Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

We could have had Wisniewski in the 2nd round and chose Jarvis Jenkins. Thanks Shanahan!

For that matter they could have him when he was a FA before Jacksonville signed him. At the time I thought they should've tried. Maybe they did try but I don't remember any kind of visit to DC by him.

Any word on if Hatcher plans to retire?

The good thing is McCloughan won't go crazy in FA, rather he will sign guys at bargain prices to keep us out of cap hell.

May sound bad but I kinda hope he does. It'll force Mcluvin to go younger while getting rid of a vet that may or may not 1/2 ass it for the team.

Im in the same boat that I hope Hatcher retires so that we may look younger.

It'll force Mcluvin to go younger while getting rid of a vet that may or may not 1/2 ass it for the team.

My money is, that he may not.
It was Hatch that took it upon himself to mentor the rookie Preston Smith, when it was Smith who was singled out by team-mates of half-assing it, earlier in the year.
And it was Hatch who pep-talked and thanked the younger players for getting the team to the playoffs, acknowledging that vets like him should appreciate the meaning and opportunity of it, as it may be the last chance in the older vets' careers.

For Hatcher might depend on the draft. I doubt that there is a FA that really fits the bill for the Redskins.

The draft really isn't that deep on DE/DTs especially for what fits the Skins. Scot may have a guy on his radar that can push for a starting role so I'll wait and find out - like the rest of us.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

Here is our first Redskins mock for 2016. Free agency could determine what happens in the draft and we’ll focus more on that in the coming weeks. BBQ will have a couple of mocks before March 9 (the official opening of FA), but the frequency will pick up shortly thereafter.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the first mock for 2016.

Round One: A’Shawn Robinson, DE/DT, Alabama
One of the best defensive linemen to ever play for the Crimson Tide. He can play inside or slide outside as a 3-4 end. A run stuffer. A pass rusher. Great attitude. A dominating force who can overwhelm an offensive line. Robinson is everything you could want in a defensive lineman and more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BR7EyecqwM
Other Possible Targets:
Reggie Ragland, ILB, Alabama
Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio St.
Ezekiel Elliot, RB, Ohio St.
DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon
Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama
Jalen Ramsey, FS, Florida St.

Round Two: Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame
Unquestionably, the absolute best deep threat receiver in the 2016 draft. With blazing speed, Fuller is able to easily get separation from defenders. Numbers are a bit down from the previous season, but that is due to below average quarterback play. Can stretch the field for other receivers and tight ends.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTZUMsRdfTQ
Other Possible Targets:
Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh
Joshua Garnett, G, Stanford
Sebastian Tretola, G, Arkansas
Adolphus Washington, DT, Ohio St.
Denver Kirkland, G, Arkansas
Jaylon Smith, ILB, Notre Dame

Round Three: Jeremy Cash, SS, Duke
Free safeties are usually more valued by football teams than strike safeties. Here is one strike that you simply can’t ignore. From the program that produced Jamison Crowder, Duke has a real gem in Jeremy Cash. He started out at Ohio St., but transferred to the ACC program after his freshman season. He has steadily improved on his coverage skills and should only get better. A true playmaker. Can suddenly change the direction of a game with his ball hawking skills.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT3-dHxAdKk
Other Possible Targets:
Chris Jones, DE, Mississippi St.
William Jackson, CB, Houston
Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame
Landon Turner, G, North Carolina
Jayron Kearse, FS, Clemson

Round 4: Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama
Alabama’s national championship team is likely to send many players to the NFL and Ryan Kelly is another of those prospects. Provided leadership and opened up huge lanes for the Crimson Tide’s formidable running game. Good in pass protection, but could be a bit more polished. He will need to add about fifteen to twenty pounds of bulk to his tall frame, but that should not be an issue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6fbGqi8oIw
Other Possible Targets:
Karl Joseph, S, West Virginia
Aaron Burbridge, WR, Michigan St.
Miles Killebrew, SS, Southern Utah
Charles Tapper, DE, Oklahoma
Blake Martinez, ILB, Stanford

Round Five: Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana
Indiana is known as a basketball mecca and the football team is something of an afterthought. The last few years Indiana has seen some good fortunes on the gridiron and Howard is a big reason for that buzz. Even with Tevin Coleman (now with the Atlanta Falcons), his backfield running mate last year, Howard was a running machine and still rushed for more than 1,500 yards. He is overlooked because of being in a weak program, but has the size and strength to excel at the next level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzk5QUSjAY
Other Possible Targets:
Dan Voltz, C, Wisconsin
Elijah Shumate, SS, Notre Dame
Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor
Jonathan Williams, RB, Arkansas
Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia

Round Six: Jared Norris, ILB, Utah
Norris has been a good linebacker for the Utes during his career in the PAC-12. He has good skills in the running game, but needs to work a bit on his pass defense. A true tackling machine that doesn’t get as much attention as his counterparts at more notable conference schools. A true team leader. Has the intangibles to be a good special teams player.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOZDA2Tvq98
Other Possible Targets:
Jonah Austin, G, Nicholls St.
Kyler Fackrell, OLB, Utah St.
Matt Ioannidis, DE, Temple
Evan Boehm, C, Missouri
Devon Cajuste, WR, Stanford

