TRAINING CAMP 2010

Question:

"McNabb dropped back seven steps early on, and threw a picture perfect bomb down the middle to a wide open Santana Moss, who could not catch up to the overthrown ball."

By "picture perfect" you mean spiral, etc.? Because if it was overthrown, clearly it wasn't perfect...

Enjoyed the trip to Training Camp today thoroughly! Here's a few of my observations:

1.) I was about to walk out to try to beat some traffic, but decided to go capture a few more photos as the players walked into the locker room. Standing at the door I noticed a slew of cameras surrounding a player, looked closer to see Big Al trudging up the steps without acknowledging the media. He did take the time to sign an autograph for a young man who made it through the crowd but he did not look happy.

2.) Trent Williams did not impress me on the field as much as he embraced the intangibles that make a professional athlete a pro. Not only did he carry D-Hall's gear off the field, he stuck around and signed autographs for about 30 minutes after practice. Other players like Fred Davis, Chris Cooley, Phillip Daniels, London Fletcher, Brian Orakpo and several others took the time as well. Fred Davis took more time than anyone else. But it was good to see Williams take that part of being here head on.

3.) I had a funny interaction with Chad Rhinehart. I stand about 5'9" tall, but I weigh about 220, not fat but kinda thick. He walked over as I was taking photos and I said to him, "You're lucky I am not on the defensive line!" He just looked at me, smiled and said, "Ha!" I said, "what do you mean?" He said, "you look more like a kicker!" LOL!

4.) It looks like Colt Brennan may not make it through camp. Like John said, he does not look bad, but Bartel looks pretty sharp and he is pretty big too.

5.) For a 31 year old coach, Kyle Shanahan has more presence than Jim Zorn ever did. I am not trying to bash Zorn, I am just amazed at this young man's poise.

6.) Malcom Kelly does have some pretty good hands! I have a great photo of him making a one handed grab. But he just did not look sharp in his routes. He also sat out a few series. I am not impressed even though he is nursing a hamstring injury.

7.) Larry Johnson wants to prove something out there! He did not quit on any play! Even when the defense had stopped, Johnson kept motoring down the field another 15-20 yards on every play!

can someone talk about Portis? He dropped a grip of weight, seems to have lost the diva attitude and is supposed to be happy.

whats up with him today?

On the field he was sharp on some plays and not so much on others. I guess you could say he was a bit inconsistent. Hit the holes quick. Looks like he has a quick step, but he dropped a few passes, passes he should have caught.

The one concern I have with CP is his seeming demand to be different than every other player on the field. I know this may sound petty, but he wore his white jersey all cinched up under his pads so it looked like he was wearing a yellow jersey. Why not just be like the other offensive players? I don't know, maybe that's just me, but it seems like he is going against the grain.

edit: been a long day, I am gonna post some photos later.

if thats all he is diong out of line i am cool with it...but LJ seems to be already knocking on the door.

Mike, from what I have seen, I have to say CP is a much more talented RB. He still has that burst, and after looking through my images I have noticed he still has incredible vision!

LJ, has those same characteristics, CP just looks more natural doing it. LJ, on the other hand, worked harder than anybody on the offensive side of the ball. It still looks like the position is Portis' to lose. Provided he keeps his head, he won't.

I do have to say Willie Parker looked pretty good too. He did not impress the way the other guys did, but he looked good.

It is kinda weird seeing this guy wearing B&G.

First of all, thank you Pappas and El-I've been itching to find out what this "new" Redskins team looked like in action and you guys are providing some interesting info. Got Trent Williams up against Orakpo, eh? That's kind of like the old "Learn how to swim by being thrown into the water at the deep end of the pool"...cool, you wanna be the best go up against the best.

Bartel-this one intrigues me-it sounds like he's showing some good stuff. I'm wondering if he might wind up as #2 QB possibly?

The news about Andre Carter seems positive so far-I was wondering how he might adjust to the new D scheme-granted all this is very early in the training procedure but I'm kinda liking what I'm hearing so far.

Again, thanks guys, for the info and pics.

Yep - we appreciate you sharing Elephant!

Hey guys,
I will be at TC on the 7th. I was talking with Boone and I'm hoping already to do a recap over on IIWII. But I plan on taking a million pictures and I plan on making some of them exclusive to BGO and also do a similar recap here.

If there is anything in particular that you want me to focus on, let me know I'll see what I can do. Mind you, that this won't be close to what Pappas and co. have done (seriously John, best coverage on the web for TC period) but I'm hoping to get some nice things for my fellow BGOers.

good deal man!

once the pads are on and real hitting is going on in the trenches - I'm interested in the average gain per run inside the DEs.

Mike, this came from this mornings practice from Gary Fitzgerald's practice report about CP-just in case you didn't happen to catch it.

Portis Play

Clinton Portis took a handoff and cut right.

He escaped Brian Orakpo and raced to the outside.

Open field ahead.

Portis ran downfield, continuing to elude Orakpo, for a long gain.

It was impressive because Portis out-ran Orakpo and flashed impressive speed.

Portis is listed at 5-11 and 218 pounds, and he seems noticeably quicker than in previous years
