’ll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations and today will be the final entry in this series. Feel free to scroll back in this thread and see our assessment of the entire roster by position. Today we feature the special teams unit.

Later this week we will feature a new series and that will continue until the eve of training camp. It’s a surprise – don’t spoil it!

    Let’s get right to it!

    Special Teams Unit:
    Tress Way
Tress Way is firmly entrenched as the punter of choice. Sam Irwin-Hill will provide camp relief for Way, but he will not last beyond the preseason games.

    Dustin Hopkins
Hopkins is the placekicker. The only placekicker on the roster. What are your plans for the 4th of July? It gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Unless you live in Key West.

    Punt Returners
For now, Jamison Crowder is still the number one punt returner. Other players that could challenge Crowder include Greg Stroman, Samaje Perine, Trey Quinn, Troy Apke (just thinking out loud here), Kapri Bibbs, and Josh Holsey.

    Kick Returners
There are no front runners for kick returner at this time, but look for these players to receive consideration: Brian Quick, Samaje Perine, Trey Quinn, Robert Davis, Troy Apke (still thinking out loud here), Maurice Harris, Kapri Bibbs, and Josh Holsey.

There is our final look at roster position evaluations this off-season. Starting Friday, we will feature a new series and that will continue until the eve of training camp. Again, it’s a surprise – don’t spoil it!

    Have a great week.

    Hail To The Redskins!