Round Seven: Nate Sudfeld, QB, Indiana
The Redskins take another Hoosier in round seven, a project with some decent upside at the quarterback position. The fundamentally sound Sudfeld had a good senior season with nearly 3,200 yards passing. He tossed twenty-four touchdowns and just five interceptions. The numbers were twenty-one and nine for his junior campaign. He would obviously be a candidate for third string, but could quickly become a reliable backup within a year or two. The one negative would be that the 6’5”, 240 lb. Sudfeld floats his long passes a bit too much – something that should be easily corrected.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UG6y2yLcnA
Other Possible Targets:
Sedrick Flowers, G, Texas
Jimmy Bean, OLB, Oklahoma St.
Antwaun Woods, DT, Southern Cal
Travis Wilson, QB, Utah
Keenan Reynolds, RB, Navy

Round Seven: Devon Johnson, RB/FB, Marshall
Johnson is a big, bruising back who could make the team as a fullback and special teams player. He was also a tight end at one point for the Thundering Herd. Fought through injuries this past season and that limited his yardage and time on the field. In previous seasons his numbers were much higher. Could make the team if he can transition to all four phases of special teams. Goes by the nickname of “Rockhead”.

Hail To The Redskins!

Last year we seemed to draft mostly SEC guys. Was this an anomaly or our FO tendency?

Is Paea worth keeping around for a spot or should we cut bait and draft there? I'm all for going D-line I the first or second either way.

Mock My Draft

Round 1> Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor /// Height: 6-2. Weight: 310. /// Projected 40 Time: 5.14. /// Projected Round: 1-2. In 2015, Billings totaled 39 tackles, 14 for a loss and 5.5 sacks
About 25 sec's in when he chases down a receiver from behind.

Others:
A'Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama (I think he's gone before he gets to pick 21. Still think Billings is a better fit.) In 2015, Robinson recorded 46 tackles with 7.5 for a loss and 3.5 sacks.
Jalen Ramsey, CB/S, Florida State Doubtful he drops this far to Washington.

Round 2> Vonn Bell, S, Ohio State /// Height: 5-11. Weight: 205. /// Projected 40 Time: 4.66. /// Projected Round: 2-3. Bell played well this season with 6 ints, 92 tackles and 6 PDs.
A violent hitter. Actually might need to tone his game down a bit at the pro level

Others:
Marcus Maye, S, Florida (Projects as a Free Safety. Plays solid in the box.) /// Jeremy Cash, S, Duke

Round 3> James Bradberry, CB, Samford /// Height: 6-1. Weight: 213. /// Projected 40 Time: 4.47. /// Projected Round (2016): 2-3. (he might jump up to an upper pick in the 2nd). Great skill set with size and speed. Recorded 45 tackles with 11 PDs and 2 Int's in 2015. Really couldn't any decent clips of him.

Others:
Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia /// William Jackson, CB, Houston /// Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame

Round 4>Josh Forrest, ILB, Kentucky /// Height: 6-3. Weight: 255. /// Projected 40 Time: 4.87. /// Projected Round: 3-5. (Really need an upgrade at ILB for a run crusher.) Thickly built thumper who is a good run defender in the tackle box. He totaled 93 tackles with six for a loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and 5 passes batted in 2015.

Others:
Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame /// Josh Ferguson, RB, Illinois (Very good receiver and possible returner. May not drop this far.) /// Tyvis Powell, S, Ohio State

Round 5> Jack Allen, C, Michigan State /// Height: 6-2. Weight: 295. /// Projected 40 Time: 5.24. /// Projected Round: 3-5. (gets around the field really well.)

Others:
Mike Matthews, C, Texas A&M (undersized but a top 5 Center and his family carries the football gene.) /// Eric Striker, OLB, Oklahoma /// Rodney Hardrick, ILB, Oregon

Round 6> Devon Cajuste, WR, Stanford /// Height: 6-4. Weight: 228. /// Projected 40 Time: 4.54. /// Projected Round: 4-6. (More of a Niles Paul type than a WR.)
Plays taller than his height and a willing blocker.

Others:
D'haquille "Duke" Williams, WR, Auburn /// DaVonte Lambert, DE

Round 7> Brandon Doughty, QB, Western Kentucky /// Height: 6-3. Weight: 220. /// Projected 40 Time: 4.86. /// Projected Round: 6-FA.
(Redskins need to think QB somewhere in Draft/UDFA. Throws a kinda wobbly pass & not from a pro set. He'd be a project.)
In 2015, the senior completed 72 percent of his passes for 5,055 yards with 48 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Was about the same in 2014.

Round 7> Nick Vannett, TE, Ohio State /// Height: 6-6. Weight: 260. /// Projected 40 Time: 4.88. /// Projected Round: 3-5. (As a blocking TE)
In 2015, Vannett had 19 receptions for 162 yards. He is a strong blocker and was an asset in the Buckeyes' ground game.

A lot of depth in the secondary in the draft so they have the ability to play around these picks in terms of draft order and get a guy with the skill sets they are looking for.

