On what they can take away from the game:
“Like I told our team, I was proud of the way they fought. We have to eliminate some of those mistakes in the football game. We had the opportunity to do it and get it done, but you can't make those mistakes that we made and expect to win. We have to play cleaner and be more consistent. Like I said, we did have some great effort out there.”
On his view of the negated touchdown pass to wide receiver Aldrick Robinson:
“Well, my understanding of the rule is you have to have ball security all the way through the catch, and it looked to me like the ball did hit the ground, so I'm not surprised that it was overturned.”
On quarterback Robert Griffin III's performance:
“Like I said, we'll assess it a little more. Out of all those plays, you don't get a chance to see everything. Sometimes you miss a few, and I don't like to assess the play of anybody until I look at the film. We had the opportunities to get things done and win the football game. We got the ball with first-and-10 on the 14-yard line. We lined up a little too close on the line of scrimmage, and that puts us in a tough situation. On the next play, we had a quarterback keep and we had a turnover, and obviously we had the fumble late in the game. You can't turn the football over – different things that beat yourself. You can't do that, and we haven't done that in the past. If you don't have those mistakes you win those football games.”
On the current state of the team:
“You find out how tough you are. There's nothing you can do about it but go back and be tough on yourself and try to eliminate mistakes. That's what our football team will do. We'll come back be tough on ourselves. Everybody's disciplined. Especially when you lose a game like that at home with the type of fans that we have. We had great support today. Especially after you start off 0-2, the fans were there for us. We really appreciated it. We're just disappointed that we couldn't find a way to win."
On Griffin III fumbling while sliding/diving:
“Well, to be honest with you, that's something that happens. You know, he was sliding forward, all of a sudden, things like that happen. Why? You don't know why, but I've seen it happen to a lot of different people. We'll work on it, and hopefully we'll have a little bit more ball security when he gets put in that situation. Next time, he'll do a normal slide instead of going headfirst. It’s a little bit tougher when you don't practice that."
On his preference on sliding techniques:
“I've had quarterbacks who have gone headfirst all the time who want to protect themselves and get the extra yard. They feel more comfortable doing that than sliding, so a lot of guys do it different ways. It kind of comes second nature to you."
On Griffin III's interception:
"First of all, you get behind. You get back in the dropback passing game and you're going to have more turnovers. You don't want to throw as many times as we did today – that's for sure. We're going to try to work to keep that balance like we did in the first half, and hopefully we'll get a little bit more successful on both sides of the ball."
On preventing negativity in the locker room:
"To be honest with you, you don't really think about that. You just think about your own football team, and what you need to do to improve. We have the type of guys that will do that. I know a lot of people will be down, and rightfully so; anytime you start 0-3, that's as tough as it gets. These guys work extremely hard to put us in a position to win, and we didn't get it done. We'll go back and work hard, and hopefully get on the right track against the [Oakland] Raiders."
On the second half performance:
“Most people have a hard time deciphering when you're going down the field – a lot of it has to do with the coverages you're getting. Do you throw the ball deep; do you throw the ball short? What are they giving you, a running game and passing game? That deep ball, they committed to the short ball, we just had a chance to get a big play, but after that they took some of those plays away. They ran a defense that eliminated those types of plays. You really never know. A defense will try to keep you off-balance, but we just have to execute better and put some more points on the scoreboard – eliminate some of those penalties that kept us out of the end zone."
On if he got a sense that Griffin III was more confident in the second half:
“Anytime you’re better in the third-down area, it will appear that everyone is more confident because you are moving the ball and you have more downs. I think we improved today in the third-down area, but we still didn’t have enough points and not enough production. We will go back and work on that. If you have a chance first-and-10 ten on the 14 and you don’t get any points out of that, then we had another, and we don’t get any points on that one with another turnover… that’s how you lose those games.”
On the injury status of tight ends Jordan Reed and Fred Davis:
“Jordan had a quad contusion and couldn’t go back in the game. Fred, last play of practice on Friday, kind of sprained his ankle, said he was fine and wasn’t sore; woke up on Saturday and it was a little swollen. [He] tried to go this morning and couldn’t go.”
On why he chose to kick a field goal on fourth-and-3 late in the game:
“Well, first of all, you have three now, so if you’re first-and-goal from the three, you want to get the ball in the end zone. If you do get an onside kick, you have a legitimate chance even with two timeouts, and even if you don’t and get the ball with 40 seconds left, and from a pretty good field position, we would have had a field goal with another seven or eight yards. When you’re all of a sudden missing on three downs, and now you’re forced to kick another field goal with a two-score game and you want to be back in the game. You know you have to get the onside kick to have a legitimate chance with the time to score a touchdown.”
On the play of the defense today:
“I thought we played extremely hard. We talked about putting them in a one-dimensional game. We did a much better job of stopping the run. Obviously, I wish we would’ve done a little better on the passing game. We got a nice turnover there. Our guys battled. I thought they did a good job throwing. I was pleased with the effort, but we gave up too many big plays.”
On what he is most surprised about since the end of training camp:
“Well, being 0-3.”
On the injury to linebacker Brandon Jenkins:
“Yeah, his ankle is sore. He couldn’t come back in the game. I can’t tell you how serious it is.”
On safety Bacarri Rambo seeing limited playing time on defense:
“Three corners started the game. We stayed with some of our base defense, but three corners started the game. When you have three corners going in, obviously you’ve got Josh [Wilson] and [David] Amerson in the game. That was our game plan going in and that’s what we stayed with for a majority of the game.”
On if he can remember making a comeback after starting 0-3:
“No, I can’t remember that far back. Hopefully it hasn’t been too many times. I do remember one time when I started 0-and-4. We’ll persevere.”
