Journalism is so dead. 2nd line is an outright fabrication. It is NOT 'widely held to be a racist slur against Native Americans' - in fact, every attempt to demonstrate that basic contention has fallen woefully flat. But hey, don't let that stop you from stating it as 'fact' WJLA.

Wow! To top if off, the Redskins have been wiped from Nike.com

Everyone knew this was happening 5 years ago. Blackskin, Yellowskin, Redskin. You'd have to be stupid to think this name would ever last. Hopefully a new name brings better results.

There's a lot of stupid being expressed in the world today. I'm not sure it's limited to Redskins fans. I wouldn't underestimate Dan Snyder's stubbornness if I were you.

It's already over. He has nothing to gain by being the last person to hang on, except to look like a racist. He's done.

Nike will pile on within 24 hours, then AD and other players. It's 2020, not 1983.

It's already over. He has nothing to gain by being the last person to hang on, except to look like a racist. He's done.
There are tons of Redskins fans, and by all accounts, the majority of Native Americans, who don’t believe the name is in any way derogatory, much less racist. If you choose to believe it is, that’s all we’ll and good. But don’t pretend that’s some kind of universal truth and that those who disagree are dinosaurs or ill-willed.

At this point I think the change is inevitable. Snyder may not want to change the name. George Preston Marshall didnt want black guys on his team. It happened anyway.

You really think that’s an apt analogy?

I know we have this topic going on in a few different threads, but I'll express my thoughts here. I've always thought that when the day comes that they change the name, it will be because stupidity wins the day. I don't think anyone of us has ever heard the word Redskins used as a slur. Because people don’t use it as a slur. Context matters with words. If someone says they hate the Redskins, everyone knows they are talking about a football team. There is no other context to that word in 2020, nor has there been in a long, long time.

But it's not about context or connotation, it's about the small percentage of people who think they should be the ones who decide what is right and wrong in society. And they are usually people not from the same race, origin, religion, gender, etc. They are people who think they are smarter and know more than everyone else, which is why they can decide who is supposed to be offended by what. When the Washington Post took that survey a couple of years ago and 90% of Native Americans weren't offended by the name, that should have ended the discussion. You can't find 90% of people to agree on anything in this country. NOT ONE SINGLE THING. So this is one of the dumbest "This offends them and I know it" items.

On top of that, what will changing the name do for the Native American community? Will it help them with the issues they have in their community? Will it solve any problems they currently have? Will it make right the wrongs that have been done to them throughout history? No. It won't do a thing for them other than put them further out of our memory. Which is what the know-it-all deciders of who is offended want. If they can push out these groups that they are offended for, they can stop feeling guilty because they won't see them any more. Instead of reaching out to this community and listening to their problems and finding ways to solve them, they will just go and change a name they believe they should be offended by. Then they won't have to talk about them at their cocktail parties when the topic of football comes up. Instead they can brag about how they "solved their problems" by changing the name of a football team. What more can the Native American community want? We care. We changed the name.

I expect that we will start to hear more stories about people who are offended by the name. The truth keepers will be out in force trying to find the 10% to bring them to the forefront and make them seem like that it's the 90% who are offended. They will take polls and keep taking them until they get the results they want, then publish them like it's the only opinion. I've always been leery of polls as I know that people take them as much to prove a point as it is to gauge public opinion. If they take a poll and don't get the results they want, they can take another poll, call the people that confirmed their opinion, then call other people knowing that if they get the same number as before to agree with their opinion. They've now doubled their numbers to confirm their side of the argument. So I expect to see new polls take that will cause a massive shift in opinion with Native Americans that wasn't there just a few years ago.

As I said at the start, when the name changes, it will just confirm my belief that stupidity wins out. I'll be disappointed not only because my favorite team has to change their name, but because there is so little thought put into anything these days.

I really have no interest in casting judgement as to whether or not the name should be changed. I just think it will be.

My point is the just because an owner says “This thing will never happen” and is a stubborn SOB, that doesnt mean he will get his way forever. Cultures change. Sensibilities change. And, most importantly, money talks.

I think it happens sooner rather than later.

I didn’t care for the analogy - and I’ll leave it at that.

I think we could see this coming from a mile away with what's going on in the world right now.

Snyder can be as stubborn as he likes, but the world is currently being swept along in a tidal wave of protest and political correctness. I think it's a tide to forceful to resist at this point. At the end of the day all he's going to do is lose money and face by not doing a U-turn on his previous NEVER statement. As big as the Redskins are, they are small fish next to the global megacompanies like Pepsi, Fedex and Nike. They have billions of customers to keep happy, and if they're plotting to sail into the wind I don't think anyone else has much choice in the matter. This also feels like it's just the tip of the iceberg. Now that the big companies have come out against it, the rest will follow. Then the players. etc etc.

It's not moving from a PR nuisance, to a full blown PR nightmare for Snyder, and it's going to start hitting him in the wallet, and that's the big motivating factor here.

Now, this isn't me agreeing. I'll be gutted not to have the Redskins name anymore. Being in the UK, I was in the dark about any racial conontations it had for years. To me, it is and always has been simply the name of the football team I root for.

That said... if it changes it changes. They've changed names before (albeit a loooooooong time ago) and they've changed logos, and stadiums... I can live with it. And if anything, I'd like the change to be sooner rather than later. With Rivera on board an Allen finally gone, it almost seems like we need a fresh start.

As long as the Burgundy and Gold stays I think I'm good. :)

I don't know whether Snyder can 'resist' the current purge mentality. The NFL is a business, and many times businesses feel forced to make changes that even their own employees and customers don't like. Whether I'm 'done' as many Redskins fans say they will be if/when it happens, I don't know. I find myself withdrawing from a lot of things in 'today's America', so maybe NFL football will be the next aspect of my life that I decide brings more consternation and aggravation than I am willing to navigate.

Now that corporate sponsors are pushing it, I think this is a done deal, whether Dan knows it or not. Hell, the CEO of FedEx is a minority owner of the Skins. That has to feel like a betrayal to Dan.

But at the end of the day, as someone else has said, money talks in this world. I expect this to be the last season our team plays under the name Redskins.

Love all the "whitesplaining" going on to Native Americans.
It's basically: "You're not offended??!! Let us tell you why you should be..."

Disappointed that some Redskins fans are so weak in the knees.

Never bend a knee to the Rage Mob...ever.

A name change itself wouldn't bother me. The reasons possibly forcing a name change are what bothers me. I won't start rooting for another team, I'll just stop rooting for this one. I'm a football fan, so I'll still be watching. Although without a team, I suspect my interest will fade with time. I don't like this world anymore. This round of Jumanji sucks.

I didn’t care for the analogy - and I’ll leave it at that.

It wasn't an analogy. It was an example.

I'm not equating the nature of the changes, only that in my example the change eventually took place, despite serious pushback from the owner.

I realize this is a touchy subject so I'm not even going to offer an opinion on it, other than to say I think it's going to happen.

Skins press release this morning indicates that a formal review of the name will take place.
