Dwayne Haskins- Improving His Physique

To be 'fair' to Elephant, I think we'd all share in some eye-rolling and concern if Haskins were down in Florida, sharing a hotel room, strippers, and weed with Antonio Brown for his vacation. I wouldn't want our young QB anywhere near that douchebag. But it doesn't sound like this is anything like that. So, for me, it's a non-story. And as I've said a hundred times before, why are we referencing Haskins as if he's a bad seed, has no character, etc...? Did he have even a sniff of trouble being a good citizen at OSU? Has he had brushes with the law? Has he been in trouble in any way that we are aware of?

Absolutely we'd be concerned in that scenario ... my snarky (sorry, it's early and raining and two months into cooped-up-edness) take was a reaction to how quickly we make judgments based on at best incomplete and/or misleading headlines. I'm as guilty as anyone of making them.

Marquise Brown is his Cousin, so the connection there is easy. That also likely brought Lamar Jackson into the mix.

I BELIEVE AB lives down in Fort Lauderdale where this little 'practice' took place.

Here is a video from 2011 with Ocho Cinco and AB working out

Here is one with Gino Smith and AB working out in 2019

This article states that there were more than 24 college and NFL players at this park working out together

By 9:30 a.m., Holiday Park's football field was filled with more than two dozen football players - college and pros - looking to get some field work in, and they did just that for roughly two hours.

"If you want to be the best you have to stay ready," said Brown, a seven-time Pro Bowler who spent all but one game of the 2019 season out of football because of off-field troubles that prompted the New England Patriots to release him in late September.

These commando workouts - which have been taking place in South Florida for years, but usually not this time of year because of organized team activities and minicamps - are football players' only outlet for on-field work this spring because the coronavirus pandemic has shut down the NFL's offseason program, and most parks until this week.

But twice a week these workouts and throwing sessions have been happening all across South Florida for weeks now.

"We came out here last week and they ran us off because the park was supposed to be closed," said Cleveland Browns receiver JoJo Natson, a former Boyd Anderson standout who has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted out of the University of Akron in 2017. "I'm glad we could get the work in today. We been going from park to park trying to get it in. Hopefully it can stay here."

It also says that these types of workouts happen twice a week. My assumption with all this is that Ocho Cinco and others including AB have been getting together down there and Haskins decided to join them to get the reps. Haskins tweeted last year that he wanted us to bring AB in, so who knows if they have any sort of a friendship beyond this, but I don't see anything to lead me to believe that Haskins initiated this, or that they're spending time socially.

We should probably now also conclude that, at the very least, the following individuals are of questionable character and judgement:

Lamar Jackson
Geno Smith
Stephon Diggs
Marquise Brown
Chad Johnson

Oh, and the Seattle Seahawks.

Nope. Just poor judgment.

In my own mind, speculating like EVERYONE else, at a certain point I don't care. In the back of my mind, however, is this nagging thought that Haskins will develop into a prima donna lockerroom problem one day. For rhe moment, as long as these cats don't interfere with what Rivera and Turner want the young man to absorb, so what (even if they are also providing non-football specific advice).

The list of people with poor judgment grows ...

Agreed that I'd have been okay with Haskins not tweeting about bringing in AB last year. Never been a fan of players publicly playing GM ... regardless of my opinion about the player they're pimping for. I think Portis did it, RG3 I think did .. it might be innocent enough but just makes me cringe a bit. I want to tell them "stay in your lane, fellas."

100% agree with that, although I think with Haskins it’s less about arrogance than being a clueless rookie. I equate it to the end zone selfie, not a sign he’s a prima donna, more learning what it is to be a professional.

It's obvious what your concern is. I just think posting videos as if 'hanging out with him' means he endorses that behavior or is somehow linked to it - kinda sucks :) I don't know the details and doesn't sound like you do either. My guess is, he's working out somewhere where a number of other NFL (and former NFL) guys are doing the same? I noticed you didn't mention any of the other players, only Brown? For all we know, they may have just been at the same facility.

If you know more, say so.

What I don't like is always assuming the worst about the guy. That's what this is.

And no - I don't want Antonio Brown on my team. Stupid fans have been lobbying on that idea forever, it's nothing new.
There you go, minimizing again.

None of what you or Mr. Pinstripe suggest matters, the optics are that our young QB, who is questionably making poor decisions (you've admitted as much yourself), is hanging out with the worst decision maker in the NFL in the last several years.

If my son is hanging out in a crowd, for any reason, with the likes of a man who screams vulgarities at police officers in front of his children, I would question my own son's decision making.

Seriously, this isn't a good look for Haskins.

'
There you go putting words in my mouth.

I never said, I never inferred Haskins was of questionable character, just that he made a poor decision to be involved with Antonio Brown.

And yes, I think it's a poor optic for the rest of those players, too...not that any of them are of questionable character!

That dude should be treated like a pariah, not welcomed into a situation you're supposed to be working on getting better.

