Making the case

By John Pappas

The young guys on the Washington Redskins were looking to make their mark last night. With initial cuts a week from Tuesday, players on the bubble were trying to step up and be noticed.

There are probably only a few roster spots to be had. Third quarterback is now in play, according to head coach Jim Zorn. Fifth wide receiver is definitely up for grabs. Punt return/fourth running back is something the team is considering, and also cornerback after the starters and nickelback are set.

Here are five players who made a case for themselves last night. Each has an opportunity to secure a spot in September.

1. Chase Daniel, third quarterback – Daniel was the excitement at quarterback last night. He was also the reason the Redskins won. Daniel went 6-for-8 for 58 yards and 2 touchdowns. He showed poise, and the ability to make a play. It is possible the offense was tailored down for Daniel, but he made the most of his first appearance in an NFL game.

Following the game Zorn announced that the third quarterback position is in play. If Daniels plays like last night this Friday, he could end up with the job.

2. Marko Mitchell, receiver – Beginning in the scrimmage, Mitchell began to show that he is a gamer. Mitchell went 3-for-21 with a touchdown, the team’s first of the preseason. He is a big body receiver with good hands, ala Malcolm Kelly.
