Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Greetings from BBQ to all in BGO land. Are you ready for fall to arrive with cooler weather and plenty of football? Before you know it training camp will be here and then a new season will unfold.

The 2017 offseason is in its final weeks and soon the Redskins will have a roster of fifty-three players and ten practice squad members.

We said a couple months ago that another 2018 mock would come if a new contract for Kirk Cousins was produced, but that did not happen. However, the dynamics have changed and Cousins is very unlikely to be here after 2017. With that in mind, we will still have a second 2018 mock today. Trying to anticipate many months in advance what the Redskins will do in that draft is certainly challenging. However, we will try to anticipate some circumstances and put forth our predictions.

Let’s get right to it.

Round One: Jarrett Stidham, QB, Auburn
The Redskins reluctantly move on from Kirk Cousins and find their signal caller of the future.

Round Two: Deon Cain, WR, Clemson
This highly underrated receiver has great speed and is a very reliable target. Easily averages more than fifteen yards a catch.

Round Three: Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest
The Redskins learned that picking a solid defensive end in the draft is a good thing.

Round Four: Wilson Bell, G, Florida St.
The 2018 class for guards is deep and plentiful. Bell is huge, strong, and powerful.

Round Five: Micah Kiser, ILB, Virginia
The Redskins venture down the road and find a good inside linebacker who can also play special teams.

Round Six: Kahlil McKenzie Jr., DT, Tennessee
While it is nice to have some great defensive ends, the front office finally realizes that having good, big bodies in the middle is important too.

Round Seven: Davin Bellamy, OLB, Georgia
He would be a project at edge and would likely contribute on special teams.

During the bye week this fall, we will have another mock. This list will change drastically by next winter. Or will it? Feel free to share your thoughts or post a 2018 mock. On to training camp.

See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Burner, I am ready to move on :)

And have been for the past year or so.

I could see where this was going on both sides and that to remain here the Redskins were going to have to give Cousins a deal that he simply couldn't refuse.

And that kind of a deal would limit what the team could do at other positions - and that is key here because Washington does not yet have a 53 man roster that is ready to win a championship outside of quarterback.

Draft the qb in Round 1. Treat him right from Day 1. Start McCoy in 2018 for the first 8-10 games and then let's get moving on the future.

BT, I don't know if we move on or stay the course. This way too early mock was more of a knee jerk reaction to the news of no ltd getting done. Time will tell.

Just wanted to let everyone know that in the final few weeks of this offseason blog we will have daily updates from camp, roster predictions, injury reports, free agency (this could happen if injuries occur), and general news.

The last entry to this blog will come just prior to the season. We will have our seasonal predictions.

Training camp is just three days away. Football returns!

Here are some updates as we get closer to training camp this week.

Rob Kelley is in much better shape than last season. He likes fast food a lot, but is now eating healthier.

If the Redskins keep six receivers on the roster of fifty-three, it could come down to rookie Robert Davis and veteran Brian Quick for that sixth spot.

BBQ believes that WRs Maurice Harris and Ryan Grant are locks to make the roster.

Junior Galette says that he is in the best shape of his life and is quicker than ever. Let's hope so.

DeAngelo Hall will be on the PUP list when camp opens. BBQ thinks he will eventually go to IR and miss what will be his final season in a Redskins uniform.

Houston Bates will be on the PUP list when camp opens.

Junior Galette would love to be a starter this season, but look for him to be in the lineup for pass situations only. He will be a pass rush specialist.

If Zach Brown masters the defense quickly, don't be surprised if Mason Foster moves to the Mike position and moves Will Compton to reserve status.

Many people thought Tress Way was a bit off last season as he averaged just over thirty-seven yards a punt over the first eight games. He averaged 40.5 in the second half of the season - a definite improvement.

Jordan Reed could become the best tight end this season if he remains healthy for the entire season according some in league circles.

Peter King thinks it is very possible that the Redskins will apply the $34M tag next year on Kirk Cousins. BBQ thinks it will be the $28M transition tag, but only if he has another good season.

Fabian Moreau and Montae Nicholson will likely start camp (and possibly the season) on the NFI list.

Don't count out DT Joey Mbu making the roster. At 6-3, 325 he has added about twenty pounds of muscle to his frame. At the very least, he is a lock for the practice squad.

Houston Bates (starting camp on the PUP list) is considered to be on the bubble, but he could earn a spot on the roster if Junior Galette stumbles again.

BBQ recommends that you keep an eye on the following players during this preseason: Martrell Spaight, Anthony Lanier, Keith Marshall, Joey Mbu, and Matt Jones (yes, he is still around).

