Game Notes: Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys



· The Washington Redskins defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 34-23, in front of an announced crowd of 90,127 people at AT&T Stadium on Sunday.

· With a regular season record of 9-7, the victory gave the Redskins their 39th winning season in team history. It marked their 24th nine-win season in team history, the franchise’s first since 2012.

· The Redskins have now posted four consecutive wins for the first time since winning seven straight to close the 2012 season.

· The Redskins’ have now won three consecutive road games for the first time since winning the final three road games of the 2012 season.

· The Redskins set a new team record for completion percentage in a season (69.5), surpassing the previous mark of 66.5 set in 2014. The team also added to their team record for completions, finishing the season with 386.

· With 437 yards of offense, the Redskins tied a team record by posting a third consecutive game with 400-plus yards of offense, matching three-game streaks in 1949, 1981-82, 1983 and 2013.

· The Redskins tied a team record with 21 first-quarter points, set previously four times including most recently on Sept. 19, 1999 vs. the New York Giants.

· Quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 12-of-15 passes for 176 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of 155.1. He exited the game in the second quarter.

· Cousins finished the 2015 season having completed 379-of-543 passes (69.8 percent) for 4,166 yards with 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a passer rating of 101.6.

· With the effort, Cousins (4,166) broke Jay Schroeder’s team record for passing yards in a single season (4,109 in 1986). He broke the record on a 28-yard pass to wide receiver Jamison Crowder in the second quarter.

· Cousins finished the 2015 season with a 69.8 completion percentage, the second-highest figure in team history (70.3 by Sammy Baugh in 1945). It marks the eighth-best single-season percentage in NFL history among qualified passers.

· Pending the results of Sunday’s games, Cousins could become the first Redskins quarterback to lead the NFL in completion percentage since Sonny Jurgensen in 1970. The Redskins could also lead the NFL in team completion percentage in a season for the 11th time in team history and the first time since 1970.

· Cousins (379) extended his existing team record for completions in a season. During the game, Cousins (543) also broke Jay Schroeder’s team record for attempts in a season (541 in 1986).

· Cousins extended his streak of games with a touchdown pass to 16, passing Joe Theismann (15 in 1982-83) for sole possession of the second-longest streak in team history. He became the first player in team history to throw a touchdown in all 16 games in a season since the adoption of the 16-game schedule in 1978.

· Cousins posted the third 4,000-yard passing season in team history, joining Jay Schroeder (1986) and Brad Johnson (1999).

· Cousins’ third touchdown pass was his 29th of the season, tying him with Joe Theismann for second-most in a season in team history (29 in 1983).

· With three touchdown passes, Cousins (47) passed Norm Snead (46) for ninth-most career touchdown passes in team history.

· According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Cousins became the first player in team history to throw three touchdowns in the first quarter of a game.

· Cousins recorded his sixth consecutive game with a passer rating of 100.0 or better, the longest streak by a Redskins quarterback in records available back to 1960.

· Cousins’ 101.6 single-season passer rating in 2015 ranked third in team history among qualified passers, trailing Sammy Baugh (109.9 in 1945) and Robert Griffin III (102.4 in 2012).

· Cousins became the 12th Redskins quarterback to start all 16 games in season since the NFL adopted the 16-game schedule in 1978. Cousins became the first Redskins quarterback to do so since 2009 (Jason Campbell).

· Tight end Jordan Reed caught four passes for 45 yards. He finished the 2015 season with 87 receptions for 952 yards (both team records for a tight end) with 11 receiving touchdowns.

· With his first catch, Reed broke a tie with Chris Cooley (83 in 2008) to set the team’s single-season receptions record by a tight end.

· Reed led all Redskins players in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns this season, becoming the first Redskins tight end to lead the team in all three categories since Jean Fugett in 1977.

· Reed is the first tight end to lead the Redskins in receptions in a season since 2008 (Cooley), the first tight end to lead the team in receiving yards in a season since 1977 (Fugett), and the first tight end to lead the team in receiving touchdowns in a season since 2009 (Fred Davis).

· Wide receiver Ryan Grant recorded his second touchdown reception of the season and of his career on a five-yard catch in the first quarter.

· Wide receiver Pierre Garçon recorded a 39-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. The touchdown was his sixth of the season, tying his career high set in 2010 and 2011.

