Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Baker was absent at times for certain plays. Took plays off for no apparent reason. Was sub-par at other times. Sure, played well at times. This is the reality of it.

That may be true. That is something the coaches would know that most fans would not. I know some are keen to that, but most are not. Most of us see him making more plays than most of the other lineman.

Well, that is not the best example. He lost where the ball was located on that play, but there were other times when the effort wasn't there.

Seems DeSean Jackson had a direct impact on "JR3", the "next DeSean" by mentoring him

Washington WR John Ross Draft Profile, DeSean Jackson | The MMQB with Peter King

John Ross Speeds Toward the Draft

Over the past year, college football analysts and draft pundits have gushed that John Ross, the University of Washington receiver with blinding speed, could be the next DeSean Jackson. Few realized, however, that the nine-year NFL veteran had taken it upon himself to groom his potential successor.

There's a kids song, now what was it ? Oh ya....

The wheels on the bus all fall to the ground... fall to the ground.... fall to the ground. The wheels on the bus all fall to the ground... Redskins look like clowns:aargh4:

I believe today is the first day that teams can contact FO guys that are currently employed. Kinda sucks due to lack of time between now and the draft so if they are replacing Scott need to move swiftly.

Baker got $16M/3yrs while the Skins signed McClain to $21M/4 yrs ($11M guaranteed). Chris had some issues but I don't see an improvement here considering performance to bucks and Chris was the senior guy for Washington on the line in terms of years with the team. Maybe that's the idea, starting from scratch. Signed Stacy McGee for $25M/5 years - a Baker replacement I guess but can he stay on the field? His 4 years in the league sayz probably not. Maybe they can still get Logan because the eGals are strapped for cash but he'll also be a priority for them.

Update on the Davis contract - $7.5M guaranteed ($4M signing bonus). This years salary ($2M) guaranteed & $1.5M of next years ($3.75M) salary. They could still cut him in 2018 and be on the plus side of the cap hit if it came to that point.

I'd like to see Washington lock up some of their own FAs but from what those guys are getting I can understand why they are willing to let them go. It won't take much to re-sign the FAs that are left (provided they are guys they want). If they get Pryor that'll take some of the sting out of losing both Garcon & DJax. Swearinger for $13.5M/3 yr's looks like a good signing although mostly a Strong Safety. Pretty much says Hall is out ($5M cap savings) considering they also have Cravens.

Overall in FA so far kinda disheartening but mostly these moves make sense from a business side and still some time to make a few things happen if they want. Although the DL signings appear to be overpaying.

Until guys get on the field, there's no way to really know. Lots of people laughed at the vaGiants last year with their FA acquisitions. They supposedly overpaid for below average talent. Now, people praise the moves.

You just never know. In March.
Or April.
Etc...

The Redskins can let Garcon and Jackson go at 30 and 31 years of age (will be by the end of the season) IF Josh Doctson turns into the kind of receiver McCloughan insisted he is OR if the Redskins are able to sign Pryor and draft a WR in Round 2 or 3 with size/speed to be the #2 outside.

If the Redskins don't do anything in FA or the draft and Doctson pulls up lame having Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy or Tom Brady at quarterback isn't really going to matter very much.

I'm not worried about WR. Skins still have Crowder who will likely blossom even further with more opportunities. They still have Reed who is half their passing attack when healthy. They have a decent shot at landing Pryor. And even if Doctson can't overcome his injury issues, they have lots of picks and can spend one of their first 4 on a WR in the draft. As long as Cousins is our QB, our passing game will thrive imho.

even if he does overcome his injuries I don't see nothing wrong with drafting a WR in the second or third. But of course we won't know really till probably training camp

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Greetings from BBQ. Today we have the latest free agency update and there are several changes.

The offseason power boat is navigating choppy waters and free agency is underway. The combine came to a close on Monday and later this month we will have the first mock of March as we countdown to the draft. After free agency simmers down, the mocks will increase in frequency until the very moment we reach the first round.

We will look at our own free agents including those who are re-signed, released, and those who may not return. We will list candidates to be released and the cap savings/hit. We’ll provide updates as needed.

We will no longer list free agents from other teams, just team needs for the Redskins.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days, weeks and months. Who will the Redskins target, re-sign and release? Feel free to offer your ideas on free agency and the draft.

