Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

The beating on Cousins gets a little old Ax. Of course he makes imperfect throws and his WRs help by making great catches - just like every other QB in the league (including future HOFers. You can't explain away his overall accuracy %'s and yardage records. Jackson is expendable. Garcon is far more essential. Jordan Reed and Crowder are more important than either of them.
Damn! A triple post! Now I KNOW you're beating on me. :)

I think Jackson is declining and is less critical than most, but that's a valid point regarding Doctson and Reed. But we can add insurance in free agency and the draft if either or both of them fail to be consistently available.
I agree that he seems to have lost a little zip. I just think his experience in the system, along with his ability to track down the long ball better than anyone on the team, makes up the difference. But, just like #8, if he wants ridiculous money, we let him walk. Even at the cost of hurting our starting QB. Even if just a little. If he's gone, Garcon is gone, Doctson is through (as you've predicted), and eggshell cracks his skull again, no FA or 2017 draft choice, and Crowder, can make that up. At least not early on.

In regards to Cousins you are changing the topic :). I agree, if Kirk wants a big money long-term contract he's got to improve (or we have to believe he's capable of further growth and improvement. I'm criticizing your characterization of him TO DATE as an inaccurate passer who is saved only by the amazing abilities of his WRs.
Talk about fake news. I'll assume the mischaracterization is for emphasis. That's fine. But it is not what I said.

That's patently false
Sure it is. Shame I didn't say it.
and also ignores the other side of the equation, how many great balls are dropped
Ignored nothing.
Ax said:
And yes, I know all QB's do it. Some more than others.
Ax said:
And yes, like all WR's, they dropped some easy ones too. But not many
Just didn't focus much on the obvious. Though come to think of it, all of the factors mentioned, yours below & mine, further illustrate the fault of statistics accuracy.

how many times he has to rush a throw because of pressure, how many times WRs run the wrong or an imprecise route. Those are also all factors related to accuracy that I never see you reference. Cousins is a damn accurate passer - he just is. We can agree to disagree as usual.
He is more accurate, statistically, than he is, actually. In my humble, yet ugly, opinion.
Worthy of a contract that puts him somewhere in the 7-10 top QB's range. They can always throw in incentives for WINNING the NFC Championship, and/or the SB.

BB, you mentioned 2 that could be day one starters.
Any others that could start day one, or any that could become starters mid-season ?

Any of them could start on day one, but that is not likely. The beauty of any draft is that a first rounder could be a colossal bust (Josh Doctson?) or a sixth rounder could go on to set a single season team rushing record (Alfred Morris).

You just never, ever know for sure.

@Burgundy Burner - thanks so much for posting these mock drafts. They give me great insight to players that I know little or nothing about. Appreciate your hard work and dedication.

And what values for that range do you use? The current value of the top 7-10 QB's contracts is below market for qb's of similar skill who would be signing a new contract today. So even if his contract is at the higher end of current contracts, it is only reflective of the current market. The Cap has significantly increased the last 4 years, contracts have risen to absorb it. Kirk is worth exactly what the market is willing to pay today. If that makes him close to the highest paid QB in current contracts, that is not an indicator that teams think he's as good as a Brady, or Rodgers etc..... With the cap increases and cap space, this team can pay him market value with no impact to improving other areas of the team moving forward IMO.

I understand all that, my friend.

But since I'm not a front office cap specialist, it's not my main concern. All top athletes are overpaid. I get that too.

#8 had a salary last season that ranked him, #8 in total cash, according to spotrac.
NFL Salary Rankings | Spotrac
So, including career accomplishments, to date, and his 2016 performance, he ultimately didn't earn it, as far as I'm concerned. So I see nothing to warrant paying him even more. The overpayment last season made up for his underpayment in 2015. So it wasn't a total waste.
He should remain at the 7-10 slot in total cash, at best.
Market be damned.

Market be damned?

That's a fine message-board stance, brother, but untenable in the NFL. Teams don't have the luxury of expecting to land quality players for below market value. That's fantasy land. If the front office takes that approach with Kirk it will indicate they believe, as you do, that he's not a viable long-term starter, and they're planning to roll the dice on finding another competent QB and getting him up to speed quickly enough to win out of the gate this September.