As for the Seattle Seahawks? You do know how dirty they are, what type of players Pete fields, right? Golden Tate spit in my brother in laws face. That's the Seattle Seahawks. So yeah, this is something you'd expect from them.

First of all, you knew exactly what the majority response would be when you posted that - and that's why you posted it. Perfectly fine but you should 100% expect to get push back.

As far as me 'minimizing', before one can characterize it that way, you'd have to assume that your 'concerns' about 'what this means' are valid. So far, you are the only one who views this as some meaningful sign. You haven't given a shred of anything suggesting this is more than what it appears to be, a bunch of NFL players working out, with Antonio Brown happening to be there. When you do provide something other than supposition, maybe opinions change.

Your son isn't even 10 years old. We're talking about a grown man. I'm pretty sure that Haskins isn't going to absorb dysfunction and unprofessionalism by osmosis here. There are 'good looks' and then there is looking to criticize. I am as 'old school' as they come. I don't want guys on my team who aren't high character guys. Rivera has already surgically removed some of the ones with questionable character. I have zero concerns about Haskins character (even if I'd prefer he, and all his teammates, minimize their time on social media - cause 'ok boomer' is me). But even more than that, I have absolute confidence if there is anything concerning going on with our assumed future starter at QB, that Rivera is going to be all over it.

Haskins is taking part in informal workouts with up to a couple dozen other NFL players ... one of which included AB ... that someone tweeted about.

End of story for me.

Joe Flacco, Brad Johnson, Nick Foles, Jeff Hostetler all won Super Bowls.

While great qbs like Brady, Montana, Elway won Super Bowls by the bushel if you notice the Patriots had top defenses 2001-2005 and Elway was 0-3 before Denver drafted Terrell Davis and posted a upper echelon defense.

The 1984 49ers were 15-1 but it is forgotten they had not only their offensive stars but the #1 defense in the NFC.

This is the long way around to say that Dwayne Haskins doesn’t have to become Aaron Rodgers to justify the pick, any more than if he becomes a star we may not win a title if we continue to have the 29th ranked defense.

We need a 53 man roster top to bottom.

To revisit ..... this is important. Kid has transformed his physique in one offseason. He ain’t coasting.
Did anyone say he was coasting?

Can't have it both ways. Come in as a dough boy...transform into a chiseled God that oddly seems to attract some. What does this say about character? Can't really say. He finally gets it? or......He didn't get it/doesn't get it but adjusts as buffeted by experience.

Personally, I don't care. The Skins have had one too many widgets along the way. If RR is as adverstised, then I will applaud the mindset of perform or get the H outta FEDEX-Dodge.

You guys are funny :) Because none of the rest of us human beings have ever fluctuated in terms of our weight or fitness level, right? I get that Haskins is a pro athlete and the expectations for fitness level are high (and should be), especially for a high NFL draft pick. But maybe he had some minor injuries that kept him from coming into camp in 2019 in peak shape? Maybe he's a stress eater and that was his way of dealing with the pressure? Who the hell knows? There are a lot of reasons folks pick up or shed weight and in my opinion, most of them don't really speak to who we are as individuals to any great degree.

Why is it so hard to simply say 'Man, he looks like he's in incredible shape - that's awesome!'

Why?

1. I have never really been into other men's physiques. Just sayin. Back in the day, the Rock Cartwright (or whatever the player's name was) stuff was kinda creepy to tell the truth.
2. I agree it's largely a sideshow.
3. I'm not really down with coddling grown-up children. He's a 20+ year old millionaire.
4. In my mind, most of this is just media porno anyway.

All I care about is Haskins earning his keep. I'm not interested in his opinions, his workouts, etc. We'll endure plenty of that if he actually succeeds. I would like to see the young man succeed since that means the Skins are watchable again - before the NFL completes its current journey of self-destruction.

You gotta think of it like this:

he went from a college player probably on a meal plan provided by his school due to "not being paid" to a millionaire who can afford steak AND shrimp in the same meal! I know when I got my first good paying IT job I went up in weight.

Kid looks good. his throws seem to be sharp, he is explaining them as we watch videos, and he is getting chemistry with his teammates.

There are certain things that I feel 'you should be doing' in regards to the NFL and success.

1. Beat up on bad teams when you play them.

2. Show natural progression over course of season.... see above

3. Show growth in maturity. This is usually a multi-step process.

4. Show dedication to bettering self as player

see picture above. The workout videos appear to not just be a showcase. He's putting in the work when the camera is off.

The list goes on, but these are things Haskins has shown imho. Now none of this matters, because they are things that he 'should' be doing. They don't make him 'special,' or 'elite.' They do however show me that at a minimum, he can do the things that a lot of people deem 'necessary' to execute the job. Now it's time to take more steps.

I like what I've seen to this point, and he hasn't shown me enough to make me fully question his future. There were a few things that were concerning, but they appear to have been addressed. He's going to be expected to go beyond these basic things very quickly due to the circumstances of what is in front of him. It's on him to accelerate the process.
