Default *OFFICIAL* Jim Zorn Fired (merged)

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/red...ter-2-sea.html

Redskins fire Zorn after 2 seasons
The Washington Redskins fired Coach Jim Zorn early Monday morning following a two-year stint that began with his surprising elevation from obscure quarterbacks coach and ended with a dismissal that seemed inevitable following the Redskins' disastrous four-win season.

Zorn's firing was reported by WRC and WUSA.

Zorn, 56, was fired shortly after the team returned from its trip to San Diego, where it lost the season finale 23-20 to finish 4-12, the team's worst record in 15 years. He finished his tumultuous tenure 12-20, and had one year left on his contract.

The Redskins could be preparing to name his replacement within hours after they announced his departure. In December, Washington forced out longtime front office executive Vinny Cerrato and announced the hiring of new general manager Bruce Allen within two hours, putting in motion the overhaul of the franchise's infrastructure after a 10-year period that featured just two playoff appearances.

Zorn arrived at Redskins Park ahead of the team buses at roughly 2:45 a.m. He was escorted to his car by team security some two hours later.

Former Denver and Oakland coach Mike Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls with Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway and the Broncos, has been the presumed hire for weeks. Several NFL sources have said over the past month that they believe Shanahan has long been the choice of Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder, who now must hire his seventh head coach since he took control of the team in 1999.

The Redskins are already cleared to make a swift hire. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, which oversees the NFL's so-called "Rooney Rule" that requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coaching and top-level front office positions, said last month that current secondary coach Jerry Gray, an African American, has already interviewed for Zorn's job. The alliance, therefore, believes the Redskins have complied with the rule, and no further interviews would be necessary.

I guess we will get the details later, but it sounds like the firing took place closer to 4:30 am.

Reid has updated it a couple of times now and it sounds like the FO tried to handle it in a dignified manner. Sounds like security restricted the media from rushing after Zorn and limiting contact with assistants.

Fired employees are almost always escorted off the site. Not saying it is right or wrong - it's just the way it is typically done.

doesn't really matter does it, but according to j reid:

"At around 2:45, Redskins' security ordered all media to leave the parking lot, with one security member saying that it was so that Zorn would not be bothered when he left the building. Over the next two hours, coaches continued to leave the property and at about 4:30 a.m., running backs coach Stump Mitchell got into his car. Redskins security and staff members came out of the building about 10 minutes later and walked toward the media room, which is in a different building, presumably to assure that Zorn would not be bothered by the small media group that had approached Mitchell.

Zorn then came out and walked to his white Porsche Cayenne with a security escort and left the park at 4:43 a.m., talking on his cellphone as he drove out of the parking lot."

Hey, no need to apologize - we posted close to the same time and we were probably typing at the same moment. I just hit "post" before you did. Two threads are good - it makes the forum look very busy.

Edited to say: Aha, it got merged anyway, hehe. Great to see BGO becoming more active with each passing day.

Made official at 7:40 am by Bruce Allen.

One other note - Zorn was not escorted out. He simply left with his administrative assistant. That's better than the earlier reports.

Had to happen. Losing to the Chargers' second team in the predictable manner that the Redskins did yesterday will not save a coach's job in any market.

Today may be the beginning of the Shanahan era......maybe not. In either case, if he's hired, the biggest benefit may be that the team adopts (or perhaps is forced into) a common direction. Now, let's just hope that Snyder allows Bruce Allen to do his job.

PS I already can't wait until the season starts! I can't help it.......

Actually, being escorted out is getting to be pretty common these days. When the company I work for closed their office here in Dallas and let all but 5 us go, they had guards at all the doors to check employees stuff as they left and to make sure no one got out of hand with the folks sent in to handle the terminations. So this doesn't surprise me at all.

.....and in other news water is wet, and the the sky is blue.

I think most of us as fans went into this season hoping for the best but expecting a let down. Well, we got it.

I see some positive things on the horizon though and lots of opportunities to get this mess sorted. They had better not blow it.

I wonder if Bugel will be allowed to retire versus fired?

I believe Bugel, like several of the assistants, has at least one year left on his contract. My guess is he'll make the team "fire" him--unlikely his contract as written would let him get paid for that final year if he resigns.

Buges might be the exception here. Danny just might allow him to "retire" and pay him anyway. Can't say he'd do the same for any of the other coaches though.
