REDSKINS PLACE FRANCHISE TAG ON BRIAN ORAKPO

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Brian Orakpo.

Orakpo (6-4, 257) led the Redskins in sacks for the fourth time in his five-year career in 2013, returning after sustaining a season-ending injury in Week 2 of the 2012 season. Last season he finished with 70 tackles (47 solo), double-digit sacks (10) and had his first interception of his career against Chicago, which he returned 29 yards for his first career touchdown.

Orakpo was originally selected by the Redskins in the first round (13th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. For his career, he has appeared in 64 regular season games, all starts, compiling 283 tackles (195 solo), 39.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one interception returned for a touchdown. His 39.5 sacks rank fifth on the Redskins all-time sack list.

Orakpo, 27, played collegiately at Texas from 2004-08, posting 132 tackles (93 solo), 22 sacks, 38 tackles for a loss, 62 pressures, six passes defensed, six forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. During his senior year in 2008, he garnered several accolades including the Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player), Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman), Hendricks Award (nation’s top defensive end), unanimous first-team All-America and All-Big 12 selections and consensus Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Orakpo was born on July 31, 1986, and was a two-time first-team all-district selection for the Lamar H.S. Redskins in Houston.

Per ESPN 980
Redskins opted for non-exclusive franchise tag. Orakpo can still get a deal elsewhere, but compensation to the Redskins would have to be agreed on between the two teams.

Skins are tagging Brian with the OLB tag which is priced at $11.455 M. Brian is looking to get the DE tag which is priced at $13.116 M.

This is a smart move by the club.

We can handle a one year big cap number to give him a year under Haslett's "turn him loose" plans, and find out if he's the man.

Or, if some team wants to give us some draft picks we feel are worth it, we can let him walk, and get something for him.

I would hope that was clarified with the league office before the decision. The NFLPA could then appeal I suppose, but with it being an issue I hope we at least checked with the NFL first.

He's pissing in the wind. Didn't some site already show that he dropped back into coverage more than other OLB's?

He's a linebacker. Period.

Great. What are we gonna beat ourselves up about next?

There's always the "should Robert run the option" discussion. That could take us well into OTA's and training camp....

Especially since there are talks going on in the upper echelon of the NFL about making a new rule to keep Option QB's safer...

Mara will never allow that. It benefits us too much.

Anyway, welcome back Brian Orakpo...I think you're getting more money than you deserve, but welcome back nonetheless. Now prove those of us opposed to paying you too much wrong.

Ya, I saw the article on that. The way I see it is, the way the rule works now is just fine, it's the enforcement end of it that needs fixing. I've seen Robert, and other QB throw up there hands immediately after the exchange as stated by the rules in place, and still get whacked or pushed to the ground. The ref's are directing more of their attention to the lines, and the hit or shove on the QB is often missed. Ya want to fix it, put another set of eyes on the field focused on the QB if you're really worried about them.

Ultimately, the Redskins were in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type of situation with Brian.

It's hard to justify letting one of your best defensive players walk coming off a 3-13 season with a horrid defensive showing. At the same time, Brian hasn't picked up his performance to the point where he's cemented himself as one of the top 3 or 4 guys at his position and clearly justified receiving an $11M sum for a year.

If anything, this move buys us time in what is likely a transition year for the franchise. I'm all for it.
