REDSKINS SIGN S MADIEU WILLIAMS

ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent safety Madieu (Muh-DEE-oo) Williams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Williams (6-1, 203) was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round (56th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft out of Maryland. In eight NFL seasons, he has played in 103 regular season games with 86 starts, and recorded 498 tackles, 12 interceptions, 43 passes defensed, four recovered and forced fumbles and 4.5 sacks.

Last season, Williams played in 15 games with three starts for the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to joining San Francisco, he played three seasons (2008-10) for the Minnesota Vikings, earning the 2010 Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his service to community, both in the U.S. and overseas. He spent his first four seasons (2004-07) with Cincinnati, earning USA Today All-Joe Team honors in 2006.

Williams played collegiately at Towson State (Md.) before transferring to Maryland as a walk-on. He started 27 games during his final two seasons with the Terps, earning second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2003.

Williams was born on Oct. 18, 1981, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He attended Duval H.S. in Lanham, Md., where he was a two-year starter at cornerback and an all-county selection.
