Chris Culliver, CB – (Unknown) The situation is explained here: Uncertainty remains for Chris Culliver, who vows to be ready for start of season - Washington Times

Here are some of the free agents that could be targeted. Obviously, the Redskins can’t sign each player, but having what looks to be substantial cap room will allow for some flexibility. Who do you like in this list and who would you avoid?

Possible Free Agent Targets:

Quarterbacks:
Chase Daniel, Kansas City

Running Backs:
Lamar Miller, Miami
Ronnie Hillman, Denver

Wide Receivers:
Rishard Matthews, Miami
Marvin Jones, Cincinnati
Travis Benjamin, Cleveland

Tight Ends:

Offensive Tackles:

Guards:
Kelechi Osemele, Baltimore
Michael Harris, Minnesota
Jeff Allen, Kansas City

Centers:

Defensive Tackles:

Defensive End:
Malik Jackson, Denver
Jaye Howard, Kansas City

Linebackers:
Brandon Marshall, Denver
Danny Trevathan, Denver

Cornerbacks:
Janoris Jenkins, Los Angeles
Brandon Boykin, Pittsburgh

Safeties:
George Iloka, Cincinnati

Teams With Serious Cap Issues:
Miami
New Orleans
Buffalo
New York Jets
Pittsburgh
New England
Baltimore
Detroit

Teams With Enormous Cap Room:
Jacksonville
Oakland
San Francisco
Chicago
Tampa Bay

Teams with serious cap issues could help the Redskins if they have their eyes on a certain player or players. However, teams with plenty of cap room could snipe a Redskins player. The Chris Culliver situation is interesting and BBQ thinks there will be a definite restructure in his immediate future or be released. BBQ believes that it is increasingly possible that DeSean Jackson will be released. That can be discussed in comments as we go along. BBQ thinks that Dashon Goldson likely restructures his contract to a much more team friendly deal. Also, we have decided to include very good football players on the free agent list from other teams only. It is almost impossible to know who of the “lesser” players could be targeted, so no attempts will be made unless media chatter dictates otherwise. Obviously the Redskins can’t sign each player, but we think that two very good free agents could be on the table.

We’ll update the free agency situations frequently and as media chatter warrants. The first mock draft for 2016 is coming later this week.

Hail To The Redskins!

Couple of thoughts. First of all, WTF is the deal with the Wash Times website? It took forever to load because of the ridiculous amounts of ads, yikes.

Second, and more importantly, I would have flipped the statuses of Young and Thomas. I love Young, but using a FB seems anathema to Jay; Pierre on the other hand provided a nice spark and would give us a better 3rd down back than Jones was this year, imo. If Jones is getting elevated to RB1, I'd like to have some veteran depth behind him.

The bomb shell?

The reason Young likely stays is because of special teams. Playing FB is a bonus. He plays in all four phases of special teams and is a valuable member of each one. That is why you keep him.

Culliver situation is the blockbuster. It changes everything with his contract.

I wonder if Young wants to come back though. He can't be thrilled that he is relegated to such a small role on offense.

As for the Culliver situation, that's very interesting. It's nice that the team can negotiate from a position of strength with him. I would think renegotiating would be in his best interests, as teams may not be incredibly interested in a player with off the field problems who is coming off an injury as well.

If Scot handles that right, we could get him to renegotiate to a more cap-friendly deal.

Mistake made in the original post and has been corrected. Duke Ihenacho is added to the restricted free agent list.

Key Upcoming Dates:

January 23 - East-West Shrine game.

January 30 - Senior Bowl.

February 8 - Teams can place players on waivers.

February 16 - Teams can place franchise or transition tags on players.

February 23-29 - NFL Combine.

March 1 - Deadline for teams to apply franchise or transition tags.

March 7-9 - Teams can start to negotiate with FAs on other teams.

March 9 - Free agency starts at 4pm EDT.

March 9 - Teams must exercise 2016 options on players by 4pm EDT.

April 18 - OTAs begin. Teams with new coaches can start earlier.

April 22 - Deadline for RFAs to sign their offer sheets.

April 28-30 - NFL Draft.

Special Notes:
Redskins have eight total picks in the draft (two picks in the seventh).

Salary cap is expected to climb to about $153.4M, possibly more.

Thanx for the post BB.

Depending on what the Skins do in terms of cuts, extensions and restructured contracts they could wind up with about $30M or more in cap space which is a big jump from the $6M or so they have now. And the current top 51 includes RGIII's $16M option so there's a big chunk taking cap space.

