REDSKINS RE-SIGN S BRANDON MERIWEATHER

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have re-signed safety Brandon Meriweather. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Meriweather (5-11, 200) was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round (24th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. In seven NFL seasons, the two-time Pro Bowler has appeared in 89 career regular season games with 58 starts with the New England Patriots (2007-10), Chicago Bears (2011) and Washington Redskins (2012-13).

For his career, Meriweather has posted 349 tackles (243 solo), 34 passes defensed, 15 interceptions (one returned for touchdown), five forced fumbles, three sacks and two fumbles recovered. Last season, he started all 13 games in which he appeared for Washington, being credited by coaches with 93 tackles (59 solo) while also recording two interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Meriweather played collegiately at Miami (Fla.) from 2002-06. He started 21 games at strong safety, six at free safety, three at cornerback and one at nickel back during his career and twice earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team honors (2005, 2006). He holds the Miami career-record for tackles by a defensive back with 293 tackles, and his 182 career solo tackles broke the school’s all-time record for safeties previously held by Bennie Blades (155).

Meriweather, 30, attended Apopka H.S., which he led to the Florida Class 6A championship as a senior in 2001. He was born on Jan. 14, 1984.

Meriweather is what he is, an average NFL safety. He's not going to be an embarrassment out there but he's not going to be a consistent playmaker either.

Combining him with Ryan Clark at 35 doesn't sound all that appetizing does it?

No Sir. It does not.

I'm still hoping Thomas, and maybe even Rambo, will step in, and step up.

I still say find another corner, put Hall at FS, with Meriweather at SS and let it rip. That gives the younger guys time to develop if they're going to.

It will be interesting to see the tenor of this team under Gruden.

Shanahan, while ostensibly a hard ass, seemed to put up with a lot of mental mistakes and poor on the field judgment from some of his veterans.

Shannon Sharpe said visiting the Redskins practices he barely recognized Mike as the coach he knew years before.

He said players would drop balls and make simple mistakes and things were let go.

In Denver Sharpe said Mike used to restart practice if the focus wasn't there.

Meriweather will be under a microscope IMO with Allen and Gruden.

I don't see those crown of the helmet hits and unsportsmanlike penalties being tolerated.
