Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017(Continual Updates)
Greetings from BBQ to all in BGO land.
Today we bring you the latest mock as we get closer to the draft of 2017. The big event occurs in less than three weeks and the roster will be full of new prospects before you know it.
The frequency of mocks will increase each week. Next week we will feature three mocks and the following week will bring four. During the week of the draft, we will have a mock each day. Along the way we will feature mocks that have trades (including today). Too, we will not be featuring mocks that have a trade involving Kirk Cousins – only if and when that actually happens.
Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d love to see your mocks if you are so inclined.
An extra note that we will continually post throughout the mocking process: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do. It’s not an easy task, but we’ll try to do our best.
Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2017.
Team Needs:
Free Safety
Defensive Line
Wide Receiver
Inside Linebacker
Left Guard
Running Back
Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down in round one to the very latter stages and pick up a second and fourth rounder.
Round One: Malik McDowell, DE, Michigan St.
The commitment to the defensive line this offseason is real and totally obvious. With a new defensive line coach, the Redskins are placing a new emphasis on the front seven. The All-Big Ten stud is a powerful force who is a major disruption for opposing quarterbacks and running backs alike. Although he could play inside for a few snaps each game, his greatest potential is likely at end. There are a couple of concerns about his work ethic, but those fears are somewhat overblown and he could shine with Jim Tomsula as his position coach. McDowell recently added fifteen pounds of muscle and his measurements are now 6-6, 295.
Other Possible Targets:
Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
Tre’Davious White, CB, LSU
O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
Haason Reddick, ILB/OLB, Temple
John Ross, WR, Washington
Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
Round Two: Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma
Ray Rice saw his career end for a fist to the face of his wife on an elevator. It was brutal. Joe Mixon slapped a young woman over two years ago and the tape is also brutal. Does the young man deserve a chance? It could be a question that the Redskins front office is willing to answer and do so in the affirmative. No one questions the elite talent that is Joe Mixon. The Sooner is a true first round talent – possibly the second best running back in the 2017 class. The Big 12 dynamo is electric and powerful at the same time. If he can assure the Redskins that lack of maturity is no longer an issue, then Mixon is a major steal here.
Other Possible Targets:
Justin Evans, FS/SS, Texas A&M
Kevin King, CB, Washington
Obi Melifonwu, SS, Connecticut
Adoree Jackson, CB, Southern California
Budda Baker, FS, Washington
Chris Wormley, DE/DT, Michigan
Round Two: Adam Shaheen, TE, Ashland
Ok, who is Adam Shaheen? He’s a tight end from Ashland. Ok, does Ashland have a football team? Yes, they do have a football team. Ok, where in the world is Ashland? It’s in Ohio – we think. The team is known as the Eagles – we think. They are in the GLIAC – we think. It’s a mouthful. What we do know is that Shaheen switched from basketball to football last year. He put up excellent numbers. He is a great blocker. Runs a 4.5 forty. He’s a freakish athlete. Could have a career that is equal to or better than Rob Gronkowski. Oh, and he goes 6-7, 280. Let that sink in for a bit.
Round Three: Cooper Kupp. WR, Eastern Washington
While many pundits and fans think the Redskins are set a wide receiver, nothing could be further from the truth. They could lose two key receivers next offseason (Terrelle Pryor, Brian Quick) and taking one here makes sense. Even if both players are re-signed, this still makes a lot of sense. Besides, having plenty of good receivers in Jay Gruden’s pass happy offense is not a bad thing. The knock on Kupp is that he is slow, but proved the naysayers wrong with good 40 times over the last couple of months. Very dependable receiver. Excellent route runner.
Other Possible Targets:
Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson
Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
D'Onta Foreman, RB, Texas
Anthony Walker, ILB, Northwestern
Montravius Adams, DT/DE, Auburn
Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
Raekwon McMillan, ILB, Ohio St.
Brad Kaaya, QB, Miami
Round Four: Brendan Langley, CB, Lamar
As one of the better athletes to come out of the Southland Conference this season, Langley is a tough defender with genuine football intelligence. Started his collegiate career at the University of Georgia and was moved to safety out of necessity (injuries to other players). Feeling that corner was still his natural position, he transferred to Lamar and had an impressive career with the Cardinals. Good size, solid speed, nose for the football, excellent defender.
Other Possible Targets:
Bucky Hodges, TE, Virginia Tech
Kendell Beckwith, ILB, LSU
Dalvin Tomlinson, DT/DE, Alabama
Elijah Qualls, DT, Washington
Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M
Vincent Taylor, DE, Oklahoma St.
Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
Round Four: Isaac Asiata, G, Utah
This very strong and powerfully built guard could be a target for the Redskins. Asiata has played tackle and center, but mostly out of necessity due to injuries along the Utes offensive line. The PAC 12 lineman has the prototypical size to play inside and left guard is his natural position. Excellent in the rushing offense, but will need some work in the pass protection schemes. This four year starter could crack the starting lineup by mid-season, maybe sooner.
Round Four: Ryan Glasgow, DE/DT, Michigan
The Redskins decide to snatch another defensive lineman in this round as they waste little time in trying to improve the defensive line. The Big Ten defensive lineman adds to an overhaul. Glasgow, the younger brother of Detroit offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, is a relentless defender who can play tackle and end interchangeably. With a humble attitude, the Wolverine takes a simple blue collar approach to the game and does his job. Dominant in the run game and is an effective pass rusher.
Round Five: Nico Siragusa, G, San Diego St.
At 6-5 and 330 pounds, Nico Siragusa obviously has the size to play on the line and he also has the talent. The long term starter for the Aztecs is not related to that other Siragusa, but he could forge a solid career in the NFL. The MWC product is powerfully strong and helps to open big holes for running backs. Struggles a bit with pass protection and will likely need a year to learn and perfect those techniques – as such, he is very teachable and a good teammate. Would provide excellent depth to the line.
Other Possible Targets:
Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
Charles Walker, DE/DT, Oklahoma
John Johnson, FS, Boston College
Jarron Jones, DE/DT, Notre Dame
Nico Siragusa, G, San Diego St.
Taylor Moton, G/OT, Western Michigan
Eddie Vanderdoes, DT/DE, UCLA
Round Six: Josh Tupou, DT, Colorado
There are some humongous, towering, massive mountains in Colorado – Telluride, Pikes Peak, Mount Elbert, Crestone Peak, Josh Tupou. He’s big! He eats only one meal a day – it last about eight hours. Ok, enough of the lame one liners. Let’s get to the obvious – Very strong. Plays with a passion. Good at the point of attack. Handles double teams with ease. A major cog in the middle. Excels in the rushing defense. Provides a decent pass rush. Can play in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 defense. At 6-3 and 355, the PAC 12 standout can actually run a 5.3 forty. A true Buffalo indeed.
Other Possible Targets:
Jordan Morgan, G, Kutztown
Ahkello Stribling, CB, Colorado
Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan
Jordan Evans, ILB, Oklahoma
C.J. Beathard, QB, Iowa
Richie Brown, OLB/ILB, Mississippi St.
Round Six: Jay Guillermo, G/C, Clemson
Jay Guillermo is versatile and can play either guard or center. That’s a good reason for the Redskins to take a flyer on him. Also, there is a need to have a backup at center. He would be drafted for depth purposes, but could actually be a starter within a year or two. The ACC lineman has the massive size that is favored in the NFL for inside positions on the offensive line. Good pass protector, but would need to work on the running game.
Round Seven: Tyrique Jarrett, DT, Pittsburgh
The Redskins continue their commitment to stocking defensive linemen in 2017. Jarrett will need time to develop, but the All-ACC standout from Pitt would be a good addition late in the draft. Clogs up the middle very well. Would be solid in the running game, but does not bring much of a pass rush. Needs to develop a little more of a mean streak. . Good attitude and dedicated teammate. Could develop into a fine rotational player in the next year or two.
Other Possible Targets:
James Quick, WR, Louisville
Ben Boulware, ILB, Clemson
Pharaoh Brown, TE, Oregon
Elijah Hood, RB, North Carolina
Ben Braden, G, Michigan
Hardy Nickerson, ILB, Illinois
Ricky Seals-Jones, WR, Texas A&M
Round Seven: David Jones, FS, Richmond
David Jones is a really special athlete. He was selected the preseason defensive player of the year in the CAA, but an early season injury derailed part of his senior season. He returned a few weeks later and was still able to capture second team All-American honors. Last summer, Jones was projected as a second or third rounder and considered to be one of the top five free safeties available in the 2017 draft. If the Redskins are looking for a major steal, Jones would fit that profile. Decent speed. A special teams standout. Goes 6-3, 215. Plays the middle of the field like a boss. Wins/bats away “jump” balls consistently. Excellent attitude. Diligent student of the game. Graduated early (December).
