Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

I have a concussion
No, I have a permanent injury and will always need glasses... even though I already wear them
Now I want to retire
No, maybe I don't

BYE!!!

So basically we...

2018
Moved up 8 spots in the 4th round
Moved up 8 spots in the 5th round
*GAIN a 5th round pick

2019
*Gain a 6th round pick

Not bad considering dude was a severe head case. Shows we need to do better homework on these cats.

I heard the 6th rounder was conditional based on if he played in a playoff game.

We have draft Capital now to do things

We move up 4 spots in the 4th round and 7 spots in the 5th round.

We get an additional 5th this year and a conditional 6th next year.

Doubtful we get the 6th rounder next year, but I'll take the extra 5th and higher picks for those middle rounds. Kid could be a beast, but he burnt his bridge here. Get what you can for him and move on, this is a solid move.

Scot McCloughan really went off the rails with his 2016 draft choices.

He indicated when he came here that the #1 thing he was looking for in guys to add to the roster via trade, free agency and draft was an ingrained commitment to the game and the profile of being a trueblood 'football player'.

We took Josh Doctson at #2 2 overall despite the fact he was really a great raw athlete who dominated in college physically but didn't have much sophistication or maturity to his game.

Last year at times he didn't look like he even knew the plays or where he was supposed to go.

The only thing he was good at was the play you draw up in the dirt - send a guy deep and throw it high enough for a jump ball.

So much for football smarts and IQ.

And then in Round 2 Scot took Su'a Cravens, a player who walked away from his college team at USC and didn't come into the NFL with a definite position to play.

McCloughan is gone but these types of mistakes live on.

We got back a draft pick and a conditional one as well for Cravens, but what we really needed was a #2 pick from 2016 that was coming on and challenging for a starting job.

It would have been nice to see Scot take a DL or a LB in either Round 1 or 2 that was what he preached about 'a hard nosed football player'.

If he had done that this team would have been better in 2017 and going forward.

Doctson? He also started here going on IR with an injury the team consistently failed to see on MRI's or physical exams. It was like with Cravens all a big mystery.

I am concerned that this time next year we will be entertaining a deal like the one for Cravens to simply try and recoup something for a player who has no real future here.

On Doctson, he does have to get his catch percentage up but he averaged 4 targets a game through the first 14 games then 12 a game in his last 2. As far as jump balls go - maybe fewer jump balls if the QB throws past him and lets him make a play on the ball where a DB has to go through him, not up with him. Smith a guy who throws past his receivers so they have a better chance to make a catch uncontested.

First 14 games caught over 52% catch ratio (29 catches on 55 targets), last 2 games, 26% on catches (23 targets with 6 receptions).

I think comparing Doctson to Cravens is pretty unfair. I have never heard anyone allege he really wasn't hurt. And although his 2nd year was shaky, not all of that was on him, and at least he showed he could come back from whatever the injuries were.

That's a damn site from what Cravens has done since being signed.

I really really don't want to hear any more Saint Scot the Saviour talk. McCloughan didn't do shit for the team's ability to hit on players in the draft - really the only reason we took a chance on him. We could've used Mel Kiper's big board and done better - and that is a sorry ass truth. He was either liquored up through the entire gig or he just wasn't anywhere near the talent savant we were told he would be.

I agree with Elephant. We got something for Cravens. Move on. And don't count me among the bunch that thinks Craven's going to make us regret letting him go by becoming a dominant safety or LB. As someone on Twitter said, he hasn't even proven he can play in the NFL yet.

Completely agree with this. I was excited when Scot was hired. It's what everyone has wanted. But his picks have been almost all dogs, and not in a good way. I don't know what happened or what went down to lead to his firing, but his record on draft picks with the Redskins is enough to get anyone fired.

The sad thing is, the biggest disasters he drafted were legit NFL talent level football players, the problems seem to lie between the ears

To be fair...

2016 7 Steven Daniels 7th rounder
2016 7 Keith Marshall Injured

2015 1 Brandon Scherff Starter
2015 2 Preston Smith Starter
2015 3 Matt Jones Gone and forgotten
2015 4 Jamison Crowder Starter
2015 4 Arie Kouandjio Cut, brought back, started some games
2015 5 Martrell Spaight Quality backup

2015 6 Evan Spencer Retired
2015 7 Austin Reiter Tore ACL playing for the Browns in Oct 2016, havent seen anything since. No games started 2017

There are a fair amount of contributors in his 2 drafts... and I included Kouandjio because he was taken in the 4th and has started games. He's not a worldbeater or anything but he's still a piece.