Seattle has a decent amount of cap space ($26M) but several of these guys are coming off their rookie contracts and have played well above those deals. A pile of free agents and they can't sign them all. Their list of FA's is about twice as long as the Skins is.

A couple that might be of interest (both UFAs):

Jeremy Lane (25) CB ~ Not the healthiest of guys in the last two years but in the 6 games he played in at the end of the season he did have 2 Int's and 6 PD's.
Bruce Irvin (26) OLB ~ He wants to have more of a pass rusher role but he is in a 4-3 right now and Seattle really doesn't blitz as much as it seems however he did get 5.5 sacks. Going to a team that plays a 3-4 would give him a better opportunity to go after the QB.

I don't see any of their possible cuts that would interest Washington.

You can keep Bruce Irvin...the way he attacked Rob Gronkowski at the end of the Super Bowl last year was enough for me to wonder why he wasn't suspended for at least 4 games. During the gang style attack on Gronk, Irvin came in with 2 sucker punches as 4 or 5 Seahags circled him like buzzards.

Not exactly sure where to post this, but some pretty good ideas from Tandler:

But this is all in fun so let’s take a look at five potential targets:

Dolphins RB Lamar Miller—He won’t be 25 until OTAs start and he can be the dynamic back the Redskins are looking for. Miller has runs of 97 and 85 yards the last two years. Another plus is that he has had a fairly light workload in his career; in four seasons he has averaged 160 carries a year and never more than 216 in any one season.

Seahawks WR Jermaine Kearse—At 6-1 he’s not a huge receiver but he would add some needed size to the Redskins’ receiving corps. He can get it done in the red zone; he has five red zone touchdown receptions in the last three years, more than any Redskin not named Reed or Garçon. McCloughan is familiar with him as he was with the Seahawks when they signed Kearse as an undrafted free agent in 2012

Jaguars C Stefen Wisniewski—The former Raider signed a one-year “prove it” deal with the Jaguars. He didn’t miss a snap and was one of the Jags’ best offensive linemen. At the age of 27 he’s in line for a more substantial deal and the Redskins should take a hard look to see if they should offer him one.

Chargers S Eric Weddle—Yeah, I know, another aging safety. And this one is a long shot but I think the Redskins will keep their eye on him. Incumbent safety Dashon Goldson is slated to make $8 million in 2016 and I don’t think that the Redskins will pay him that. If he won’t renegotiate, the Redskins will need an alternative if they decide to move on from Goldson and that could be Weddle. At age 31 he would be a short-term solution but he would be a quality (two-time All-Pro, including 2014) stopgap.

Broncos ILB Danny Trevathan—If Mason Foster leaves, or even if he stays, Trevathan could be a good fit. He has the background in a winning organization that McCloughan likes and he’ll be 26 in a couple of months.

On a related note, enough of the aging safeties every year. We need a 23 year old safety for the next 8 years. I'd love to see Scot steal one in the third.

We could have had Wisniewski in the 2nd round and chose Jarvis Jenkins. Thanks Shanahan!

I was just thinking the same thing about Calais Campbell. Instead, we took Sleepy Davis, Kelly and the rapper.

Known team interviews for the Redskins at the East-West Shrine game.

Terrance Smith, ILB, Florida St.
Keith Lumpkin, OT, Rutgers
Juston Burris, CB, N.C. St.
Keenan Reynolds, RB, Navy
Elijah Shumate, SS, Notre Dame
Joe Thuney, OG, N.C. St.

Just a slight preview for the BBQ mock coming in two or three days. We have a fifth round watch on Shumate and a 7th round watch on Reynolds. Both were listed in our watches early in December. They could enter some BBQ mocks in the future - depending on interest from the team.

Smith has been very active in EW practices and has really stood out this week. He is a late round prospect.

Lumpkin is big. Really big.

No info of note on Burris and Thuney.

Keep a watch on Keenan Reynolds. He could be a late round pick by the Redskins. If he can get an Naval assignment in the DC area for two years, he could be a potential steal.

These two look interesting to me.

The other three scream 'meh.'

BB, love the work you do.

I don't think DJax is going anywhere.

I still think our lines need a lot of help. Whether it be in the draft or free agency.

Agree with everything here.

I don't see DJax going anywhere. The offense was much better once he came back and was healthy.

I see us going after DL/OL in the draft and adding some depth pieces in FA.