Football analyst Pete Prisco of CBS says that Kirk Cousins is the most overrated player on the Redskins roster and Morgan Moses is the most underrated.

According to John Keim, players who need to step up in 2017 include Bashaud Breeland, Nate Sudfeld, Preston Smith, Ryan Grant, Josh Doctson, Rob Kelley, and Junior Galette.

The Redskins announced a new multi-year partnership with PepsiCo. Cans of Pepsi with the Redskins logo and bags of Tostitos with the same will appear in DC area stores this fall.

Interesting question for today. Should the Redskins put in a waiver claim for Lucky Whitehead?

I hope to have daily updates starting in a couple of days. I will be gone from August 17-22. So no reports from me at that time, but most of us here keep up with things anyway.

If Kurt was to mirror his stats from this year would you guys consider it tag worthy? Just curious

Unless there's some tampering rule that the FO is NOT allowed to talk turkey with KC's agent during season they need to gauge his interest in staying. I'm pretty convinced he wants out and don't agree with either tag. Let him go to Kyle and move on with an added 3rd (via comp).

Oh and fingers crossed Jr G stays fricken healthy all season.

All good points, BB. Just a couple of questions/observations.

Is Mo Harris a dark horse guy that steals looks over other obvious favorites? Overall, he looked pretty good last year on a small sample. He had 8 catches on 12 targets with 4 first downs (mostly early in the season). He was 8 of 12 but had zero drops. Did a couple of KO returns. Nothing earthshaking but maybe with a few more rep's can he help there?
Bates had his ACL tear late in the season so I doubt he gets much time in camp to evaluate. Start the year on the PUP or release? Maybe IR?
Zach Brown plays inside and outside - a very valuable commodity. If Compton gets pushed to reserve status, who takes over the defensive play calling?
I know this was released after your post but to update Whitehead's status - the Jets claimed him.

The OL doesn't have much depth in terms of guys with reps. Do you think they'll target some other players later on or do the Skins feel warm & fuzzy with who they have? I think it's a pretty big roll of the dice to go with as many UDFA's that they currently have backing up the line.

Which training camp battles will be most exciting to watch ?
I put it in this order (loosely, I might add)

ILB
NT
DE
OLB
RB
#2 CB
LG
TE backups
WR backups

IMO, Cravens and Swearinger seem pretty certain to lock up both safety positions, so I didn't include them. But anything could happen, and it could be interesting too, there.

Thursday:

Matt Jones could be on the Ravens watch list. With RB Kenneth Dixon out for the year, Baltimore could pursue a trade for Jones.

Fabian Moreau and Montae Nicholson won't be on PUP, but will be limited.

Preston Smith looks bigger and stronger, but he struggles against Trent Williams. Then again, everyone struggles against Trent Williams.

Bashaud Breeland has been getting beat regularly in the opening hours of training camp. Reports came out that he was ill on Thursday.

Josh Doctson is absolutely "lights out" fantastic thus far. He is drawing numerous rave reviews.

Trent Williams, Morgan Moses, and Ty Nsehke have been solid in 1 on 1s thus far.

Jonathan Allen is already proving to be a great first round selection. His training camp is off to a good start.

The offensive line stayed out after the second practice on Thursday and worked with Bill Callahan.

For a couple of minutes after the second practice on Thursday, Spencer Long tried his luck at the jugs machine. He struggled a bit with one handed catches and did well with two hands. BBQ believes that his career as a receiver simply won't happen.

If Kendall Fuller continues to have good days as he did on Thursday, he could be the opening day starter opposite Josh Norman.

Although he looked good after a two year absence, Junior Galette says that he was a bit rusty on Thursday and hopes to improve in the coming weeks.

Friday:

Ryan Anderson started off slow on Thursday, but according to Brian Mitchell the Alabama product progressed rapidly throughout the last couple of days.

Kendall Fuller continued to look very good on Friday.

The defense had a sluggish Thursday, but a much better Friday.

Colt McCoy struggled mightily on Friday. BBQ thinks the Nate Sudfeld watch is still very important.

Josh Norman likes the defensive philosophies under Greg Manusky much better than last year. He also likes the instruction from Torrian Gray.

Jordan Reed's absence could allow rookie Jeremy Sprinkle to have more reps and gain plenty of experience in the early days of camp.

With Josh Doctson looking very good on long routes his first two days, Rich Tandler thinks that the combo of Doctson, Pryor, and Crowder could be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Jordan Reed could be out until the third game of the preseason and possibly until the first game of the regular season.

