1.0 is here.
Also for comparison, Rich Tandler's 2.0 Roster Thread. I'm linking Rich's thread here for a few reasons. First, it's near identical to my picks. Second, Rich posted his before I did mine. Yes, I did look at his out of curiosity and I also take his commentary along with Finlay and Tischler in consideration when I listen to their CSN podcast. That said, these opinions are my own and my explanations probably differ a bit to Rich's opinion. So, I wanted to remove any thoughts of plagiarism from the get go.
Lots of changes from the last version, so here we go.
QB (2)
Alex Smith
Colt McCoy
Thoughts: No change here. Kevin Hogan did have a nice game winning drive against the Jets, but for the most part it was still a lot of limited movement. I just don't see the need of using a roster spot when you could probably sign a player to the practice squad and get the same results.
RB (4)
Chris Thompson
Samaje Perine
Rob Kelley
Byron Marshall (?)
Thoughts: I think the team likes Marshall slightly over Bibbs. That said, what do you do with Marshall if he misses more than two weeks (leg injury slated at 2-4 weeks). Do you inactivate him until after the BYE? Do you IR him? Do you release him and try to put on the practice squad (doubtful). I guess it depends on the health of Thompson, Perine (ankle) and Kelley.
TE (3)
Jordan Reed
Vernon Davis
Jeremy Sprinkle
Thoughts: No change.
WR (6)
Josh Doctson
Paul Richardson
Jamison Crowder
Maurice Harris
Trey Quinn
Cam Sims
Thoughts: Sims continues to make plays and get noticed. I'm not sure I'd rather keep Quick because of the veteran presence, but the debate is whether the 'Skins could stash either Quinn or Sims on the practice squad
OL (9)
Trent Williams
Shawn Lauvao
Chase Roullier
Brandon Scherff
Morgan Moses
Ty Nsekhe
Geron Chrisitian
Tony Bergstrom
Tyler Catalina
Thoughts: Geron Christian and Kyle Kalis had better games. Tony Bergstrom struggled, that said I still don't see this list changing. Maybe the 'Skins keep a tenth OL, but at this point I doubt it.
DL (6)
Daron Payne
Jonathan Allen
Matt Ioannidis
Ziggy Hood
Anthony Lanier
Tim Settle
Thoughts: There are many that think the 'Skins should keep 7 DL with Phil Taylor making the roster. The problem with this is that I haven't seen him at all this year. With Payne dominating and Settle looking good, I don't see a point in keeping an oft injured 3rd NT.
OLB (5)
Ryan Kerrigan
Preston Smith
Ryan Anderson
Pernell McPhee
Pete Robertson
Thoughts: Nobody really stood out backup wise against the Jets, so no change here. Robertson holds onto a roster spot because he's a good Special Teams guy.
ILB (6)
Mason Foster
Zach Brown
Josh Harvey-Clemons
Zach Vigil
Shaun Dion Hamilton
Martrell Spaight
Thoughts: I feel the Redskins have long term plans for Hamilton (future starter) and I don't think they are willing to try and stash him on the practice squad like with Quinn and Sims. Spaight is the unknown. He had a decent game against the Jets with some great tackles. Also he is a very good special teams player. In the end I think it comes down to him and Adonis Alexander for the final spot.
CB (5)
Josh Norman
Quinton Dunbar
Fabian Moreau
Danny Johnson
Greg Stroman
Thoughts: The team is taking a risk going so young in the backfield, but Scandrick was not clicking with the team and they could use the cap savings. Adonis Alexander may be added to the roster, it just depends on his hamstring injury. My guess either he'll be IRed or will make the team over Spaight.
S (4)
DJ Swearinger
Montae Nicholson
Deshazor Everett
Troy Apke
Thoughts: I'm guessing Fish Smithson, Quin Blanding or Kenny Ladler will be placed on the practice squad for emergencies. Troy Apke looked better this week and I think the team will be happy with just the 4 safeties.
Special Teams (3)
P
Tress Way
K
Dustin Hopkins
LS
Nick Sundberg
Thoughts: No change. Way's punts have been good and so far Hopkins has been perfect in FGs including the game winner vs. the Jets.
One more roster prediction thread to go and I'll try to have that up as soon as or during the 4th preseason game.
