PFT: Momentum builds for a Redskins name change, and one man can make it happen

It was mentioned in today’s one-liners, but the topic demands an article of its own. The NFL franchise assigned to Washington, D.C., has a name that it both racist and offensive.* Most Americans have become desensitized to that fact.* But it is a fact. And the time has come for the name to change. Last…

Florio is really putting the responsibility of correcting a wrong 60+ (if you believe the name is wrong) years in the making on a kid that just graduated college?

What a cheap shot from a hack excuse of a reporter.

Another farce hitching his Wagon to what he sees as a golden egg page views wise. Disappointing. No input from native Americans as per the norm.

dangit, I really thought Florio was coming on in good form finally when he was taking the league to task for the salary cap debacle, but here he goes down the rabbit hole on the name change theme and throws it all away.

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this site, but definitely (unfortunately) not my first post on this subject.

I find it so incredibly irresponsible of these so called journalists/reporters that they NEVER do their homework. They never take the time to check how the name and logo were selected (for, about, and by Native Americans) and that a vast majority of Native Americans not only don't find the name or logo offensive, but actually like them and don't want them changed.

It is time that we as fans and the informed public start the crusade against how offensive these mediots, who are trying to ignite racial tension, and their message is.

I love your thoughts Taylor! Great to meet you and please make sure you introduce yourself in the gateway! (I selfishly love to meet new folks and learn more about them as individuals)

side note: LOVE seeing more new posters! One that I know just introduced herself, go say hi to Diamonds too!)

Welcome to the site brother

When you get a chance, head over to the Introductions thread and help us get to know you a little bit.

Lets poll the tribes with casinos and tax free land. Let them know that a vote for a name change goes hand in hand with them being stripped of their casinos, coming under our laws instead of tribal laws, and being taxed for their land. See how offended they really are.

Florio is a giant toolbag. The best thing for people to do is to ignore him and his ilk. Just another "pioneer" trying to make a name for himself under the guise of battling racial insensitivity. These tards are in no short supply, as this is a low hanging fruit in their world...

I fully agree. Welcome to the site!!!

A Florio is what i take & flush right after a spicy meal.

Taylor 36 introduces himself to the board with a 95-yard pick-six of a post.

Welcome.

And Hail to your, my, our, Washington REDSKINS!!!!

this has nothing to do with casinos or tax free land, its ignorant to even bring that up. however the reaosn this name chnage gabage always fails is simple, most indians dont dislike having the redskins, we have a classy emblem not like the braves

Off topic post, but I wanted to thank everyone for being so friendly and welcoming. I can already tell that I'm going to like it here!

Most American Indians say that calling Washington’s professional football team the “Redskins”
does not bother them, the University of Pennsylvania’s National Annenberg Election Survey shows. Ninety percent of Indians took that position, while 9 percent said they found the name “offensive.” One percent had no answer. The margin of sampling error for those findings was plus or minus two percentage points.
Because they make up a very small proportion of the total population, the responses of 768 people who said they were Indians or Native Americans were collected over a very long period of polling, from October 7, 2003 through September 20, 2004. They included Indians from every state except Alaska and Hawaii, where the Annenberg survey does not interview.

The question that was put to them was “The professional football team in Washington calls itself the Washington Redskins. As a Native American, do you find that name offensive or doesn’t it
bother you?”

The data from this poll leads me to believe what some others have said... Native Americans have bigger things to be offended about in North America than our beloved football franchise.

I don't buy the whole "If it offends 1 person" theory that a lot of the PC Police types propagate either... There's 1000 things I'll see in the next 24 hrs that may offend a small percentage of the population, hell 900 are in one South Park Episode.

I agree with those of you who think the name should stay. Maybe I'm being insensitive or ignorant, and if that's the case then so be it.

I do have a concern that because of the ties of the NFL to the federal government and the ties of the team to the local governments (PG County MD, Ashburn and Richmond VA), two states (MD & VA), and Washington DC, that one day what we think wont matter. I don't know if that day is sometime this year, next, or 20 years from now, but eventually I think the pressure will be too much - both on the league and the team.

For me it's REALLY simple. I'm all for a name change when the constituency it actually supposedly offends comes forth and makes it clear that they are indeed offended by it. Until that happens instead of the polar opposite as reflected in recent study after study after study, I'll be 100% unwilling to even discuss it with the PC wankers. They can go pound sand.