My personal opinion? If they pay him market value, they're recognizing at long long last the reality of how hard it is to find competent quarterback in this league.

Yes sir. Market be damned. When it comes to my own personal opinion of worth. And that's all it is, a message board stance.

I realize I'm barking at the moon. I know I must accept that the "market" will dictate the pay scale.
Doesn't mean I have to like it, does it?
Doesn't mean I can't have an opinion about it, does it?
Doesn't mean I need a single soul to agree with me, does it?

It also doesn't mean I need an education about how things work.

But it's all good. I don't need a safe space. I'm not gonna smash out any store front windows if they overpay, in advance, for services yet to be rendered.

Take it easy. BGO welcomes all opinions. Even untenable ones. :)

Take it easy. BGO welcomes all opinions. Even untenable ones. :)
Of course BGO welcomes all opinions. That's obvious. And I certainly don't need to explain that to you.

Just as I didn't need people to explain to me how the market works in the NFL. As if I didn't know.

Now, we've both had to state the obvious. And I feel much better. :)

You da man, Ax. I know it's important to ya, so feel free to have the last ...

Kirk's contract is going to have little or nothing to do with market price by ranking.
It's about Supply and Demand.
He will be overpaid due to the huge lack of supply of quality alternatives at his position.
We don't have the luxury of insisting he get paid only according to where he is "slotted" among top QB's.

FA QBs this year is a choice between a douche and a turd outside of Cousins. The current Market Value projection for a new contract for Kirk per Spotrac is 4 yrs/average salary $23.6M/$95M total. That's good for #4 salary for QBs. (link: Kirk Cousins Contract Details, Salary Cap Breakdowns, Salaries, Bonuses | Spotrac)
Will some team out there pay him that? Without a doubt. 49er's have 4 QBs and they're willing to part ways with all of them plus they have $20M more in cap space than the Skins. Just an example, whether or not they're willing to do so is another story but they are certainly in the position to do so.

A tag on Cousins this year is $23.9M so $300K is really loose change compared to the projected contract and he'd still be #4 in QB salary this year. With a contract they could spread the cap hit instead of eating the $24M in one year with the tag but obviously more years involved with a contract. They won't tag him for a 3rd year because the penalty rises dramatically. For Kirk, that would be a 144% pay raise ($34.5M) for the one year tag. So he'd be playing elsewhere next year without a major contract with Washington. Tag & trade? They don't have a long term QB waiting in the wings so they would have to trade for a guy that can come in and play and fit Washington's offense and a guy that would be a FA in a year or two (otherwise the other team probably doesn't take a deal). Stafford or Bradford? They're gonna be $20M+ (average) next year anyway. Carr? He'll get the same average as Cousins just more years next year. Whether or not you like those choices isn't the point - the point is that is pretty much the pool you have to draw from.

Try a draft pick? Granted Scot is a great judge of talent but getting a QB that could start over the next year or two, considering their draft spot, is a huge roll of the dice. Man, there just isn't much coming out over the next year or two that they could get without trading up who can do that and I don't see the Skins doing worse than 8-8 this year without a complete implosion whether it be Kirk or Colt at the helm.

Cousins said he's willing to play under the tag this year. He'd probably get a better deal next year if he did- unless he goes massively downhill. I think he pretty much has the Redskins by the short hairs at this point although I can still see an argument to be made for the tag including more time to hammer out a deal. I know that their are those here that think he deserves a billion dollars plus think it's unfair to compare him to elite (win playoff games and SB's) QBs - they just want to pay him like one even though he hasn't won a playoff game (yet) but if he has reached his peak maybe a 4 or 5 year contract is a mistake so it's a gamble either way. The Skins would like a contract (if that's their choice) that they could walk away from in the 3rd year or so but if I were Kirk's agent, I'd be holding out for $70M to $75M guaranteed. Puts him at #2 guaranteed money and puts him at about #18 in % of guaranteed cash. And a tag puts him at $24M guaranteed this year.

Baker - projected by Spotrac (link: Chris Baker Contract Details, Salary Cap Breakdowns, Salaries, Bonuses | Spotrac)at 4 yrs/$7.4M average/$30M total. Good deal unless they could get Branch at about that price. A couple of FAs ahead of him stat wise over - 30 - not worth the extra 3 or 4 million a year and not worth 4+ years.

