PFT: The Redskins could cut the next Andre Johnson

Back in March of 2009, Albert Haynesworth was asked to explain why his agent met with Redskins owner Dan Snyder at the NFL Scouting Combine, which appeared to be a crystal clear case of tampering.The official explanation at the time:...

If he is a bust, he is a bust and he should go but I would hate to see it. If he could get past his injury issues, I thought Kelly was the most NFL ready of the 3 second rounders from that year and the one we needed the most (big, tall Red Zone target with hands like fly paper).

As for this making a mockery of the reason given for the agent/owner meeting . . . well . . . that was a year ago and before the Allen/Shanahan regime got here. I'm not saying it is why the meeting took place but cutting a player picked by the former management team is certainly nothing new and should not be viewed as anything more than that.

Florio is again just speculating rather than reporting.
 
Florio is an idiot. How does a new coach coming in and cutting a player who hasn't lived up to potential and struggled with injury have ANYTHING to do with a discussion Snyder had with an agent 2 years ago?

We are all now dumber for having read that article.
 
Uh... a bit of confusion here. When I went to the article the byline said Greg Rosenthal, not Florio-am I missing something?
 
Florio runs PFT. You can bet it didn't get posted without his OK, regardless of whose name is on the byline.

I wasn't aware Malcolm Kelly was the next Andre Johnson.

If he's as good as Johnson (who is probably the most talented WR in the league next to Larry Fitz) then we definitely have to keep him!

Thank God Florio pointed that out!
 
I hope this is just more PFT nonsense. I'm on record as hating the pick when it was made. However now that we've spent a 2nd on him why not give him the typical three years it often takes a WR to break out before showing him the door? ...unless the really, really think he's not NFL material or that his knees are done. :paranoid:

You guys have such a hatred of PFT. They're pretty good guys, and they're on top of news (and yes, at times, rumors).

And to be clear: PFT wasn't saying that Kelly was the next Andre Johnson, Haynesworth said that the Redskins THOUGHT he might be the next Andre Johnson. And that was last year.

As far as the cutting Kelly is concerned, again, PFT is just relaying that Redskins beat writer (and Washington Times alum) Ryan O'Halloran predicted that the Skins could cut Kelly.

But back on topic, if Kelly's injuries don't clear up, he's not worth having on the team. He's very talented, but hasn't show any consistency or even the ability to stay healthy.
 
So, let me get this straight. PFT picks-up something another reporter suggested as a possibility? And then they suggest that he may be the next AJ? Right.....

As for Kelly's real future with the Skins? I'll leave that up to the coaches to decide. I believe he will get the entire camp to prove himself...or not.

As for missing on Jackson, does anyone think he would have similar stats with Campbell tossing the rock? Now with McNabb in house, maybe Kelly [and the rest of the receiving corps] will show improvement. A rising tide lifts all ships. I read that somewhere????:cheers:
This same scenario has been suggested many times before with many other players. "Just wait till [player X] moves to another team. He'll show the Skins that it was a mistake". I can't remember one such occurrence, but maybe I'm drunk on the Kool-Aid?

You are missing the point - Florio implied that because they're thinking about cutting Kelly, that we obviously tampered with Haynesworth. That's the part that sticks out to me; its completely ridiculous.

Sorry, but they're on top of nothing. They report using information reported by someone else. Others do the work and the research, and publish their information. People at PFT read it, put their own spin on it, and "report" it. That's pretty much what is done here, and other message boards, except we give the actual author the credit, show the original author's work, then give our opinions, and we don't pretend that we're reporting something.

Seriously, I want the guy to succeed as much as any of you. For one reason or another it hasn't worked out. What I don't appreciate is the pleasure which some sports writers (ahem) seem to take when these guys fail or don't live up to billing.

You can debate the wisdom of taking three pass catchers in the 2nd round of one draft (and I did), but saying that we should have KNOWN Jackson was going to be better is a joke. You could play that game with just about any good player or any team.

From one of his scouting reports prior to the draft:

"Malcolm Kelly has the great size that NFL scouts look for in a receiver at 6-4. He also has great speed. That combination will leave scouts salivating. You will also rarely see Kelly drop a ball. He has very steady hands, and you can see many highlights of him in college making one handed or very difficult catches.

Some of the seniors in his class may be better all around players, but no one has his pure athletic ability and body. He reminds some of Calvin Johnson.

Kelly was selected by the Washington Redskins with the 20th pick of the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Like many of the top-rated wide receivers, he fell precipitously on draft day, as not a single wide receiver was picked in the first round. "
 
I thought that was interesting too. You can never completely factor in injuries with any player. Some can come back after being hurt and be as good as before, some can't. You just never know. If you draft them and they never get back you're a fool for taking the risk. If you pass on them and they turn out to be great you were short sighted.
