REDSKINS SIGN P TRESS WAY TO MULTI-YEAR EXTENSION

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed punter Tress Way to a multi-year contract extension. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Way has punted in 32 career regular season games, all with Washington since being claimed off waivers from Chicago during the 2014 preseason. In his debut season with the Redskins in 2014, he averaged 47.5 yards per punt, becoming the first member of the Redskins to lead the NFL in punting average for a season since Sam Baker in 1958.

Way punted collegiately at Oklahoma from 2008-12, appearing in 53 games and punting 250 times for 10,988 yards (44.0 avg.) with 36 touchbacks and 91 punts downed inside the 20. He owns Oklahoma’s school record with 71 career punts of 50 or more yards.

Way, 25, attended Union H.S. in Tulsa, Okla., where he was a member of the all-state teams for both The Oklahoman and Tulsa World. He was born April 18, 1990.

The Redskins do have some very good specialists in Way, Hopkins and long snapper Nick Sundberg.

So our claim to fame is we snap, punt and kick the ball really well.
Yay.
I mean, that's a basic fundamental that you need in close games, but it'd be nice to do some other things relatively well.
Here's a Special Teams idea.
A Special Teams that can also cover punts/kicks, and also return punts/kicks halfway decent.

Our special teams are much better than they have been - in years. I really don't know what you're complaining about?

Let's slow down and realize this team won FOUR games in 2014.

If anyone had told you that the team would have a quarterback thrown 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and TE would have 952 yards and 11 TD's in 2015, most people would have said it was pure fantasy homerism at work

So, we do have more on the roster than simply a punter, kicker and long snapper developing into upper echelon players.

But since the post was about resigning Tress Way I decided to focus on the special teams unit rather than talk about holes at S, OC, DT or other spots on the roster.

I'm getting tired of nothing but negative viewpoints. Just sayin'.

Well this makes me happy. :)

I was a little worried during the week where we seemed to be cutting people left right and centre.

But then I started thinking that maybe this is exactly what we need to do. We can get by on middle of the road, but if we want to go somewhere as a team then we have to make tough decisions and cut away players who are just ok and bring in better options.

Tress has always been a good performed for us. I don't see better options out there, so lock that position up.

I'm intrigued to see what happens across the rest of the roster.

See Boone! :D Count me in the positive camp! :D

Just the effect of that Dallas loss at home still coming through Boone :)

Agree, our kicker, punter, snapper have all improved over the last few.

The Ravens franchised Tucker, they seem to highly regard the position if held by a top talent.

Fans of this team in particular, should have more than average respect for the place kicker.

Riggo doesn't get The Run in SB XVII without our AP NFL MVP placekicker's help in getting him there.

Maybe it's our time to catch a break with these kickers, how many have gotten away from us only to have stellar careers elsewhere?

Also, let's not forget how many posters here at BGO have complained time and again in the past about losing the field position battle due to short or shanked punts, or shallow kickoffs that lead to long returns?

Let's not trivialize what these guys do if the outcome of their efforts has a tangible outcome on the course of the game.

I like it...now if we can lock Hopkins up and find our returner we'll be A-OK!

Irony about the kicking situation. The Redskins release Forbath to sign Hopkins who was just released by New Orleans. New Orleans then signs Forbath in the middle of the season to replace the guy that 'beat out' Hopkins

I know I've been an eyore lately, but I'm not sure how this is anything but good. Really good.

Tress is way better than anything we've had in a while.

Keeping the ones worth keeping, getting rid of the ones not worth keeping, not signing high priced mercs past their prime. Loving it. McL took over a multi year project. Last years Division win was completely unexpected, helped immensely by a piss poor division. Still a few years away, but I'm liking the way it's going.

True our division was piss poor, we finally started winning the games we were supposed to. Been a long time since we've done that consistently.

Once we settle on our next B-Mitch type returner we'll be solid for quite a while.

Add me to the list of folks happy with this signing and the rest of our kicking game. McGloughan keep on rollin with the roster overhaul, I'm ready.
