Maybe the Pats just come in with a gun to their heads and give them an offer they can't refuse but some teams just go outta their way to come up on the short end of the straw. This year (so far).

1st round: It's all part of the same trade, just breaking it down a little bit.
Part 1: NE England trades their 32nd overall to the Saints for Brandon Cooks (20th overall in his draft). So basically they traded up 12 spots.
Part 2: Additionally the Pats traded their 3rd round pick they got from the Browns (103rd overall) for the Saints 4th (118th overall). They trade up 12 spots in the first and gave up 15 spots from their pick at the end of the third in compensation. Huh? Well that 4th probably is gone due to inflate-a-gate but not the point.

2nd round: It's all part of the same trade, just breaking it down a little bit.
Part 1: NE Trades their 2nd round pick (64th overall) to Carolina for Kony Ealy (60th overall pick in his draft). They traded up 4 spots.
Part 2: The Panthers also send along their 3rd round pick (72nd overall). WTF? That's like trading up and getting picks at the same time. NE pretty much gave up 8 spots in the draft (going from the bottom of the 2nd to the top of the 3rd) and got Ealy in return.

So they traded out of the first but got first round talent. They traded out of the second round but got second round talent. These aren't old guys that they've traded for and they have proven talent. And they added a 3rd round (8th pick) and a 4th round (10th pick). They still have the original 3rd round spot (96th) and again they'll probably lose that 4th but they'll still have the one they got from Seattle. Their original 4th rounder (137th overall) went to Indy for Dwayne Allen plus the Pats also got a 6th.
Even though they had previously traded their 5th in the Mingo deal, they have a fifth from Denver (163rd pick) and a comp pick (183rd). 1 pick each in rounds 6 & 7.

Two guys you know are worth their 1st and 2nd round trades, then two 3rds & two 4ths & two 5ths. Plus the 6th & 7th. Their 1st & 2nd rounders are the bag and there's still 8 picks going into draft day. It seems like every trade they do, the Pats always get a draft pick as part of the deal. Maybe only a 6th or 7th but always get a pick. That 6th they got from Indy? Takes the place of the 6th they sent to Detriot for LB Kyle Van Noy. And a 7th round pick.

They could have given us a rotten ham sammich and stale Coke and we still got the better deal

The Pats are an interesting case. Everyone wants to be like them (for obvious reasons - Super Bowls). But their draft performance hasn't been as stellar as you might think. I read an article recently that, if I recall correctly, pointed out that Belichick and Co don't have a tremendous record of picking superlative drafts.

A lot of their fans think Bill overvalues draft picks and undervalues contributing vets, fwiw. It's hard to argue with 5 Super Bowls of course, and easy to second guess in retrospect, but most of them believe they could have won more if they valued contributing vets a little more.

I think the takeaway, as always, is that Tom Brady covers a lot of sins.

You can look at the successfull teams and there's a lot more misses than hits it seems in the draft. The average first rounder only plays 4 years I saw so anything past that is good. But a lot of it goes into how a guy fits with a team. GB Pitt NE will have a few bad drafts then hit on a good one that helps them sustain themselves. I think our last 4 drafts have been our best in awhile and could with a solid piece here or there sustain us for awhile
