Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

The sad part is, unless Sprinkle steps up this year, we just let the best blocking TE on the team, walk.

Don't get me wrong, as much as Niles was a good team guy, his on field contributions will hardly be missed. But our running game suffers immensely due to the absence of even average blocking from the TE position.

Here's hoping Sprinkle, and a player not yet known, will start to turn that position into a strength for the running game.

We need to trade Charmin. Cause he's so soft. Davis can handle the pass receiving duties from the TE position.

It is curious to me that a former wide receiver could never seem to make enough of an impact as a receiver at TE to get more reps on the field.

You would figure Paul could at least run a 4.55-4.6 and that together with some work in the passing game over 3-4 years should have resulted in more of an impact on offense.

The experiment lasted as long as it could have. You won't see anyone else in the NFL give him more than vet minimum for 2018.

Well... we did trade Deion Sanders and Darrel Green combined to the Chiefs...

As far as FA tight ends what do you guys think of bringing in either Austin Seferian-Jenkins from the Jets (25) or Trey Burton from the iggles (26)?

I think we'll go into the 2018 season with the 3 TEs currently on the roster. Not a good draft for TEs and If Reed can get healthy and Sprinkle develop, we're stocked at that position. I've already said what I think in regards to Reed.

Sprinkle is definitely interesting. Seems he just couldn't get on the field. Was there any local stuff on why JS couldn't get on the field more?

Here is the meal I am thinking about for the night of the draft. This would allow me to have leftovers for the second night of the draft and on Saturday - the third day of the draft. The diet would resume after the draft.

Niles Paul seemed like a good man and a solid citizen. He was a Swiss-army-knife type of player who noticeably lacked a defining skill that couldn't be lived without. He very well could be a glue guy that a better roster could afford to keep around due to the value of his intangibles. But, this team? I'm having a hard time generating any emotion over the news. Responders on social media are acting as if we cut Ryan Kerrigan. I don't get it. Shit wild.

He has been on our roster for 6 seasons, of which he played a full 4. He was a great special teams player and a spot player on offense. 6 seasons with his skill set is a good career. Why should he be so mad?

As far as FA tight ends what do you guys think of bringing in either Austin Seferian-Jenkins from the Jets (25) or Trey Burton from the iggles (26)?

I'd like to look at Virgil Green. A little older than those guys (29) but he can block very well. A year or two with Sprinkle might bode well. They've got TE's that can catch, Green doesn't need to do that.

Yeah that would be a solid pick up too JB. A steady handed blocker is exactly what Alex needs.

I think our offense needs that TE, starting G & a field stretching WR. The only stud out of those 3 needs to be a G imho.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.

Today we bring you our latest mock of the 2018 offseason and there are some changes, including a trade. The combine ended early this week in Indianapolis and the Redskins are evaluating more prospects. BBQ will continues to cover the 2018 offseason now with multiple updates each week.

We will have a new guest mock on Monday – be sure to look for it.

Free agency arrives on Wednesday and the 2018 offseason will kicked into high gear. The format for the mocks this offseason will feature shorter descriptions this year for each player. Time constraints from the fall and early winter have forced us to cram a lot of research into a smaller period of time.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we'd like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do.

Without any further delays, let's take a look at the latest mock of 2018.

Team Needs:
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End (?)
Left Guard
Defensive Tackle
Inside Linebacker (?)
Strike or Free Safety (?)

Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down to the latter part of round one and pick up second, third, and sixth rounders and a third in 2019.

Round One: Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Jim Tomsula wants a big and powerful body in the middle of his defensive line and gets his wish.
Other Possible Targets:
Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama
Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia
Derwin James, FS, Florida St.
Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame
Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
Tremaine Edmunds, OLB, Virginia Tech

Round Two: Ronald Jones, RB, Southern California
The Redskins can't continue to rely on mid round prospects at running back.
Other Possible Targets:
Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.
Derrius Guice, RB, Louisiana St.
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia

Round Two: Darius Leonard, ILB, South Carolina St.
Leonard impressed during his final season in college and is still turning heads with his superior skills and athleticism. Solid against the run and pass.

