Training Camp and Preseason Thread - Twitter Heavy

The LB corp is nothing to shake a stick at, either.

Foster, Bostic, Davis, Holcomb

its going to help the corners, but we need A LOT of help back there.

Is the DL scary good or the OL scary bad... or both?

That’s a good question :)

Don’t NFL offenses always look terrible early on though? And that’s got to be even more common given the extreme lack of practice time...

It seems, though, that the DL is getting to Haskins pretty often. Stuff that, if QB were allowed, would rack up a ton of hits and/or sacks. Is that a function of the plays being less-than-smooth or the OL being that bad?

My guess is that Geron Christian will not be the opening day starter at LT.

Rivera said they are giving him the first look but the support seemed tepid at best.

Would it surprise me to see a trade for a veteran tackle? No.

we're all rooting for Apke here, I think.

But, we have a ton of players that always look good in camp but then look subpar once regular season happens.

The thing that gives me hope with Apke is that he has the athletic ability. He’s just never had a defensive coach in the NFL to teach him how to play football. I don’t know how good a coach Chris Harris is, but I do know Del Rio and Rivera have had good track records with coaching defenses. So maybe we see a few guys who fit well in this system that we thought had no spot in the NFL.

I think we're in a wierd catch 22 scenatio with OLine and DLine.

Our DLine has such high expectations, that if they WEREN'T blowing up our OLine, we'd be worried about them being overrated. Then this thread would all be about what's wrong with them. Was it coaching? Is it coaching now? Or were they always overrated?

But they ARE looking the part, which is making our OLine (which obviously is not going to be an elite unit) look maybe worse than it is. So now we're discussing the OLine.

Put me in the camp of people who firmly believe that have an elite defense (hopefully!) can surely only benefit our Offense who will have to practice against it. It might not make our Offense elite, but just learning to play against the best in practice has surely got to result in us being better on that side of the ball too.

Side Note: I'm really loving how the offense is using the RB's at the moment. It's seeming to me like the last few years we suffered from an over complicated offense that was too predictable (sometimes for personnel issues, sometimes just plain bad play calling) and this is starting to look this year like everything is being simplified a little and we now have personnel (albeit unproven) who can really through an unpredictability spanner into the works. I like that. DEpends how this all plays out obviously, but we could be offensively better than I expected TBH.

I actually think we are right where we thought we would be. As Boone pointed out the Offense is usually behind the defense at this point in the game, this early in camp. Add to that a new system with no mini-camps, no OTAs, and limited playbook access. All of those things lead the cream to rise to the top. I don't think there's any question that Kerrigan > Moses. Young > Christian. Ioannidis > LG. Payne > Roullier. Sweat > Whatever TE is trying to block him.

We can HOPE that as things go on throughout camp, the development and execution of the system gets better. Protection audibles get more efficient. Scheme gets executed much more efficiently to help defend against the pass rush. This is an optimist type spin on things.

That said I still don't think we are talented enough, but I do think we can do some things the mitigate some of the concern when we've been in the system for months instead of days. We will see some good D-lines this year in Philly x2, LA Rams, Ravens, Steelers, 49ers and Bengals (surprisingly PFF rates them 10th). Those teams are going to cause problems if we don't get it figured out.

I agree Silent.

I think all through the pre-season leading up to this, we've all known that Offense ic where (most of) the questions are.

You're right, they're not going to be an elite group on the OLine, no chance of that. But if facing the likes of Kerrigan, Young, Ioannidis, Payne and Sweat on a regular basis in practice can lift them to an average status (and surely it has to doesn't it? How can you possibly practice against guys of that caliber and NOT get any better?!

if you can't keep Haskins upright we lose. plain and simple. The D is getting to him almost every play and it is not even on blitzing.

our OL is in need of SERIOUS work.

Agreed. I hope Charles can develop, he appears to gave the skillset but off field issues caused him to fall in the draft. I still think we need to uprgade tackle and likely a guard even if Charles pans out.

If we find ourselves picking top 3 again look at Penei Sewell out of Oregon. Could be our LT for the next 9 years

Edit: Sorry, just saw Boones post in the BBQ thread
