WFT to Retire Sean Taylor’s Number

Not sure I really understand Wright's apology.

He is basically saying we are sorry for making a colossal mistake that we are going to proceed with anyways despite what you all think of it. Really Jason?

Even the guy who seemingly was good at saying all the right things is now falling victim to Snyder's toxicity.

This is the part that I just can't get over:

"We didn't realize that so many of you wanted to make a trip to FedExField to be present for this moment"

How ignorant are the people in that organization? Do they not know the attendance has been awful? Do they still not know how much the fans despise the organization? This was a chance to fill the stadium if you announced it ahead of time. They still think fans will just show up because they schedule a game. Just unreal that they can't do anything right even with the stuff that should be easy.

Several friends who are not WFT fans reached out to me expressing their disgust. It is obvious to any adult that this is a pathetic and disgusting attempt to distract.

I appreciate the apology from Wright. It is certainly more than we would have gotten out of Allen. In fact, he would have tried to gaslight the fans into thinking this is what we had asked for.

In that spirit, I will assume this is genuine until Wright or the club does something to indicate that it isn't. However, I've been down this road before and so it won't take much for me to default back to not believing a thing.

Seeing how upset fans were yesterday, the only obvious response would’ve been to say ‘we ****ed up’ and reschedule. The idea that his family already being here is some insurmountable barrier is nonsense. You put them up in the Presidential Suite of the nicest area hotel, arrange an amazing weekend for them, and you invite them back at the rescheduled date.

I thought for the most part Wright did a good job ‘apologizing’ - he’s smart and knows how to sound humble and human (he should give Snyder lessons). But ultimately they are screwing their own fans and it’s totally unnecessary.

The whole idea that they only made 10,000 towels - that is really strange. It either reflects them lying, and that retiring the number really was a last minute attempt to distract, or these people are lacking intelligence. When you factor in jackasses who will grab handfuls of these or go back to get multiples, few of even season ticket holders will get one. Why would you create that situation? You’re a billion dollar company and you’re going discount on something like this?

Steve Rosenbaum (I think?), the guy who wrote Sean Taylor: going full speed, was just on the radio and he indicated that the retirement was supposed to be a surprise for the family, and they were having a hard time getting Pedro locked down and into town because Sean's Brother has a game at Rice tomorrow night so they weren't willing to travel to DC til Sunday morning.... fwiw.

I can kind of buy wanting it to be a surprise to retire the number 21 in the year 2021, but man its bad optics

Aren't they selling the towels only online and the proceeds go to his daughter?

I didn't know you could get one at the stadium.

They only had 10,000 made which is just stupid. They decided to sell them online after fans freaked out.

All the more reason to reschedule!

I heard Rosenbaum on there too and I think that the team perhaps wanted it to be a surprise but then may have belatedly realized that having this ceremony in a half-empty stadium would be a bad look. Hence the announcement yesterday that somewhat spoiled the surprise in an attempt to coax folks to buy tickets to the game.

Reason #78 why this has been completely botched - they set this up on a date when arguably ST’s biggest advocate, Joe Gibbs, couldn’t possibly attend due to NASCAR commitments. Pathetic.

Imagine the horror if the plan to honor Sean somehow got leaked and the fans actually knew and could plan for it. 🤦🏻‍♂️

That sounds like she’s been spoon-fed talking points directly from WFT PR.

Multiple sources saying STs family wasn’t aware of number being retired until yesterday. Guess that could’ve been designed to be ‘a surprise’, but that coupled with just 10,000 towels available makes it look very much like they added that aspect at the last minute (and this is where the accusations it was designed to divert attention away from the real news sound plausible).

The stuff about ‘delaying’ a Monday announcement because of the news coming out makes no sense. Lord knows that made all the difference, lol. And it’s not like they even bothered issuing a statement about the Gruden/email stuff. All they’ve done is pretend it has nothing to do with Washington.

But hey, Jason came out of a meeting to address it! My advice to Wright would be to not say another word. When you’re in a hole, stop digging.

Meanwhile you’ve got ‘Fan Ambassadors’ telling fans to STFU and stop being ‘so negative’ or turn in their fan cards.

I've also seen Fan Ambassadors irate about how they were supposed to be a connection between the team and the fans, and something like this got botched the way it did.

They aren’t all idiots - and that’s a valid point. Honestly, Jason Wright could have gone to any WFT forum and asked for ideas or for their plan to be vetted and it would be 1000x better than how this is going to go.

I cannot buy into the idea that Wright and company had no idea fans would want to come. That’s simply not possible. You think Joe Gibbs might’ve wanted to be there? The truth is, this was a half-ass plan with half-ass execution, and they plowed ahead with it anyway (and still are!) instead of stopping and doing a reset.

The irony in it all is that ST himself wouldn’t come to a celebration of his accomplishments if he were alive today. Guy hated attention of any kind and was one of the most shy and introverted ‘stars’ I’ve ever seen.

This BS is why I’ve lost most of my passion for this team. Organization under Snyder is just a complete shitshow and I’ve largely distanced myself particularly since the harassment scandal. I no longer have the patience to put up with this circus.

P.S. OF COURSE this was to divert attention from the email scandal.

I’m done spewing on it. At this point they’ll make the best of it and we’ll move on. They’ve done some serious damage to fan relations and belief with this goat rope though.
