    Week Ten Grades, Evaluations, Questions

Greetings from the international headquarters of BBQ.

Week ten is in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Vikings. They never make it easy for the fans. Have you aged nearly ten years during this season? You’re not alone, but we will try to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades, evaluations and questions. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, questions, and opinions.

Let’s take a look at week ten.

    Quarterbacks:
Question: As a fan are you ready for the team to make a long term commitment to Kirk Cousins?
Answer: Some will say yes. Some will say no. Some will back up their assertions with magnificent statistics. Some will cite the lack of red zone production. Record over the last seven games? 5-1-1 and a strong argument for 7-0 exists (defense on a final drive and a missed chip shot field).
    Grade: A-

    Running Backs:
Question: How about now? Are you going to compare Robert Kelley to Marshawn Lynch or John Riggins this week?
Answer: No. “Fat Rob” had another fine game and Chris Thompson did well as the third down back. The most amazing aspect of Kelley’s game is being able to avoid negative yardage at all costs. Second and nine is far better than second and fourteen.
    Grade: B+

    Wide Receivers:
Question: Do they miss DeSean Jackson?
Answer: This may seem like an easy answer, but the team would love to have the DeSean Jackson who makes big plays. That seems unlikely now as he has lost a step, but (assuming he comes back) Jackson could be an effective decoy down the stretch. Pierre Garcon and Jamison Crowder had a solid day. Is Maurice Harris a rising star?
    Grade: B+

    Tight Ends:
Question: The depth at this position is absolutely scary to other teams, isn’t it?
Answer: Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis strikes fear into the heart of opponents. Keep in mind that Derek Carrier is actually a better receiver than Niles Paul (but Paul provides superb blocking).
    Grade: A-

    Offensive Line:
Question: Is this unit the best in the NFL?
Answer: When you look at the stats and ratings, they are neck and neck with the Cowboys. It’s that close, but BBQ would rate them as 1-A right now. Ty Nsehke took PFF’s honors as the highest rated Redskin last week. Brandon Scherff is quickly becoming the best right guard in the business. This unit just neutralized the best defensive line and defense in the NFL.
    Grade: A

    Defensive Line:
Question: What grade would give their effort against the once vaunted Vikings?
Answer: Let’s be honest with this assessment. The Vikings offense is not the one who started the season at 5-0. They are closer to being a team who is more of a 2-7 juggernaut. That being said, they did a respectable job on Sunday.
    Grade: B

    Linebackers:
Question: Have you missed Preston Smith?
Answer: He never left, but Smith had quite the impact on Sunday. Will Compton and Mason Foster provided timely tackles and both of them had a very good game. The Vikings ran very few plays toward the direction of Ryan Kerrigan, but Mr. Smith was up to the challenge.
    Grade: A-

    Cornerbacks:
Question: Is it safe to say that this group doesn’t want to see Stefon Diggs again??
Answer: That goes without saying, but they began to slow down the Vikings receiver in the second half. Welcome to the league, Kendall Fuller.
    Grade: C

    Safeties:
Question: Did it seem like they quietly had a good day?
Answer: Donte Whitner and Will Blackmon had a very good game. Outside of Stefon Diggs (that was more on the corners), they were quite good. Su’a Cravens continues to prove his worth and Duke Ihenacho provided excellent depth. Coverage sacks at the end of the game sealed it.
    Grade: A

    Special Teams:
Question: Just how much do we like Dustin Hopkins?
Answer: Very much. We all want the overtime kick back for another attempt. Welcome back special teams. Welcome back. We knew you would be back quickly.
    Grade: A+

    Coaching:
Question: Do we nitpick or just be happy with a win and overlook some decisions?
Answer: A win in the NFL can cover a multitude of sins, but ignoring those mistakes is perilous. With the team holding momentum and a two touchdown lead, Sean McVay chose to call three straight passing plays. The Vikings then proceeded to score twenty straight points. The team had no answer in the first half for Stefon Diggs, but did make some positive adjustments. Red zone problems surfaced in the second half. Special teams shined on Sunday.
    Grade: B-

How would you grade each position and the coaching staff? Are the days of Matt Jones in a Redskins uniform over? Should Kory Lichtensteiger be released? Do you let Joe Barry have another year and give him better players in free agency and the draft? Should the Redskins focus more on the wild card and not a division title? Will this be the week that the Redskins break the primetime jinx? We’ll see you next after week eleven with grades, evaluations, and questions.

    Hail to the Redskins!

Cravens is having an impact, he played 'ILB and OLB' which I suppose leads to his 'hybrid' designation and was in there for 37% of snaps, sharing with Foster and quite often both were 'on duty' with Compton.

I put him as a strike safety and graded him there, but your point is correct.

So, what's Cravens' ultimate destination going to be, once he gets fully acclimated to the NFL, the Redskins, and their playbook ?
Will it be Safety or LB ?
Or will he forever float between ?

Strike safety is becoming the newest position in the NFL. Some call it "hybrid". Others will simply refer to the position as "one who switches back and forth on each play".

Keep in mind that the position can also feature playing in the slot. Ky Jarrett had similar duties and performed very well.

BBQ prefers to use the strike safety name. It's more definitive for most students and fans of the game.

    Thanks BB
I like the Strike Safety name. But what abbreviation will we use, so as not to confuse it with the current SS (Strong Safety)
Maybe HS, for Hybrid Safety, to avoid confusion.

I'm just going with "strike" for now. My guess is that the media and NFL will have some sort of designation in the future if we see more strikes. Joe Barry really seems to like them and Scot McCloughan seems to find really good ones as well.

I just hope you don't give the players any ideas, with the word "strike"