Offseason Updates:
Torrian Gray has been hired as the new DB coach. He was the DB coach at Florida and Virginia Tech. Many of his former players are in the league and several are expected to be drafted (some highly) in 2017.

There are some schools of thought (with Redskins pundits and players) that center on Anthony Lanier becoming a good player in the mold of Lorenzo Alexander, but even better.

It is possible that the Redskins could make a run at Eagles DT Bennie Logan in free agency.

Expect Morgan Moses to get a contract extension in the offseason.

There continues to be a growing chorus of insiders and pundits who think Bashaud Breeland could be moving to free safety.

It’s possible that Spencer Long will receive a contract extension this offseason.

There seems to be a strong interest on both sides for impending free agent receiver Kenny Britt. However, two other teams seem interested. If it happens, look for a deal to get done on the first day of free agency.

Personal Thoughts:
My likely to be released list includes DeAngelo Hall and Kory Lichtensteiger.

I also think it is possible that the team moves on from Niles Paul. I would prefer to keep him, but this is just a wildcard feeling.

If the team cuts ties with DeAngelo Hall, BBQ wouldn’t mind seeing him in a front office role.

Hail To The Redskins!

Besides college stints, Torrian Gray was an assistant DB coach with the Bears from 2004 to 2005. Da Bears were going through a DB coach a year back then so for him to last 2 years was pretty good. 2004 Bears went 5-11 with a coaching staff that had little to no NFL experience. 17 coaches; 38 years experience; Smith had 8 years and DB coach Vance Bedford had 5 years. That leaves a whole lot of guys they got right from college teams.

2005 DB coach was, Perry Fewell and the Bears moved up to 11-5. Passing Defense was about average in 2004 but top 5 in 2005 (enter Tillman). In 2006 they went to the SB with yet another DB coach, Steven Wilks. Not too sure why they moved from Fewell to Wilks but Ron Rivera was the DC at the time so maybe it was an association between Rivera & Wilks. Wilks was fired from Chicago in 2008 but was hired on by Rivera in SD in 2009.

Anyway, Torrian has some limited exposure to the NFL even if only as an assistant on a team that had a good pass D and maybe some of what he did in those two years attributed to Chi-town going to 13-3 the year after he left. They crashed to 7-9 in 2007 and their pass D dropped off sharply.

Fewell went on to be a DC from 2006-2014 (Bills, NYG) before going back to a DB coach in Washington so maybe some animosity about being passed over for DC in DC. Still, somewhat ironic that Fewell gets replaced by his former assistant. Then again, it's a small world and shrinking all the time.

The 2017 NFL offseason is officially here. With the first day of no football, BBQ will take a look at intriguing free agent targets for the Redskins. While we don’t officially list them in the regular periodical free agency updates, we simply want to list some players of note.

Will the Redskins sign any of them? Possibly. It will depend on who the team retains, releases, re-signs, or declines to re-sign. We are listing this group only once (today) and the team interest – or lack thereof.

Let’s take a look at the players.

Quarterbacks:
None

Running Backs:
Latavius Murray, Raiders – Could he do better in a new system? Probably not. Team interest: Very likely not.

Wide Receivers:
Kenny Britt, Rams – There seems to be mutual interest. Had his best year thus far. Team interest: Very possible.
Robert Woods, Bills – The potential is there. Played in a quarterback-challenged system. Still very young. Team interest: Maybe.
Cordarrelle Patterson, Vikings – Has never lived up to his billing. Team interest: Not likely.

Tight Ends:
None

Tackles:
None

Guards:
Luke Joeckel, Jaguars – Hasn’t lived up to the hype. Can he turn it around? Redskins interest: Highly unlikely.

Centers:
None

Defensive Tackles:
Dontari Poe, Chiefs – Huge presence in the middle. Redskins interest: Probably too expensive.
Bennie Logan, Eagles – Good, steady player. Reliable. Redskins interest: Reported to be a target.

Defensive Ends:
Chandler Jones, Cardinals – Young and talented. Would fill a huge need. Redskins interest: Way too expensive.

Inside Linebackers:
Gerald Hodges, 49ers – Would be a substantial upgrade. Redskins interest: Not likely.

Outside Linebackers:
None.