If Keith Marshall can stay healthy, he could seriously push Mack Brown for a roster spot.

Joey Mbu has started camp as the first team DT. The competition at this position should be intense.

Kirk Cousins says that he is still adjusting to the height of Pryor and Doctson and expects to get the timing down very soon.

Maurice Harris tweaked his knee earlier today and is day to day.

Josh Holsey is starting to create a buzz in camp. Could Bashaud Breeland actually be in trouble of making the roster?

Free agent that is impressing coaches the most? D.J. Swearinger.

Coach who is drawing the most buzz in camp? Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.

It sure seems like the past few years of solid drafting is finally paying off. By solid I mean sound scouting and never, EVER, EVER, EVER, trade multiple picks for a player again.

Diligent research on UDFA's has been good lately too.

This is what I've been sayin multiple times this offseason. Don't count out 98

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Ioanndis just steam-rolled Kouandjio in 1-on-1 drill. 98 has gotten stronger in last year.</p>— Mike Jones (@MikeJonesWaPo) <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeJonesWaPo/status/891393174907834368">July 29, 2017</a></blockquote>

Nico Marley is a longshot for the roster, but he could be making a statement for placement on the practice squad with his spirited reps.

On Saturday, the team did a variation of the Oklahoma drill as running backs and wide receivers squared off against defensive players.

Injured players who are day to day are Maurice Harris (knee), Jamison Crowder (hamstring), Anthony Lanier (knee), and Derek Carrier (ankle).

The winds were very strong on Saturday and that wreaked havoc on the special teams reps.

Phil Taylor took first team reps at DT on Saturday.

Josh Doctson continues to look spectacular and is off to a great first few days of camp.

With Crowder sidelined, Ryan Grant worked with the first team.

Bashaud Breeland continues his struggles and has been very inconsistent thus far.

Wide receiver Brian Quick could be a surprise cut when the roster is trimmed to fifty-three. He has underwhelmed in OTAs and the first few days of camp.

Keith Marshall was injured late in practice as his cleats got stuck in the turf.

Matt Ioannidis is quietly having a good camp. He is clearly stronger than last year.

After a good first day, Nate Sudfeld has been struggling ever since.

D.J. Swearinger continues to have a solid camp and he is quickly becoming a team leader.

Robbie Duncan of Redskins Capital Connection is attending training camp and he believes that the tandem of Josh Doctson and Terrelle Pryor will be far better than Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.

Jordan Reed spent some time on the sidelines on Saturday working the jugs machine. He made a lot of one handed catches.

Although Phil Taylor is being given every chance to win the starting job at DT, he is off to a less than stellar start at training camp. His struggles are noticeable.

A late Sunday update: The injury to Keith Marshall is indeed serious. He will miss his second straight season. He will certainly go to IR and get another shot in 2018, but Marshall's injuries are adding up and he may never play in the NFL.

The team was off today and will resume practices tomorrow.

I think Matt got kinda screwed last season. He was asked to play NT but he did try that in college (due to other guys getting injured) and it didn't work well then. Expecting different results at the pro level in his first year was a real long shot so I really want to see him given a chance as an end - it's what he is.

Further back in posts on next years very early draft watch - does BB think they may go with a RT in the 6th or 7th? Moses is fine but not much depth there. Sure you could use Ty but he's also your backup LT. Maybe some other guy steps up between now & then but the position is rather thin at the moment.

Curious if Phil Taylor is struggling on his own or is the Long/Scherff combo that good?

I think we have enough younglings to cut bait with Breeland. Hasn't that Homer kid been stepping the eff up so far?

Hard to believe that given his development the past 2 years that Chris Thompson was actually waived by the Redskins and could have gone to any other teams.

He is now one of the better third down backs in the league.

Part of the reason the Redskins fell in the division from 2015 to 2016 was the lack of production from the 2016 picks out of the gate.

Doctson was hurt the entire season, Cravens was playing out of position at inside linebacker and struggled mightily at times. Then you throw in that Kendall Fuller was coming off knee surgery and wasn't 100%, and you are getting almost ZERO impact from your draft.

Compare that to Cowboys, Eagles and Giants that ALL hit on key contributors in the draft and in the case of the Giants took some risky but ultimately successful free agent moves to upgrade the roster.

The Redskins compared to these teams was standing still.

Yeah, something's amiss with Breeland. Its early on in camp but possible he could bounce back. Odds are against it I would imagine though.
