REDSKINS SIGN CB JEROME MURPHY;
PLACE S BRANDON MERIWEATHER ON RESERVE/INJURED LIST

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent cornerback Jerome Murphy. The team also placed safety Brandon Meriweather on its Reserve/Injured list.

Murphy (6-0, 200) was originally selected by the St. Louis Rams in the third round (65th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. Murphy appeared in 14 games with St. Louis as a rookie, registering 20 tackles (16 solo), one interception, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was acquired on waivers by the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 2, 2012, appearing for the Saints in Weeks 1-2 before being waived on Sept. 17. He was acquired on waivers by the Detroit Lions on Sept. 19 and appeared in one game before being released on Sept. 29.

Murphy, 25, played collegiately at South Florida, where he started 25 of the 51 career games in which he appeared from 2005-09. He compiled 202 tackles (148 solo), eight interceptions, 18 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and three fumbles recovered.

Murphy attended Elizabeth H.S. in Elizabeth, N.J., where he was named second team All-State after compiling 89 tackles and eight interceptions as a senior. He was born Jan. 13, 1987, in Elizabeth, N.J.

Meriweather, 28, appeared in one game with Washington after signing with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent on March 15, 2012. In his Redskins debut last Sunday, Meriweather registered seven tackles (three solo), two passes defensed and an interception.

If there ever was a waste of a roster spot, it was Meriweather. I was / am watching the game and the commentators said that he had a problem with his left knee all year, and now he's done the ACL in his right knee.

Just what we need - a player with TWO dodgy knees!

When I mean dodgy, I mean suspect, unreliable, not fully healthy.

Hopefully, he'll get BOTH knees repaired at the same time or else we'll have to go through all this crap again next year!

For him to be signed initially, he must have an X factor stashed away somewhere, so maybe I'm missing something, but surely, to prove your worth you have to at least play!

How many years did he sign for?

I have some good news, and bad news about this. Take it for what it is worth.

Martin Mayhew dumped him.....the GM, and former CB of the Skins. But at least he saw something to even bring him in.

Whatever "positive" they saw in him initially when they signed him prior to the season, surely has been negated by what they've seen in him, since that signing, which, let's not forget, is actually more of the same "negative" issues he had BEFORE we signed him.

You saw our roster before we signed him, right? THAT'S why he got a contract.

Meriweather signed a 2-year, $6M contract. This year, he got $2.450M of which $1.0M was a signing bonus. 2013 CAP hit is $3.5M.

Our biggest CAP hits for next year are:
Garcon - $8.8M
Hall - $8.3M
Trent Williams - $6.6M
Cofield - $6.45M
Moss - $6.317M
Fletcher - $6.2M

Honorable mentions:
Joshua Morgan - $5.350M
Josh Wilson - $5.334M

I thought I read somewhere that Hall's contract was mostly front-loaded, and if he was to be released next year, the cap hit would be minimal.

However, Garcon's numbers are just under what an AFL team has for a salary cap for 44 players.