Cornerbacks:
Prince Amukamara, Jaguars – Had a good 2016. Would be very affordable. Redskins interest: A longshot maybe.
Dre Kirkpatrick, Bengals – Hasn’t lived up to his potential. Redskins interest: Probably not.

Safeties:
Eric Berry, Chiefs – Elite talent. Redskins interest: Only if there was no salary cap.
D.J. Swearinger, Cardinals – Had a good 2016 and could be a bargain signing. Redskins interest: None reported, but it is a team need.

Special Teams:
None

Earlier today I finally got a hold of this drafting situation - and I was still wrong until a short time ago. Yes, the Redskins do not have a seventh round selection.

However, the Derek Carrier trade and his lack of playing time in 2016 changed everything.

Instead of losing a fifth rounder, the Redskins now give up their seventh round choice to the 49ers.

And yes, the Redskins have two fifth round selections (and two in the fourth and sixth rounds). We will not have another edited mock, just two in the month of February now instead of one.

Sorry for all of the confusion.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017(Continual Updates)

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.

Note: With the revelation of new information regarding the draft picks this year, we will have a mock today and a mock in two weeks. It was discovered that the Redskins have two fifth round selections and no seventh round choice. With that in mind, BBQ has elected to bring you two extra mocks this month, including today.

Today we bring you the third mock of the 2017 offseason and it features nine draft choices. After free agency begins, the frequency of mocks will increase as players are re-signed and added from other teams. During the week of the draft, we will have a mock each day. Please keep in mind that the early mocks will likely look much different than the final mocks. Many factors will dictate those changes. Along the way we will feature mocks that have trades. Too, we will not be featuring mocks that have a trade involving Kirk Cousins – only if and when that actually happens.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note that we will continually post throughout the mocking process: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of Scot McCloughan and see what he will do.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the third mock for 2017.

Team Needs:
Free Safety
Defensive Line
Wide Receiver
Inside Linebacker
Left Guard
Running Back

Round One: Chris Wormley, DE/DT, Michigan
The Redskins waste no time in repairing the defensive line and grab the All-Big Ten defensive lineman. The commitment to the line is real and genuine. Wormley is tenacious and very consistent – rarely makes mistakes. Extremely intelligent. He is a 3-Tech who will probably line up on the outside on most plays, but will kick to the inside at times. Very disruptive in the running game and gets occasional pressure on the quarterback. Probably needs to add about ten pounds of bulk and muscle. A dedicated team player.
Other Possible Targets:
Zach Cunningham, ILB, Vanderbilt
Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford
Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama
Jamal Adams, SS/FS, LSU
Malik McDowell, DE, Michigan St.
O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama

Round Two: Budda Baker, FS, Washington
The first name just screams “Football Player”, but Baker is a very talented free safety and possesses superior speed. The All-PAC-12 performer can cover large swaths of the football field and is tenacious in coverage. Plays with unending confidence. A bit of a liability in the running game, but his quickness makes up for that skillset. Can focus in on receivers and stay with them step for step. Needs to improve his tackling and should do so with good coaching. A natural free safety.
Other Possible Targets:
D'Onta Foreman, RB, Texas
Caleb Brantley, DT, Florida
Raekwon McMillan, ILB, Ohio St.
Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
Cooper Kupp, WR, Eastern Washington
T.J. Watt, ILB/OLB, Wisconsin

Round Three: Anthony Walker, ILB, Northwestern
There are several inside linebackers who garner more attention, but Walker comes from a Big Ten program that receives lesser attention. Couple that with him being something of a sleeper prospect and it is not surprising to learn that he is rated a bit lower. But Walker should be rated higher and could be a starter on day one. Has extreme quickness – gets to the quarterback quickly and limits running backs coming out of the backfield. Would need to improve his coverage skills, but is very intelligent and a quick learner.
Other Possible Targets:
Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson
Forrest Lamp, OT/G, Western Kentucky
Alvin Kamara, RB, Tennessee
Kendell Beckwith, ILB, LSU
Wayne Gallman, RB, Clemson
Obi Melifonwu, SS, Connecticut

