STATEMENT FROM THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS:

In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks.

Dan Snyder, Owner of the Washington Redskins, stated, “This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field.”

Ron Rivera, Head Coach of the Washington Redskins remarked, “This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military.”

We believe this review can and will be conducted with the best interest of all in mind.

What in the hell does the military have to do with it Ron? I sort of wish, you know - since you don't even have your desk organized yet - that stay out of it :)

And. Here. We. Go.

Snyder's gonna cave, because he's spineless. He thinks his wallet is gonna hurt over the sponsorship deals being pulled, but hasn't even considered how much a name change will hurt his wallet.

One thing I noticed is that they didn’t mention consulting with Native American communities.

“...but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field.”

That’s what these things have come to. They don’t actually ask the supposed offended party. They decide completely apart from them. That is the saddest part of this whole sorry episode.

yea you can count me as another who will be done. I'm already considering a permanent change with all the BLM crap but they change the name and I'm done. I really didn't miss it last season, didn't see a single game. Pretty sad for a former season ticket holder but that's a pretty good summation of the state of this team the last 20 years.

Well, since the Native community hasn't really been offended for the most part by any of this, maybe they are asking the offended parties.

I do hope things eventually come around to the realization that getting offended is a choice, not an intrinsic value.

It would seem we’re heading towards kneeling to Xerxes on this one. Dan may as well name the team ‘Woke Warriors’ at this point.

What I would like to see is Dan not only telling the PC crowd to get f’d but show some effort in honoring the name. Something like employing tribes in the region for input and let their presence be known by say reserving sections of seating to Indians each game.

Maybe find a real sponsor (not fedex) that will donate $ to reservations or scholarships to Indians as well. As much as I love the HTTR band I’d even consider authentic powwow music in pregame. That shit would fire the crowd up for sure.

At the end of the day the team is a business. No matter how much the Dan would like to keep the name, if sponsors desert he's little choice. We all know he's passionate on this topic, but I'll find it hard faulting him for it. Will be hard to remain a fan.

What I would like to see:

In light of what is happening around the nation, I would like to see an open, honest and public dialog about the name with as much of the Native American population as is feasible. I really don't think anyone else needs be involved either, other than to watch and learn. Once the conversation has been had and all opinions heard, a decision can be made. Put simply, give Native Americans the last word and be done with it. If they are good with the name, everyone else should be too. If they are not good with the name, then the team and the fans should be good with a change. I don't see this as the business of the NFL, other teams, sponsors or media.

I know polls have been done and the number favor the Skins keeping the name. In at least one case, overwhelmingly so. I also know the sources of those polls has an agenda and was stunned when the data didn't support their position. I feel like that should tell us something but I would also like to see an independent body run a larger poll, perhaps even a formal referendum, among Native Americans that will put paid to this issue one way or the other for the balance of my lifetime.

Well...I have doubled respect for JDR! His reponse? "You can kiss my ass"!!!!!

Nobody cares about the Redskins team name - this is all a subtext to the bigscale, far-left power play unfolding.

We've endurred this before - happened during the 1960s. Lotta violence just like now. It took a while to stomp it out. Not so dure it will play out this way now - too much at stake for the insiders including trillions of dollars.

Best way to address the issue is for the team to come out and publicly support Native American participation.

Do what FSU did. In this case change the name to atribal confederation and share merchandising and other revenue as an actto improve people’s lives and cut off those while people that think they have to patronize Native-Americans and try and think for them, which when you come down to it is very insulting.

Twitter-generation has no guts.

I agree completely with this, if it can be done in an open and honest fashion. You would need people to get out of the way and let the Native American community fully drive this, but I don't think people will let that happen. The people who decide what is offensive and what is not offensive would have to give up the control they have now. They are so drunk on that control right now, they would never let any group speak for themselves if it contradicts what they see as offensive.

Hey! Time to start a new name contest! I have a few candidates admittedly lifted from elsewhere:

1. Virginia Redskins
2. Washington D-bags

Kal...not attacking you...but where exactly does this notion that if a group is offended they can obliterate language come from? Better expressed - is this an open-ended right?
