Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Good to know that BBQ is not alone. Ben Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson are reviewing their final mocks for the upcoming week. Nailbiters for sure.

"Gentlemen, I have heard Aaron Burr wanted to submit his mock but Alexander Hamilton shot him down. What? Too soon??"

You can take Caleb Brantley out of the mix, unless it's as an undrafted free agent.

Go Gators!

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.

Today we bring you the latest mock as we get closer to the draft of 2017 and it features ten draft choices. The roster will be full of new prospects before you know it.

The NFL draft arrives in just three days! This week we are featuring four mocks – today, Tuesday, and two on Wednesday. On Thursday BBQ will bring you a list of first round possibilities. For Friday, we will do the same for rounds two and three. Saturday features players who could be targets in rounds four through seven. We will not be featuring mocks that have a trade involving Kirk Cousins – only if and when that actually happens.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

An extra note that we will continually post throughout the mocking process: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do. It’s not an easy task, but we’ll try to do our best.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2017.

Team Needs:
Free Safety
Defensive Line
Inside Linebacker
Left Guard
Running Back

Round One: Haason Reddick, OLB/ILB, Temple
With Junior Galette being another possible injury concern along with character issues and the sophomore slump of Preston Smith, it could make sense to add an edge rusher. Enter Haason Reddick of the AAC. The Owl could excel on the edge in certain packages, but his size means he would likely move to the inside at the next level. Good speed – can get to the quarterback quickly. Rapidly closes on running backs hitting the open field. Covers tight ends and slot receivers effectively. Would likely become a fan favorite quickly. Could be a better prospect at ILB than Reuben Foster – a player that now has a failed drug test and character concerns.
Other Possible Targets:
Forrest Lamp, OT/G, Western Kentucky
Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama
Malik McDowell, DE, Michigan St.
Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio St.
Derek Barnett, OLB/DE, Tennessee

Round Two: Adoree Jackson, CB, Southern California
The quality of wide receivers in the NFC-East has grown significantly over the last few seasons and it would be a good idea to take a quality corner here. The PAC 12 dynamo is an electrifying player and is arguably one of the best corners in the draft. He also had a fantastic career as a kick/punt returner for the Trojans. Lightning fast – can jump routes with ease. Can also play wide receiver on occasion and effectively so. Does has issues with taller receivers and can get beat on jump balls. Passionate player. Former teammate of Su’a Cravens.
Other Possible Targets:
Justin Evans, FS/SS, Texas A&M
Chris Wormley, DE/DT, Michigan
Kevin King, CB, Washington
Budda Baker, FS, Washington
Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma
Raekwon McMillan, ILB, Ohio St.
Adam Shaheen, TE, Ashland

Round Three: Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
The Redskins continue their offseason transformation of the defensive line as they are looking to draft defensive linemen in 2017. While TV announcers could have a fun time trying to pronounce his name, Kpassagnon, a CAA standout, has impressive size (6-7, 280) to go along with impressive skills. In 2016 alone he had twenty-one tackles for a loss and eleven sacks for the Wildcats. Swats passes down with considerable ease. Deceptively quick. Could be a surprise starter his first season, but at the very least he figures to be in the defensive rotation early on and quite often in 2017.
Other Possible Targets:
Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson
D'Onta Foreman, RB, Texas
Anthony Walker, ILB, Northwestern
Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
Cooper Kupp, WR, Eastern Washington
Nate Peterman, QB, Pittsburgh
Montravius Adams, DT/DE, Auburn

Round Four: Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
The Redskins can’t ignore six concussions to Jordan Reed and he could be one hit away from a career ending injury. Vernon Davis is not a starter and Niles Paul is more of a special teams ace. Enter Jake Butt of the Big Ten’s Wolverines. He was originally rated as one of the draft’s best tight ends, but an unfortunate injury in their bowl game likely means that he won’t be selected early on. He also may not be ready at the very start of the season. However, Butt could still have a solid rookie season. Dependable pass catcher. Great red zone target. Excellent football smarts. Good blocker.
Other Possible Targets:
Vincent Taylor, DE, Oklahoma St.
Isaac Asiata, G, Utah
Ryan Glasgow, DE/DT, Michigan
Brendan Langley, CB, Lamar
Elijah Qualls, DT, Washington
Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M
Trey Hendrickson, OLB, Florida Atlantic

Round Four: Dalvin Tomlinson, DT/DE, Alabama
The Redskins continue to rebuild their defensive line and look to the Crimson Tide – that perennial powerhouse of the SEC. They produce a lot of talent and Dalvin Tomlinson is another one of their great prospects. His specialty is run stuffing, but he became a better pass rusher later in the 2016 season. He won’t get a lot of sacks, but will bat plenty of passes down. Solid player who gladly puts team goals ahead of his own. Very intelligent. Needs to develop a little bit more of a mean streak attitude. His upside potential is possibly unlimited.