Round Four: Jarron Jones, DE/DT, Notre Dame
Jones is a productive force at defensive tackle and end. He has superb athleticism for a man his size and figures to play more at the end, but could slide inside at times. Jones has the potential to dominate offensive linemen when he is in a groove and can live in the backfield. The ACC (Affiliated) standout uses his length to block passes and possesses a respectable pass rush.
Other Possible Targets:
Bucky Hodges, TE, Virginia Tech
Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M
Elijah Qualls, DT, Washington
Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan
Jaleel Johnson, DE, Iowa
Brendan Langley, CB, Lamar
Charles Walker, DE/DT, Oklahoma
Jake Butt, TE, Michigan

Round Four: Ryan Glasgow, DE/DT, Michigan
The world as we know it may end if Scot McCloughan drafts three defensive linemen in 2017. The Redskins GM wastes little time in trying to improve the defensive line and the Big Ten defensive lineman completes an overhaul. Glasgow, the younger brother of Detroit offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, is a relentless defender who can play tackle and end interchangeably. With a humble attitude, the Wolverine takes a simple blue collar approach to the game and does his job. Dominant in the run game and is an effective pass rusher.

Round Five: Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma
Ray Rice saw his career end with a fist to the face of his wife on an elevator. It was brutal. Joe Mixon slapped a young woman over two years ago and the tape is also brutal. Does the young man deserve a chance? It could be a question that Scot McCloughan is willing to answer and do so in the affirmative. No one questions the elite talent that is Joe Mixon. The Big Twelve dynamo is electric and powerful at the same time. If he can assure the Redskins GM that lack of maturity is no longer an issue, then Mixon is a major steal here.
Other Possible Targets:
Kyle Fuller, C, Baylor
Marquez White, CB, Florida St.
Nico Siragusa, G, San Diego St.
Haason Reddick, ILB/OLB, Temple
Taylor Moton, G/OT, Western Michigan
Montravius Adams, DT, Auburn
Eddie Jackson, SS, Alabama
De’Veon Smith, RB, Michigan

Round Five: Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
Looking for another steal in the fifth round? Look no further than the tight end from the Razorbacks of the SEC. Sprinkle is very underrated and will likely be a reliable target and a solid blocker. Six concussions (Jordan Reed) can’t be understated. Sprinkle is great insurance. He played in a system that did not allow huge numbers, but was able to display skills that translate to the next level.

Round Six: Jordan Morgan, G, Kutztown
Kutztown University is located in Pennsylvania. It’s in the PSAC - Division II. As far as anyone knows, they haven’t produced a decent MLB left fielder in 2,000 years. Offensive guards in football? That’s about to change. Jordan Morgan has gone from an obscured football existence to a true prospect in the NFL. He has the size. He has the athleticism. He has the strength. He has the pass protection. He has the holes created for the running game. Will likely need a year to adjust to the pros, but could be a multi-year starter.
Other Possible Targets:
Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
Ahkello Stribling, CB, Colorado
Cole Hikutini, TE, Louisville
Jay Guillermo, G/C, Clemson
John Johnson, FS, Boston College
Travis Tuiloma, DE, BYU
C.J. Beathard, QB, Iowa
Eddie Vanderdoes, DT/DE, UCLA

Round Six: Josh Augusta, DT, Missouri
There are zero mountainous peaks in the state of Missouri. Wait! Our mistake. Josh Augusta qualifies as a mountainous peak and is an intriguing player in this year’s draft. He’s raw, but the SEC prospect from the Tigers could be an interesting selection here. He has lost some weight (currently 6-4, 355) and is working on his conditioning. Played well in the final two-thirds of 2016 and had a steady, somewhat unspectacular career in college. Played well at the Senior Bowl - scouts claimed the weight loss helped – and continued conditioning may yield even better results. A run stuffer. Likely needs two years before becoming a rotational player at the next level.

Undrafted Free Agent Prospects:
Channing Stribling, CB, Michigan
Jordan Evans, ILB, Oklahoma
Jamari Staples, WR, Louisville
Matt Elam, DT, Kentucky
Cam Keizur, C, Portland St.
Adam Griffith, K, Alabama
Elijah McGuire, RB, Louisiana-Lafayette
Christian LaCouture, DT, LSU
Kai Nacua, FS, BYU
Patrick Towles, QB, Boston College
Johnny Mundt, TE, Oregon
Tanner Gentry, WR, Wyoming