· Garçon finished the season recording a receiving touchdown in three consecutive games for the first time since Weeks 12-14 of the 2012 season.

· Wide receiver Jamison Crowder caught five passes for a career-high 109 receiving yards, his first career 100-yard receiving game.

· Crowder finished the season with 59 receptions, passing Art Monk (58 in 1980) for the most by a rookie in team history. It is the second-most by a member of the Redskins in his first NFL season, trailing Gary Clark (72 in 1985).

· Crowder recorded his second receiving touchdown of the season in the first quarter, becoming the first Redskins rookie wide receiver with multiple receiving touchdowns in a season since Rod Gardner in 2001.

· Crowder recorded a career-long 44-yard reception in the first quarter.

· Quarterback Colt McCoy recorded a 71-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, the longest pass completion of his career.

· Wide receiver Rashad Ross was the recipient of the 71-yard touchdown pass, the first receiving touchdown of his career.

· The 71-yard completion from McCoy to Ross was the Redskins’ third-longest play from scrimmage in 2015, trailing a 78-yard pass in Week 10 and a 77-yard pass in Week 15.

· Running back Alfred Morris led the Redskins with 100 rushing yards on 19 carries.

· The 100-yard rushing game was the 13th of Morris’ career, pushing him past Earnest Byner, Terry Allen and George Rogers for sole possession of fifth-most in team history.

· Linebacker Will Compton recorded his first career interception, picking off Cowboys quarterback Kellen Moore in the first quarter.

· Defensive end Chris Baker recorded his second fumble recovery of the season in the first quarter. He also added to his career highs in sacks in the third quarter, posting his sixth sack of the season.

· Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan recorded a sack to push his season total to a team-high 9.5, the second-highest single-season total of his career (13.5 in 2014).

· Defensive end Frank Kearse recorded his first sack of the season in the third quarter.

· Linebacker Preston Smith recorded a sack to push his season sack total to 8.0, the second-most by a Redskins rookie since sacks became an official statistic in 1982 (11.0, Brian Orakpo in 2009).

· Pending the results of Sunday’s games, Smith could become the first member of the Redskins to lead all NFL rookies in sacks in a season since Orakpo in 2009.

· Smith finished the season by posting a sack in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

· Cornerback Will Blackmon recorded his career-high second interception of the season in the fourth quarter. Blackmon also added his career-high third forced fumble of the season on the Cowboys’ following drive.

· Guard Brandon Scherff started his 16th regular season game for the Redskins at right guard this season, becoming only the third rookie offensive lineman to start 16 games for Washington (Jon Jansen in 1999 and Chris Samuels in 2000).

· Kicker Dustin Hopkins converted two field goal attempts, finishing the 2015 season 25-of-28 on field goal attempts. His 89.3 field goal percentage this season marked the third-best single-season percentage in Redskins history.

· The Redskins finished the season with a team passer rating of 102.0, one-tenth of a point shy of the team record of 102.1, set in 2012.

· Redskins’ passers finished the 2015 season with an interception percentage of 2.0 percent, the third-lowest in team history.

· The Redskins scored 34 or more points in three consecutive games for the first time since doing so in a four-game span in Weeks 5-8 of the 1983 season.

· The Redskins recorded four or more sacks for a third consecutive game for the first time since Weeks 5-7 of the 1992 season.

· With zero turnovers against Dallas, the Redskins posted consecutive zero-turnover games for the first time since a three-game streak in Weeks 8-11 of the 2012 season.

· The Redskins and Cowboys split a regular season series for the 30th time in series’ 56-year history.

· The Redskins improved their record in regular season finales against Dallas to 5-3 since the adoption of the 16-game schedule in 1978.

· The Redskins have now posted victories in North Texas in consecutive seasons for the first time since winning three straight road contests against Dallas from 1987-89.

· The victory was the Redskins’ first January regular season win since Week 17 of the 2005 season (Jan. 1, 2006 at Philadelphia), snapping a three-game losing streak in regular season games played in January.

· The Redskins pushed their record in NFC East play this season to 4-2, marking the team’s third-best divisional record since divisional alignment in 2002. The team went 5-1 in NFC East play in 2005 and 2012.