Round Five: Taylor Moton, G/OT, Western Michigan
The Redskins need a long term solution at left guard and Taylor Moton could fill that need. The All MAC lineman has the versatility to play tackle, but his size and potential is likely on the inside. The Broncos started him on the right side, but he has the ability to shift to left guard. Excellent in pass protection. Solid in opening holes for the running back. Goes 6-5 and a powerful 330 lbs. Could start by mid-season or possibly by the opening game of 2017.
Other Possible Targets:
Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
Charles Walker, DE/DT, Oklahoma
Nico Siragusa, G, San Diego St.
Jarron Jones, DE/DT, Notre Dame
John Johnson, FS, Boston College
DeDe Westbrook, WR, Oklahoma
Eddie Vanderdoes, DT/DE, UCLA

Round Six: Josh Tupou, DT, Colorado
There are some humongous, towering, massive mountains in Colorado – Telluride, Pikes Peak, Mount Elbert, Crestone Peak, Josh Tupou. He’s big! He eats only one meal a day – it last about eight hours. Ok, enough of the lame one liners. Let’s get to the obvious – Very strong. Plays with a passion. Good at the point of attack. Handles double teams with ease. A major cog in the middle. Excels in the rushing defense. Provides a decent pass rush. Can play in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 defense. At 6-3 and 355, the PAC 12 standout can actually run a 5.3 forty. A true Buffalo indeed.
Other Possible Targets:
Delano Hill, SS/FS, Michigan
Jordan Morgan, G, Kutztown
Josh Augusta, DT, Missouri
Jordan Evans, ILB, Oklahoma
Jamari Staples, WR, Louisville
C.J. Beathard, QB, Iowa
Richie Brown, OLB/ILB, Mississippi St.

Round Six: Jay Guillermo, G/C, Clemson
Jay Guillermo is versatile and can play either guard or center. That’s a good reason for the Redskins to take a flyer on him. Also, there is a need to have a backup at center. He would be drafted for depth purposes, but could actually be a starter within a year or two. The ACC lineman has the massive size that is favored in the NFL for inside positions on the offensive line. Good pass protector, but would need to work on the running game.

Round Seven: David Jones, FS, Richmond
David Jones is a really special athlete. He was selected the preseason defensive player in the CAA, but an early season injury derailed part of his senior season. He returned a few weeks later and was still able to capture second team All-American honors. Last summer, Jones was projected as a second or third rounder and considered to be one of the top five free safeties available in the 2017 draft. If the Redskins are looking for a major steal, Jones would fit that profile. Decent speed. A special teams standout. Goes 6-3, 215. Plays the middle of the field like a boss. Wins “jump” balls consistently. Excellent attitude. Diligent student of the game. Graduated early (December).
Other Possible Targets:
Pharaoh Brown, TE, Oregon
Tyrique Jarrett, DT, Pittsburgh
Ben Boulware, ILB, Clemson
Ricky Seals-Jones, WR, Texas A&M
Elijah Hood, RB, North Carolina
Dylan Donahue, OLB, West Georgia
James Quick, WR, Louisville
Ben Braden, G, Michigan
Hardy Nickerson, ILB, Illinois

Round Seven: Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan
The Redskins add a very talented and highly underrated receiver from the Big Ten. The system Jehu Chesson was in for the Wolverines limited his receptions, but his overall talent probably yields many more catches in a friendlier offense. He will likely need a year to learn the nuances of a Jay Gruden offense, but could contribute some meaningful minutes in the latter part of his rookie season. However, his overall talent could have him on the field a bit sooner. Will need to show some special teams skills as well.

There is your latest mock for 2017 and prospect lists. The draft is almost here. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Pick 12. The Browns are on the clock.

Goodell, "We have a trade."

The Cleveland Browns trade the #12 pick, and their first pick in the 2nd round (33), for QB Kirk Cousins.

With the #12 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select Mitch Trubisky, QB North Carolina
With #17 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select Christian McCaffrey, RB Stanford

I'm going to be pissed if we draft anyone named Mitch.

I'd like to add the following names to that list:

Francis
Lester
Jacob
Felix

We won't need to trade Kirk since he'll sign a long-term deal before Thursday night :)

Just havin' fun.

Oh, McD. You better call him Psycho. Nobody calls him Francias.

I think that where you frequently have a run on QBs in the early stages of round 1 in most drafts, this year, it's going to be an early run on RBs. I am betting that both Cook and McCaffery are gone before we have a chance to draft either one of them.

What is going on with these diluted samples at combine? Why is it taking so long for the NFL to get the word out?

Another mock with a trade is coming tomorrow. On Wednesday we will have two mocks - one with a trade and one without.

Then we will list the players who could be targets for each round on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

It's almost here.

Then what will you do with all your free time?
