Burner’s Burning Questions – Week Three

The replacement referees are nothing but a memory and not a moment too soon. That’s the good news. The bad news is another loss has been pinned on the Redskins and the team needs a victory this week. Let’s get to the questions.

Q1: Trent Williams is nursing a knee injury and his backup is shaky at best. Is it time to look for another backup?
A: It would help if the Redskins could find a good tackle for depth purposes. The team has probably looked at the available players on the market and various practice squads. If one can be found, then he needs to be signed immediately.

Q2: Roy Helu was placed on injured reserve and Ryan Grant will take his place. How long will it be until we see Grant on the field and how effective can he be in this offense?
A: We could see him in some plays this weekend, but Grant likely needs another week before he can truly contribute on a regular basis. He will not be expected to carry the load, but it will be interesting to see if he can provide a spark when the regulars need a breather.

Q3: The defensive secondary seems to be in shambles. What can be done to improve the performance?
A: The return of Brandon Meriweather will help immensely, but it is unknown when he will be back on the field. The defensive line can help by getting more pressure on the opposing quarterback. Too, BBQ firmly believes that soft zones for this defense are a waste of time and the coaches should employ more man-to-man coverage schemes for the secondary.

Q4: There have been constant changes to the practice squad since the season began. Is this good for team unity?
A: It’s not a big deal and practice squad players come and go. The coaches are periodically looking for players who could provide depth on the fifty-three man roster and with several injuries early in the season, the newer players are needed.

Q5: Robert Griffin, III has taken a lot of hits in the first three games. It is a good idea to limit the carries and option plays?
A: Absolutely. The option plays should rarely be used – maybe once or twice a game and the designated running plays need to be limited as well. It is great to have such a young and dynamic player at the most important position on the team, but Griffin needs to be available for the long haul. It is a good idea to limit these plays and keep Griffin healthy.

That is all for this week. See you again next Friday.
