Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2020

I guess if the Jets were really ready to move him, I’d trust coach to figure out if the guy was a future problem or not. I’m like El though - not a fan of trading our young talent to get someone else’s young talent, especially when it’s unhappy young talent.

After watching for 3 years we need to move on from Sprinkle. He’s a poor receiver and has the speed of an offensive center in space.

If he was a devastating blocker that would OK in a #2, but he is simply average there.

I think we need to sign a veteran, perhaps late career who can come in and be a one year bridge for us.

Behind him you would have the Hentges, Moss and other youngsters to develop.

The last thing this team needs to do is pay yet another box safety mega millions.

The Redskins don’t need Adams and after paying what we did for Collins we really can’t afford to skew our cap to a complementary position rather than a lead one.

Free agency is still ongoing as we saw yesterday by the signing of Cam Newton by the Patriots. Could the Redskins make a move as well? I look at a controversial situation here and offer you an honest assessment.

No. Newton is much less of a gamble for NE.

Newton was hurt but by what Rivera has said Cam is a good teammate and leader.

Antonio Brown not only quit on his first team, Pittsburgh, but lobbied his way out of Oakland before he ever took a snap there.

His personal life from all accounts shows an irresponsible and volatile personality type whose actions continue to have repercussions.

Also, the league is going to slap a suspension on him when he is signed so any team will have to wait perhaps 8-10 games to get him on the field.

What is that worth to a team recovering from 3-13 with a new coach and roster filled with younger players?

We need more positive role models like AP and Thomas Davis.

100%

Brown would displace one of our young guys and potentially cost them their job... just for him to sit and wait for 8-10 games. I don't know that he would be able to hit the exempt list... but that MIGHT allow our 5th/6th guy to stay on the team while Brown is suspended, but you're still cutting 1 guy loose to make room for him. He likely would not be here for more than a year or 2, either by him wanting out, him getting suspended again, or if everything works out perfectly and he balls out, he might find his way to another payday somewhere else. That doesn't seem like enough output for me to want to bring him in....

MFer!

This is what we do. And of course, at one of our most vulnerable positions!

Karma for all you hating on a picture of a red wolf. J/K.

There are a few options out there in FA. Chris Hogan. Jermaine Kearse. Demaryius Thomas. Josh Gordon - if his suspension is lifted soon.

That's all this team needs now after all craziness of last year with Bruce and Trent is to now sign Josh Gordon or Antonio Brown.

This organization hasn't proven that it has the kind of foundation to keep players like that on the field and away from the suspended list or worse.

If the Patriots couldn't do it, I don't see the Redskins having much hope.

Possible Free Agent Targets
We are bringing back this feature for 2020 and BBQ has enlisted the help of several WFT pundits as well as input from yours truly. We have three people who have contributed thus far – Ian Cummings of Riggo’s Rag, Nathan Britton of Riggo’s Rag, and Mark Tyler of Hogs Haven. Obviously, the Redskins simply can’t sign all of these players. This list is simply some players who could fill a need and possibly be available in March.

Cordy Glenn, OT, Bengals

Off-Season Updates
The WFT cap room currently stands somewhere between $26M and $30M for 2020. Releases and re-structures (if they occur) could continue to increase the cap room considerably.

From Tom Peliserro of NFL Network:
“NFL teams are about to gain tens of millions of dollars in cap space.
The management council informed clubs that signing bonus proration -- not just unearned salary and bonuses -- will be removed from the 2020 cap immediately upon notification a player is opting out, per sources”.

Alex Smith wants to continue his playing career, but is that realistic? Will he give the WFT any cap relief? No one knows, but we’ll stay on top of it.

With Logan Thomas testing positive for C-19, he will go through several more days of quarantine. After that period of time, Thomas will need two straight negative tests before he can return.

Caleb Brantley and Josh Harvey-Clemons have decided to opt out of the 2020 season due to C-19. It is an interesting move and there could be a mutual agreement with the team.

The injury to Reuben Foster is serious, but he is working out and running sprints. Optimism is high for a full return this season.

The WFT recently picked up the fifth year option for Jonathan Allen. Look for a long term deal next offseason.

The WFT recently declined the fifth year option on Reuben Foster. A long term deal could still happen or the team may let him become a free agent after 2020.

Bryce Love and Jordan Brailford are hoping to see action on the football field for the first time in their WFT careers. Love could be in line for a lot of quality playing time. Brailford has uphill climb to make the final roster of fifty-three.

On the first page of this offseason thread and the second entry, we have the latest updates on coaching hires and football front office positions being filled. That entry will be updated as needed.

Look for a long term deal to be completed with Brandon Scherff next offseason.

Personal Thoughts
Here are some players that must have a superb offseason if they hope to be on the roster this fall according to BBQ: CB Greg Stroman, FS/ST Troy Apke, OT Geron Christian, and WR Trey Quinn.

With Ron Rivera as the coach, look for a more disciplined team and a locker room that has more accountability. It sounds like the “luxury resort” atmosphere is a thing of the past.

In Conclusion

The free agency updates will continue as new information is available.

WASHINGTON MAKES ROSTER MOVE

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Football Team announced today that they have made the following roster move:

The Washington Football Team activated the following player off the Physically Unable to Perform list:

LB Reuben Foster

-WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM
ESTABLISHED 1932-

So they can cut him, maybe... ? Or is he getting another shot even after cutting Guice?

I would think they give him a chance.

His accuser was found to be lying in court on a previous occasion so I don’t know you judge him on that alone.

But he’s definitely in one strike territory.

Another free agency update coming tomorrow.

Next offseason is going to be a huge challenge. Two P5 conferences and several G5 conferences have shifted football to the winter/spring. Smaller schools and independents are varied. It will be very challenging to do mock drafts and any draft analysis during the 2021 offseason.

If you have any players that you think the WFT should take a look at in 2021, just post it in the new 2021 offseason thread. I don't mind the extra work, but it will be a big headache when more college football rolls around in early 2021.

Thanks, everyone.
