The sage veteran and the kid talk about what it means, and doesn't mean to be a 'Black QB'.

I am so tired of the race card coming out. Did anyone at any time refer to Haskins as a "black QB"?

serious question. I don't even think I remember it about RG III.

I truly can't stand Doug. Dude had half a season and one game to now be a "legend" in this organization.

Well - it was a helluva game :) I respect Williams for his take here. He's making the same point you are - that you're a QB or you're not. Doesn't require any other descriptors. The hilarious thing is, whoever is doing the interview, apparently not hearing one word of what Williams said. His closing question is about whether they're proud to be a starting 'Black QB' in the NFL. Did you not hear a word of the previous 4 minutes?

I don't think the average NFL fan notices or cares about what race their QB is. We're too focused on wanting to win games to worry about that. I do think there is a subtle racist idea that 'Black QBs' are only good because of their 'athleticism' and that they aren't as 'cerebral' as caucasian QBs. It's not said out loud obviously, but I think it's why it has taken so long for us to see a significant number of teams with minority QBs under center.

As for Williams - throwing 4 TDs in a single quarter in a Super Bowl - that is legendary by any definition and it is a feat that will never be matched imho. There's only 1 other QB that's thrown that many TDs in a Super Bowl half (Steve Young), much less in a quarter. But you're right that as an overall QB Williams wasn't a HOFer by any stretch. He did lift the hapless Bucs out of historic misery with 2 winning seasons out of 3 as a fulltime starter. Bucs fans probably recall him as fondly for that as we do for that Super Bowl performance.

Timmy Smith still holds a record, too. That game was won by The Hogs plain and simple.

Here is also something usually skipped; Ricky Sanders had 193 yards receiving and 2 TDs.

Doug had a great quarter in that game and I won't deny it. But, he was replaced the next year by Rypein who gets barely any recognition in comparison even though he had a better overall season in 91 and dominated the entire league.

I still can't for the life of me figure out why he was hired as an executive here when he has zero experience as one.

DW got hired because Snyder wants to milk the glory years for all its worth. And I could be wrong, but I thought Douglas had some experience or something similiar with The Buccaneers?

because its not a real job to begin with. Like many jobs in professional sports.

Williams has gone down in DC history for basically one quarter of great football. No one will be critical of that for obvious reasons. He wasn’t a great QB in-general in any stretch of the idea. If Jay Schrader wasn’t such a flaming prick and crybaby, I don’t know if even the fanbase would have been so pro-DW.

Man, I ain't gonna' hate on Doug. When I first started watching the NFL as a kid, he and Warren Moon were the only QBs that looked like me. Is Doug some ace-GM talent eye-for-talent guy? No? But he is able to exist both in the management sphere, and relate to today's player? By all accounts he can, and he's a good dude. I think he is in a role more tailored for him now. With all of the "cleaning-house" that Ron is doing, I don't think he is keeping Doug around just to keep him around. We'll see how it goes. And hey - he won a Super Bowl for my favorite team! HTTR

Don't forget, he coached Grambling, too.

I do recall it coming up with Griffin. It came up quite a bit the first half of his rookie season, and I know some of it was from the black community questioning if he was black enough, especially as his fiancee was white.

With the sheer amount of pundits in the entertainment reporting industry that currently exists, it's always going to be coming up, because airtime needs to filled out somehow....but in the end, the important point is made: either you are a QB, and qualified to be so, or you aren't. Race shouldn't enter in to the discussion at all, as it really shouldn't matter. Only merit should.

yeah, the "cornball brother" thing. I remember that. But, that had less to do with the ability of black people to "be smart enough" to play the QB position, and whether he was black enough for people. They were both horrible moments in media history.

I remember on the "other site" when he was hired and people were making memes "Kneel before Zorn"

yeah, those didn't age well at all.

Doug Williams is a good man, a good human being and has earned his keep.

As for the Riverboat Pilot....be careful what you wish for......

I have no idea what to expect in terms of success with Rivera. But it's nice to have a pro and a grownup at the helm. He is definitely a class act. I think he might be a better coach than he gets credit for, but that remains to be seen.

how has he earned his keep? Being a good person doesn't guarantee you a job. I just saw my VP walked out of the office who was well liked by all.