I believe we will give Reggie Ragland very serious consideration for our first round selection.

Liking the mock Mr. Bass. Very good. Many nice thing to like about it. I wouldn't mind many of those players being selected.

FYI...

Free agency update coming early in the week. I was able to get some insight over the last few days from some Redskins beat reporters and a couple of them gave me some interesting info. It's very much appreciated and I will pass it along.

Eagerly awaitng BB. :spy:

Here are some of the free agents that could be targeted. Obviously, the Redskins can’t sign each player, but having what looks to be substantial cap room will allow for some flexibility. Who do you like in this list and who would you avoid?

Possible Free Agent Targets:

Quarterbacks:
Chase Daniel, Kansas City

Running Backs:
Lamar Miller, Miami
Ronnie Hillman, Denver

Wide Receivers:
Rishard Matthews, Miami
Marvin Jones, Cincinnati
Travis Benjamin, Cleveland

Tight Ends:

Offensive Tackles:

Guards:
Kelechi Osemele, Baltimore
Michael Harris, Minnesota
Jeff Allen, Kansas City

Centers:
Stefen Wisniewski, Jacksonville

Defensive Tackles:
Muhammad Wilkerson, New York Jets
Ian Williams, San Francisco

Linebackers:
Brandon Marshall, Denver
Danny Trevathan, Denver

Cornerbacks:

Brandon Boykin, Pittsburgh

Safeties:
George Iloka, Cincinnati
Rodney McLeod, Los Angeles
Isa Abdul-Quddus, Detroit

Teams With Serious Cap Issues:
Miami
New Orleans
Buffalo
New York Jets
Pittsburgh
New England
Baltimore
Detroit

Teams With Enormous Cap Room:
Jacksonville
Oakland
San Francisco
Chicago
Tampa Bay

Teams with serious cap issues could help the Redskins if they have their eyes on a certain player or players. However, teams with plenty of cap room could snipe a Redskins player.

In talking with several Redskins beat reporters, BBQ has learned the following: Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson have hefty cap numbers and decisions need to be made. Restructures, releases, one or the other? No one knows, but the Redskins are looking closely at the situation. The odds are increasing for Dashon Goldson being released (with no cap hit). A real unknown is Jason Hatcher, but he could decide to retire – a decision that could be known within the next couple of weeks. Alfred Morris will probably explore his options, but could actually return on a vet minimum contract.

The ship has sailed on Josh LeRibeus. There is a 99.99% chance that he will not return. Perry Riley is another player who likely will not return and be released. Shawn Lauvao may never return to form with his various leg injuries. Other players above have their situations mentioned, but no other insight is known at this time.

The Chris Culliver situation is interesting and BBQ thinks there will be a definite restructure in his immediate future or be released. Also, we have decided to include very good football players on the free agent list from other teams only. New names have been added with this update. It is almost impossible to know who of the “lesser” players could be targeted, so no attempts will be made unless media chatter dictates otherwise. Obviously the Redskins can’t sign each player, but we think that two very good free agents could be on the table.

We’ll update the free agency situations frequently and as media chatter warrants. The mock drafts for 2016 will be sparsely periodic until mid March. Give us your thoughts on free agency and what you think will happen.

Hail To The Redskins!

FYI...

I'll be posting information about the upcoming Senior Bowl later in the week.

Also...

When would you like to see the next FA update? When would you like the next mock to be posted? Do you like the idea we had last year of posting "standard" mocks, mocks with trades, and BGO member centric mocks?

Speaking of mocks, we could see a change due to recent news about various Redskins. A guard could be needed. A receiver could be featured. A center is likely. Defensive line is a given. It's possible that running backs could take a huge back seat if a franchise type is signed in FA. BBQ thinks it is very possible that the Redskins trade down to the latter portion of round one or to the early stages of round two.

I spent about twelve hours of study on Saturday for the upcoming draft. My goal this year is to get two players predicted correctly in the final mock - we have eight picks. If I'm loopy and crazy (well, a little more than usual) by the end of April, now you know why.

Your ideas and feedback is appreciated - keep it coming.

BB, Darian Thompson might be worth studying. I see a lot of sharp football minds raving about him.

Thompson my favorite prospect that I've watched so far.

‏@MattBowen41 Senior Bowl: Impressed w/ Boise State S Darian Thompson (6-2, 215). Smooth pedal, closes to the ball, physical. And he finishes every play.

Darian Thompson, S, Boise State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 212.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2016): 2-4.
1/16/16: Thompson continued his strong play in 2015 as he has totaled 65 tackles with four passes broken up and five interceptions. The senior has an impressive combination of size, tackling ability, instincts and ball skills. He had a big junior year with seven interceptions and 71 tackles. As a sophomore, Thompson recorded 63 tackles and four interceptions.

Maybe Vonn Bell is better. I haven't looked at either yet.

Good news and bad news.

They won't shut up about this kid, so apparently he's flying up boards.

The good news? Maybe he pushes a great safety down to us.

Darian Thompson has separated himself from the other safeties here. Dude is fluid, attacks the ball air or ground and has big confidence.