What does stand out to me is that 3 players he's drafted have retired... with Cravens coming back....

Offseason Updates:
Here are the Su'a Cravens trade details:
A. Redskins get the second of Denver's two fifth round picks (number 163 overall).
B. The Redskins swap fourth round positions with Denver (the lower of Denver's two fourth round picks – number 109 overall, up from 113).
C. The Redskins swap fifth round positions with Denver's remaining fifth rounder (pick number 142, up from 149).
D. The Redskins receive a conditional 2020 sixth round pick if Cravens plays in a playoff game in early 2019 or early 2020.

Here are the picks the Redskins now have (by round) in the 2018 draft:
1, 2, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7.

As it stands now, the Redskins would have four compensatory picks in the 2019 draft – 3rd, 5th, 6th, 6th.

The Redskins now have $19.3M cap room and would have small cap ramifications if Terrell McClain is released as a June 1 candidate. The dead cap would be $3.75M, but could be spread out over two years.

While Johnathan Hankins continues to ponder his future, it is important to note who represents him. Kevin Poston of the notorious Poston brothers is his agent and is widely known for his shenanigans with clients. Keep a watch for developments.

The new cap for 2018 is $177.2M.

We have ended the list of potential free agents as the list has dwindled and free agency is now well into a third (pre-draft) phase.

With the new extension for Alex Smith as he joins the Redskins, we have learned that the total deal is for five years (four year extension).

Personal Thoughts:
There was no way possible that Su'a Cravens was returning to the team. Multiple reports suggested that he was not going to report to training camp and the Redskins had no intention of having him on the opening day roster.

Even though Bashaud Breeland failed a Carolina physical, BBQ believes there is no way he returns to the Redskins.

See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Mel Kiper had us taking Rueben Foster in one of his last mocks and a lot of people including myself thought the skins would draft him but Anderson falling saved us. The guy has been arrested for possession of MJ and domestic violence since Jan so he is looking at least a 4 game suspension maybe more.

I think a lot of people think we have to hit on every draft pick, albeit that would be nice over all that's a lot of contributors. Ideally you want around 10 draft picks each draft. Sometimes that's not possible as you have to have trade partners or compensation picks.

With Fuller getting traded hurts a little I think with our secondary coach is one of the best and players played better last year. If we get the same improvement the secondary could soon become a position of strength

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.

Today we bring you our latest mock of the 2018 offseason and there are some changes. The Redskins are evaluating more prospects each week and the draft is just under four weeks away. BBQ continues to cover the 2018 offseason now with multiple updates each week. This week we will go to two mocks (Wednesday and Today) and the frequency will increase as late April approaches.

The last of our guest mocks posted Tuesday. Let us know if you want us to do this again next year.

The format for the mocks this offseason will feature shorter descriptions this year for each player. Time constraints from the fall and early winter have forced us to cram a lot of research into a smaller period of time.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we'd like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do.

Without any further delays, let's take a look at the latest mock of 2018.

Team Needs:
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End (?)
Left Guard
Defensive Tackle
Inside Linebacker (?)
Strike or Free Safety (?)

Round One: Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Jim Tomsula wants a big and powerful body in the middle of his defensive line and gets his wish.
Other Possible Targets:
Leighton Vander Esch, OLB, Boise St.
Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Derwin James, FS, Florida St.
Harold Landry, OLB, Boston College
Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
Derrius Guice, RB, Louisiana St.

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
The Redskins can't continue to rely on mid round prospects at running back and this is the year when the Redskins make a firm commitment to the running back corps.
Other Possible Targets:
Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama
Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
Harrison Phillips, DE/DT, Stanford
Darius Leonard, ILB, South Carolina St.
Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia

Round Four: Josey Jewell, ILB, Iowa
A Josey Jewell/Zach Brown tandem could produce one of the better inside linebacker duos in the league.
Other Possible Targets:
Nathan Shepherd, DT, Fort Hays St.
Dante Pettis, WR, Washington
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.
Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond
Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.
Korey Robertson, WR, Southern Mississippi
Dalton Schultz, TE, Stanford
Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia

Round Five: Siran Neal, SS/FS/CB, Jacksonville St.
A versatile defensive back who could likely step in at the corner slot position immediately.
Other Possible Targets:
Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin
Sean Welsh, G/C, Iowa
Allen Lazard, WR, Iowa St.
Micah Kiser, ILB, Virginia
Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
Fred Warner, OLB, Brigham Young
Equanimeous St. Brown, WR, Notre Dame

Round Five: Folorunso Fatukasi, DT/DE, Connecticut
A late round prospect who was a defensive tackle for the Huskies, but could also see time at end on the next level.