Team Needs:
Free Safety
Defensive Line
Wide Receiver
Inside Linebacker
Left Guard
Running Back

Free Agents Obtained:
A.J. Francis, DT
Phil Taylor, DT
Earl Wolff, SS
Terrell McClain, DE/DT
Stacy McGee, DE/DT
D.J. Swearinger, FS

Free Agents Re-signed:
Nick Sundberg, LS
Junior Galette, OLB
Vernon Davis, TE

Unrestricted Free Agents:
Terence Garvin, ST – (Possibly re-signs)
John Sullivan, C – (Probably re-signs)
Greg Toler, CB – (Unknown)
Duke Ihenacho, SS – (Unknown)
Ziggy Hood, DE – (Possibly re-signs)
Cullen Jenkins, DL - (Very likely walks)
Donte Whitner, SS – (Very likely walks)
Kedric Golston, DL (Very likely walks, retires?)
Josh Evans, SS – (Unknown)

Restricted Free Agents:
Chris Thompson, RB – (Has been tendered – likely re-signs)
Will Compton, ILB – (Has been tendered – likely re-signs)

Exclusive Rights Free Agents:
Kirk Cousins, QB – (Re-signs, plays on the tag, or traded)
Ty Nsehke, OT – (Has been tendered – likely re-signs)
Vinston Painter, OT – (Has been tendered – likely re-signs)

Possible Cuts, Cap Savings, Candidates For Restructure:
Kory Lichtensteiger, C - (Retired - $3.5 Mil saved)
Shawn Lauvao, LG – (Probably stays, Salary reduction? - $4 Mil saved if cut)
Ricky Jean Francois – (Unknown - $3 Mil saved if cut)

DeAngelo Hall, FS – (Possibly released - $4.25 Mil saved if cut)
Niles Paul, TE – (Unknown - $2.0 Mil saved if cut)

Suspension:
Silas Redd, RB – (Released)

Offseason Updates:

The Redskins have announced the offseason practice schedule:
Rookie Camp
May 12-14
OTAs
May 23-25
May 30-June 1
June 5-8
Veterans Mini Camp
June 13-15

The Redskins are still rumored to be in the mix for Dontari Poe.

With the hiring of Torrian Gray as the new DB coach (via Florida and Virginia Tech), look for a substantially huge improvement from the corners and safeties. Many of his former players are in the league and several are expected to be drafted (some highly) in 2017.

It is still possible that the Redskins will make a run at Eagles DT/DE Bennie Logan.

Expect Morgan Moses to get a contract extension in the offseason.

New DE/DT Stacy McGee is a good player and could see plenty of rotational time. Not a starter, but a solid player.

It’s possible that Spencer Long will receive a contract extension this offseason.

We could be hearing soon about a contract with wide receiver Terrelle Pryor.

Personal Thoughts:
With the retirement of Kory Lichtensteiger, my likely to be released list has narrowed to DeAngelo Hall.

If the team releases DeAngelo Hall, BBQ wouldn’t mind seeing him in a front office role.

Hail To The Redskins!

The Redskins are still rumored to be in the mix for Dontari Poe.

The Redskins now have about $11.6M in salary cap room. Expect some cuts in the coming days and weeks. Also, expect a restructure or two. Obviously, a new contract for Kirk Cousins would likely add about $10M in cap space – if it happens.

With the hiring of Torrian Gray as the new DB coach (via Florida and Virginia Tech), look for a substantially huge improvement from the corners and safeties. Many of his former players are in the league and several are expected to be drafted (some highly) in 2017.

DE/DT Bennie Logan arrived in town last night. He is still in Ashburn. Expect a contract soon and possible signing.

Expect Morgan Moses to get a contract extension in the offseason.

I haven't seen anything out there suggesting Poe has been contacted or is visiting - sounded like he was visiting multiple other teams but not the Redskins. Have you seen differently?

On October 3, 1849, Poe was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore, "in great distress, and... in need of immediate assistance", according to Joseph W. Walker who found him. He was taken to the Washington Medical College where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849 at 5:00 in the morning.

You were talking about Edgar Allen Poe, right?

I'm wondering if they're hedging their bets on Phil Taylor. What kind of role do we see him having this season? He's an NT, but is he good enough to take 60% of the snaps?

I quothed you, and I think he ends up a Raven.

Man - I totally forgot we signed Taylor back in January - thanks for the memory jog... I have no idea where they see Taylor fitting in (sub, backup, starter?). Guy was the 22nd pick in the first round when drafted...Had a great rookie season in 2011 for the Browns, and another decent year in 2013. Was a Bronco in 2016 before injuring his knee.