Round Three: Frank Ragnow, OC/OG, Arkansas
With Spencer Long likely to leave in free agency and Shawn Lauvao not returning, the Redskins find their left guard of the future.
Other Possible Targets:
R.J. McIntosh, DE/DT, Miami
Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota St.
Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest
Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Harrison Phillips, DE/DT, Stanford
Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia
Andrew Brown, DE, Virginia

Round Four: Uchenna Nwosu, OLB, Southern California
An ultra-versatile edge who knocks down passes often. Can drop back in coverage. Candidate for the hybrid role at strike safety in various packages.
Other Possible Targets:
Kalen Ballage, RB, Arizona St.
Dante Pettis, WR, Washington
Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond
Equanimeous St. Brown, WR, Notre Dame
Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn St.
Korey Robertson, WR, Southern Mississippi
Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia
Josey Jewell, ILB, Iowa

Round Five: Siran Neal, SS/FS/CB/ST, Jacksonville St.
A versatile defensive back who could likely step in at the corner slot position immediately.
Other Possible Targets:
Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin
Allen Lazard, WR, Iowa St.
Micah Kiser, ILB, Virginia
Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis
Fred Warner, OLB, Brigham Young
B.J. Hill, DT, North Carolina St.

Round Six: Chase Litton, QB, Marshall
A bigger/taller prospect that would have the luxury of learning behind a seasoned veteran. Long term starter potential.
Other Possible Targets:
Brad Bozeman, C, Alabama
Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
K.C. McDermott, G/OT, Miami
Adonis Alexander, CB, Virginia Tech
Quin Blanding, SS, Virginia
Poona Ford, DT, Texas

Round Six: Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado St.
Gallup was once a highly rated prospect and had a decent college career. Alex Smith would make him better.

Round Seven: Troy Apke, FS, Penn St.
Speed, speed, and more speed. Should be an excellent special teams player. Can come in on passing downs and provide solid coverage.
Other Possible Targets:
Brendan Mahon, G/OT, Penn St.
Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky
Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St.
Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech
Evan Berry, KR/FS, Tennessee
Folorunso Fatukasi, DT/DE, Connecticut
Coleman Shelton, OG/C, Washington
Darren Carrington, WR, Utah

Round Seven: Brandon Facyson, CB, Virginia Tech
For the second year in a row the Redskins select a cornerback in the final round. An all around good player who has regressed a bit, but is a good prospect.

Undrafted Free Agent Prospects:
Andrew Trumbetti, OLB, Notre Dame
Cole Reyes, SS, North Dakota
Jester Weah, WR, Pittsburgh
Jordan Thomas, CB, Oklahoma
Donovan Wilson, CB, Texas A&M
Ryan Finley, QB, North Carolina St.
Reggie Carter, ILB, Georgia
Eddy Peneiro, K, Florida
Drew Bailey, DE/DT, Louisville
Cody O'Connell, OG, Washington St.
Walter Brady, OLB, Middle Tennessee St.
Jeb Blazevich, TE, Georgia
Bruce Hector, DE/DT, South Florida

There is the latest mock of the 2018 offseason. We will have another guest mock on Monday and return with a mock of our own late next week. The draft will be here before you know it, but we have many mocks in the weeks ahead. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Honey Badger to DC?

I loved him coming out of college.

The Seahawks signed 33 year old blocking TE Anthony Fasano to provide holes for Marshawn Lynch.

We don't need to go crazy here about our tight ends and think about taking a guy in Round 2 or making a major trade.

We need to go into free agency and find a capable, reliable veteran who can execute in the running game.

We have two top shelf receiving tight ends already.

As to the thought that having a blocking TE in the game telegraphs what we are going to do, this is where coaching comes in. In a couple of those third and short conversion downs put Chris Thompson in with the heavy package and then throw the ball over the top and break it downfield.

Remember when the Redskins had Don Warren and Ron Middleton in as blockers on third downs?

Didn't prevent Gibbs from dialing up plays for Gary Clark or Ricky Sanders when they were the only wide receivers on the field in those formations.

I like the idea of signing Virgil Green. At 29, we know what he is. The league knows what he is. The front office can probably estimate his next contract within $250K-300K of what its ultimately going to be on the market.

Let's make the move and not depend upon Jeremy Sprinkle to suddenly blossom in the role. He's 23 and still learning his way in the NFL. He's going to need another year IMO before he contributes regularly on offense.

Keep seeing mocks that have us taking a corner.

They know us well....trying to build a defense backwards has been our M.O. for 20 some yrs.

Jonathan Allen was a gift from the football gods last year. Hope we follow that up by adding a lineman or at least a front seven talent to the defense.

I know nothing of this guy. Is this a good move?

An article from a couple of weeks ago in the NY Post. link: https://nypost.com/2018/02/28/jets-release-muhammad-wilkerson/

It pretty much covers what his past issues have been - habitual tardiness & injuries. He hasn't had drug or criminal issues but the dude has serious issues with getting to work on time and really not productive in the last couple of years. Still pretty good against the run though. He hit the cap @ $18M with the Jets last year and they are eating $9M in dead money this year (but still did clear $11M in cap space) by cutting him. 2 years into a 5 year deal.

I'd pass but a very low salary/incentive laden contract might be palatable.