Round Six: K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami
Having depth and a great deal of flexibility along the offensive line helps the Hurricanes prospect.
Other Possible Targets:
Brad Bozeman, C, Alabama
Dorian O'Daniel, ILB, Clemson
Chase Litton, QB, Marshall
Adonis Alexander, CB, Virginia Tech
Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia
Poona Ford, DT, Texas

Round Seven: Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.
Coming from a lesser known program and conference, Wieneke actually has excellent skills and is an underrated prospect.
Other Possible Targets:
Brendan Mahon, G/OT, Penn St.
Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky
Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech
Teo Redding, WR, Bowling Green
Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
Darren Carrington, WR, Utah

Round Seven: Troy Apke, FS, Penn St.
Speed, speed, and more speed. Should be an excellent special teams player. Can come in on passing downs and provide solid coverage.

Undrafted Free Agent Prospects:
Andrew Trumbetti, OLB, Notre Dame
Cole Reyes, SS, North Dakota
Jester Weah, WR, Pittsburgh
Evan Berry, KR/FS, Tennessee
Jordan Thomas, CB, Oklahoma
Coleman Shelton, OG/C, Washington
Donovan Wilson, CB, Texas A&M
Ryan Finley, QB, North Carolina St.
Reggie Carter, ILB, Georgia
Eddy Peneiro, K, Florida
Drew Bailey, DE/DT, Louisville
Cody O'Connell, OG, Washington St.
Walter Brady, OLB, Middle Tennessee St.
Jeb Blazevich, TE, Georgia
Bruce Hector, DE/DT, South Florida

There is the latest mock of the 2018 offseason. We will have two more mocks next week, a free agency update on Monday, and a prospects update on Thursday. The draft will be here before you know it, but we have many mocks in the weeks ahead. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Remember that McCloughan admitted that Jay Gruden was the one that recommended the team take Matt Ioannidis in the 5th round of the draft that year.

Also, let's remember that Jamison Crowder and Preston Smith have been somewhat inconsistent performers who are in essence playing for a new contract in 2018.

It is conceivable that either or both could end up playing out their contracts like Trent Murphy and departing in free agency as we look to other players who are more reliable and provide top end production.

Crowder has been one of the most consistent players on the roster. 59/67/66 receptions his first 3 seasons. Between 10-12/yds per reception all 3 years. Has only missed 1 game in his career. His reception % dipped slightly in 2017, but so did Cousins play. Could we be getting more out of him? Probably. It's unclear to me whether he can't break out of WR2/WR3 numbers because he's just not that talented, or because of Cousins tendencies.

Crowders max is a between a 2-3 recieved. Redskins will throw him an offer I imagine between 4-6 million maybe a little higher. If he hits free agency and signs a big contract so be it just like almost everyone else he is expendable and replaceable. Hopefully he does sign though. I think he is more effective when Reed is playing.

I got the distinct impression last year that Cousins was a little lost without his usual trio of Garcon, Jackson and Reed.

Those guys had been his comfort blanket for a few years and with two of them gone and the other limited it sometimes seemed that Cousins didn't know where to go next and really struggled to trust anyone to be a new WR1. He had options in Pryor and Doctson but couldn't get on the same page with them. I thought Crowder might become his primary but that didn't happen either.

It does make me wonder how he'll get on in Minnesota where he needs to establish new chemistry with the guys there. On the flipside Smith has been around the League with a few different teams and never shown an issue getting on the same page as his new teammates.

So I'm cautiously optimistic.

I think we might learn this year whether last years lack of WR production was due to the WR's or the QB. Gonna be interesting watching how Smith and Cousing both adapt to their new surroundings.

I'm sure that was a factor, but I actually think not having Jordan Reed out there, particularly as a safety valve target, has always turned Cousins from an impressive QB to just a good one. Reed, when he is healthy (I know, I know...) is the best pass catching TE in the league. He gets open, almost on every play, has great hands, and is one of the most athletic TEs after the catch the NFL has ever seen. If it weren't for his game-changing skills, the Redskins would've cut bait on him a long time ago. I'm very skeptical he will ever be able to overcome his injury issues as I know a lot of us are.
